Howdy guys. Long time.

We got another issue confronting our joint use of NW la jolla. Peruse the map and the links and make up your own mind.

The spearos are none-too-happy...

My take: The map comes directly from Seaforth's website. We may need to work together again on this as spearos (and I'm sure kayakers) don't want to get clocked by some tourist hotdogging on jetskis. We are out there to enjoy the peace and safety of the NW kelp.

We are asking that they come up to Nautilus street and turn south toward Point Loma and give kayakers and spearos some room as we all will be crowded into that NW corner before too long. So far, no consideration given. Both of our communities involve in activities that are not easy to see from the deck of a 50mph jetski (4-strokes are nearly silent until they are on you). In the hands of tourist renters, we think it's a real problem.

?? people are allowed to drive whatever they want wherever they want. I dont see why you seem to think you have a say in that. Yea, it probably will be a little annoying, but i dont think theres anything you can do.... its not a kayak fishing preserve.

The Spearos will have to be diligent in filing a complaint for any vessel that comes too close to a Dive Flag. Keep your camera handy.
Those Seaforth Rental Boats are rented by unskilled dolts.

-So who is going to wake up early and string 150 Dive Flags across our area. ;)

Does ballistics work on spear guns ? ooops

I thought that these were supposed to be guided tours. If so, hopefully the guides will keep things reasonable. If not, I guess we should all keep our cameras and jig sticks within easy reach.

I was witness to one of these guided tours recently... they seemed pretty respectful IMO. The group went way outside of the kelp in what had to be 25-30 fathoms. That being said, I still don't think its a good idea. I think it should be against the law for companies to rent jet skis period. It may be easier to try and make renting jet skis illegal all together. Guided tour or not, they should be banned unless proper licensing is required. If you can't drive a car there is no way you should be allowed on a jet ski.

from CNN
The laser, mounted on a Navy warship, was able to destroy an outboard motor on a small boat bobbing "more than a mile away," according to Michael Deitchman, director of air warfare and weapons at the Office of Naval Research.

A .50 cal will do the same for billion dollars less, and can hit a craft at speed not just "bobbing"
watch the video and you will laugh. waste of nice boat.

Jet skis can and have been rented for quite some time now up and down the Ca coast. From all the popular rental areas I have seen, and the use of those jet skis, touring LJ kelp, caves/coves, CP has never been the highlight of the rental. Going fast, jumping waves, and acting stupid is usually done within close proximity of the rental, especially since we're talking per hour rentals.

Jet ski tours - IMO, will be a whole nother story. You've got a guide, working for a company who has put their company on the line, paying workmans comp, and I'm sure they were required to put up a healthy insurance policy just incase. The tourist paying $300 for a guide-led tour is not your typical yahoo looking to go crazy on the water. I'm sure there is a point in the tour where the guide will let the rentals cut loose, but I would bet it's not in an area where any harm could come to those around, but also to their customers (see above - required insurance).
