Scientists aiming their gene sequencers at commercial seafood are discovering rampant labeling fraud in supermarket coolers and restaurant tables: cheap fish is often substituted for expensive fillets, and overfished species are passed off as fish whose numbers are plentiful.

A mako shark fillet, above, is often passed off as swordfish, top.

Yellowtail stands in for mahi-mahi. Nile perch is labeled as shark, and tilapia may be the Meryl Streep of seafood, capable of playing almost any role.

agreed........ but i gotta tell you i would be stoked if i got mako instead of swordfish. I think mako is the best tasting fish i have ever eaten hands down.

i think there is also something to be said if you can look the animal in the eye and give thanks to it before you harvest it vs. going to the store and picking up some meat. It is unfortunate tht most people are detatched from the fact that they are responsible for the animals they are eating and the treatment they get right before they die. circle of life stuff you know.

I always roll my eyes when I go by the fish counter in the grocery store and see Red Snapper, Source: California". They all do it.
