Why is fishing with surface irons so addicting? Is it the insane battle with a hard fighting fish on the end of a long rod? Is it the satisfaction of hooking up on a jig that you had to buy 10 other jigs just to find the greatest swimmer? For me it is none of that. For me, it is watching your quarry turn on your jig at the sight of its wild kick, and then the explosion of water hopefully following your anticipation. This is what I live for everyday in the pursuit for the next great adventure on the water.
Now equipped with a GoPro, I am able to share with all of you the thrill of the hunt and the satisfaction of victory. I have been waiting a long time to be able to capture video of these excursions and now I am finally able to show you. It was the camera’s first day out and it’s only going to get better with more time. Now I know what I have been missing out on for the last year. The editing was a chore that’s for sure, but fun. So here you guys go! The greatest surface iron video clip ever.

Just like dry-fly fly fishing. . . Nothing beats the anticipantion and the visual of the fish making its move. . . . except for actually hooking the M'r F'r.

Custom LB 100 cut 6" off the tip. Saltist BG 40H, 30 lb Izor first string. This rod is my light rod and is only meant to throw Tady C, A1 and similar weights. It is definitely not for the faint of heart.:sifone:

Awesome video. The only thing that could make it better
1. Attach a go-pro to the iron to see the strike
2. Get discovery channel (air jaws) guys to do some helicopter aerial shots.

Would the newer hyper speed (7:1:1) of a saltist still be ok to throw the jigs or is that too fast for irons?
Nice fish, very cool video!
I guess there's no shortage of kayak fishing guides in LJ. :)
Good luck Kevin

No, I wouldn't get that if it were me. It is too fast and you are going to have to slow down your cadence which will restrict you from reeling through the strike. There isn't enough torque on the high speed reels to bring up an angry fish.

Great vid. Thanks for sharing. I watched your vid several times and couldn't see what you were seeing. Were there boils that I didn't see or did you spot a group of breezers? I haven't fished near enough this summmer, let alone gotten my surface iron game on. Thanks for the inspiration. My venerable calstar 90J/Newell 338 combo will see some action asap. Mike

About a school of 300 free swimming below the surface. A nice juicy, hungry school.

Epic video!!! That was awesome getting to see the strike from cast to gaff. That's what I hate about most of the kayak fishing vids on youtube. The video cuts in in the middle of the action and you don't get to see the whole story play out. Thanks for the great footage!
