View Full Version : LJ Sunday - Thieves among us!!!!!
-scallywag-
10-04-2011, 07:43 AM
Short story:
Fished from 5am-noon, plenty of bait (all types) around but rusty water and no fish for me.
Landed at La jolla shores with a few other familiar faces around 1pm Sunday afternoon and the beach was a zoo. I went straight to get my truck while the others where still on the beach.
When I drove up to the beach the guys stopped me and said they just saw some girl grab my Hobie peddles and jump into a truck and take off!!
Vehicle Description:
Late 80's (square hood/fenders) Ford F150 Brown/white trim
(also got the lics#)
Perp:
White Male mid-late 20's
shaved head
large tattoos on chest
He had an older GREY Hobie outback with the old style rudder that sticks out the back...and of course "his" nice new 2010 peddles (with the little bungie to keep the padded peddles inplace) .
Long Story:
So I guess when we landed the thief approched one of the other guys (who also had a hobie) and asked if he knew anyone selling the peddles drives. The guys talked for a while, apparently the thief is also a kayak fisherman (errrr!!!). He (the thief) had his truck parked on the sand with his yak in the back, but he also had a girl with him so I'm not sure if he actually was fishing or just casing the place?
Anyway everyone went about their business and I guess a couple minutes later they saw his girl with the peddles quickly walking off the sand and up the street to the truck which was now on the street ready to leave. Thankfully they got the dudes Lic# so hopefully the police can find the guy.
I'm guessing someone knows this guy or has seen him before, he sticks out like a sore thumb and I'm sure he'll be around...keep an eye out for this guy, he did this in the middle of the afternoon, at high tide, with no less than 100 people around and 3 or 4 of them where people I know! At this point he's probably thinking "geeze I sure could use some more rods!!":the_finger:
OHH yeah....once again a big huge THANKS to the guys at HOBIE and FASTLANE SAILING for getting me back on the water. :you_rock:

It makes me noxious to hear this kinda of stuff.
My 2cents: I was in the Navy for many years and when someone whom i lived with in a 80 man berthing compartment stole my scivvies I learned that anything is up for grabs.
I have had rip offs at the launch so I never leave the launch without taking my pedals and rods if I could find a way to take my bait tank I would or just start using my wheels more. Be careful everyone.

Hope you told them it cost more than $480. That makes it a bigger crime grand theft.which makes it a felony .
I have a feeling the kayak they had was stollen as well.
Good luck:confused:

Scally I was hoping you would post something. There are some images of him and his chick at the triangle.
I was the guy who noticed what happened. I spoke with another member who helped me get the photo of the guy. Guess his vehicle never shows up on the cam.
Big Tattoo on his chest. His hobie is an 03 outback it should be pretty easy to spot him if I see him again. Also not to many of those outbacks have the V2 turbo fins. He just lost his LJ privileges. Here's a photo. The other red arrow is where scally had his revo. Also this is a smilar picture of the truck
I hadn't noticed his chick until I saw a girl walking down the street with turbo fins. As soon as I seen her get in that car I took off trying to get the license info. Hope you can get these back.

I think we should bring that back. Massively f-d up. A lot of bad things can happen to a person on the water. Long ways to shore too...
Jer- Stoked you got sorted some new jazzed up fins... Your gonna have some serious line ripping karma coming your way bud.... And ill bring you some coldies...
To the dreg piece of $hit thief-------your being hunted by every fisherman on this board...
To the San Diego guys all the way North to the La crew keep an eye out for this prick
Jeremiahs one of the nicest dudes in this secret mens/womens society.......
And if im not mistaken isnt there a cop on these boards???Attention Cop, its time to use your powers buddy..... step it up
Hobie mirage drive with v2's just under $600......
He's got a plate number, video of perps, and eye witnesses.........
There is definitely a silver lining in this story: the kayaking community at LJ knows you and has your back. Getting the license plate is huge, hope the police take it from here.

I doubt the cops are going to do much....I tried handing them a video of the Dbag who walked into my driveway and proceeded to steal the 600.00 spare tire/rim off the back of my Wrangler, they wouldn't even take the DVD video I made for them. Of course I didn't have a plate # so that may change things a little.
Hope somebody catches this little bitch, I bet he thinks he is slick shit right about now...

Sooner or later, the kayak is bound to pop up on craigslist with the mismatched pedals.
If I recall correctly, the difference between an 03 pedal and the new one is the mechanism used to pop out the retaining pin used for setting leg length.
On the 03 model pedal, you have to pull the pins out of the hole and the mechanism is made of wire, and the newer ones you squeeze the mechanism made out of molded plastic to re-adjust pin setting, is that right?
Just want to know what to watch out for if the thief knows he can't use the boat anymore and puts it up for sale somewhere.

Nail the bastard. With someone getting the license plate, there's no way police shouldn't get him. This can't be tolerated by our law enforcement officers, we have too much valuable equipment at risk.
Hopefully, he's not driving a stolen vehicle, too.
That really sucks.
But it sounds like it's going to be really hard for these guys to get away with their dirty chit.

What's happening w/ this thread, i.e., the heads up, pictures of the perps., their truck and, most importantly, the link to the site where a license plate number can be tracked, represents one of the best things about this kind of site. While there's no lack of competitiveness amongst us, banding together to identify, isolate and catch someone who doesn't "play by the rules" (i.e., rips any of us off) is - well its just very cool. Good work, amigos. Hope it helps bring this low-life to justice!
"VIGILANTE": An individual who intends - or a member of a volunteer committee organized - to suppress and summarily punish criminals (as when the processes of law are viewed as inadequate); broadly: self-appointed doer(s) of justice.

Here is a gray outback for sale on Craigslist put up around noon today.
http://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/boa/2632349903.html
Listing says it's 4 years old, but based on the round front hatch in the photo, it is not... It should be older than 4 years old to have the round front hatch.
I asked for a photo and will see if he sends one, will update if he does send the picture of boat and drive. Or someone in the north county (Carlsbad) can go and see if a viewing can be arranged.

Damn, Jeremiah, that sucks!
Is there any lower form of life on the planet? Not only being a thief, but talking your chic into swiping stuff for you? F'n thieves! :the_finger:
Is it just me, or does this kind of crap always happen to the nice guy? This might be the, one, time and place, where my natural scowl comes in handy.
I was parked just to the left of the web-cam image. Right next to the suspected criminals. I saw them, too. It's not like two people sitting by a kayak draws that much attention, though. My kayak was there, just out of camera view---with two Mirage Drives on board!
The ballsy display in the middle of the day is what's the most impressive: A packed beach, with other kayak anglers, going about there business loading and unloading. Thanks to guys like, Dominic, for watching his brothers back!
That's one fine way to break into a code group if you asked me. :luxhello:
Personally, having the information that's been presented, I probably would have kept it quiet. Then again, I would have wanted to warn other kayak anglers as well. So, good on Jeremiah for putting up a public warning. :cheers1:
I just know, that being the complete idiot this guy obviously is, he would come back to fish La Jolla. If he is indeed a fishermen, the luhr is just too great! Maybe after a couple of "Fresh To Death" reports---and I would most assuredly hit a home run with my Halibut-bat, take back my pedals, open his front hatch, flop his lifeless body in the Southbound current and keep fishing without missing a beat. If the thief is reading this, you better choose your victims wisely. I can assure you, street justice is alive and well!

Didn't you see that truck with a screaming kicking kid being thrown inside.... That truck would be found really quick!
For real though.... Wouldn't a local news team do a little investigating for you? Especially if you include all the theft in the last few months / weeks...
I still propose we all mark our stuff, that way it is that much easier to identify!
Did you post this on bloodydecks? Them and all the fishing sites, someone knows this kid! He will get what is coming! you just need to blow it up all over the internet and facebook and eventually this piece of work will get what is coming!

For real though, I think the local news idea isn't a bad idea.
I'm curious to know if he knows he being sought after.
So, the mirage drive must have been removed prior to landing right? I leave mine in and drag the kayak up the beach with it attached. Its pretty hard to get it off that way till the rods have been removed (or stolen) off of it.
Tom- thats what he does too...
Sorry to hear of that Jeremiah...

Wow, 45 posts in seven hours. I guess the slow fishing has not sapped all the energy from our community.
From what I have read, enough evidence has been gathered to find these thieves. I am sure that the cops are busy and this will be way down the priority list. On the other hand, if we want to, some of us can do the legwork for them and hand them the perps with everything they need to bust this guy, (and his lady). We have photos, a license plate and a motivated group of volunteers. Some of us need to do the legwork and then hand the bad guys over to the authorities.
I live a ways away but if a posse is being formed, just send up the Bat-Signal. I will be there.

Have a chain and lock on the ready... When you see the truck lock the wheel and call the cops! He wont be able to drive off at least! And you won't have to deal with the guy. Also make sure the info is on craigslist. Anyone looking to buy a yak will find that info first and call you if they come across this idiot! Maybe he fishes lakes so send some pay to play lakes and give them the info.

Damn. I was there Sunday. I recall the "thief" launched early around 6 when I did, unloaded from a truck onto the beach.
When I landed he was sitting on the triangle next to the grey hobie. Seemed odd at the time, since he was there when I landed and even after I was wheeling my Hobie to my SUV. I was wondering why he had not moved off the beach. He talked a while to a yakker (bearded, young, nice guy) who had landed right next to me, also in a hobie. I could identify the "thief" if it helps--but the tats and shaved head pretty much close the deal.
Wheelez is the way to go. Just wish Hobie had put a 10 inch hatch in the rear to store the Wheelez.

I agree these are very great points of consequences that normal intelligent people might consider, but normal intelligent people, and even normal non-intelligent people are not the ones stealing mirage drives...
this guys probably a tweaker, he does not feel these "lumps to the head" like normal people...he has no money, so you and I will most likely foot his "hello to lawyer bill", as well as pay for his county jail time, and his unemployment, and his "recovery/ rehabilitation stay at the nearest place" since he will plea bargain it down to a drug related offense, and his future social security benefits he will collect, etc... he could care less about being in jail, it is more comfortable than where he probably lives, and he obviously has a good handle on the system. And if he owned a gun he would have sold it and would not be stealing cheap mirage drives when there are things worth much more money at hand. He is too stupid or short sighted to see these things or even notice a web camera, or witnesses at an extremely popular beach spot. That is why he did it in the first place he cannot think things through properly.
So lets help him see things clearly with a little knock upside the head!
Would probably do more to get his attention than any of the other things!:cheers1:

I'm guessing he wanted the Mirage drive for his own grey hobie, since I am certain he was paddling not peddling when we launched that morning and when I saw him later on the water.
Would not be surprised if he had stolen that grey hobie as well!! Possibly a previous owner had taken the mirage drive in hand to a street-parked car/truck, while leaving the grey hobie on the beach--ripe for a fast load n' road! So then our thief needed a mirage drive to complete his illegal set-up!

I'm meeting with a detective tomorrow to hand over all the info WE"VE collected....also included the reciept for the replacement pedals showing that they are indeed worth over $500.

Good luck getting your stuff back. Hopefully the detective will move quickly in arresting this worthless scum bag. I'll keep an eye open for the truck in OC.

Scally, if you have homeowner's or renter's insurance, you should submit a claim. This kind of loss is usually covered by those policies.

Only valuable personal property MIGHT cover it. 99% of the time, renters insurance will only cover theft if you are WITHIN arms length of the item that was stolen, leaving it in the open, unattended or unsecured will usually be in the clause.
For example, if my kayak gets stolen off the roof of my car, it will be covered if it was locked down, however if it wasn't, it wont be covered.

Typical deductible on a homeowner's/renter's policy is at least $500. Don't burn your claim unless it is a whopper. Now maybe if your garage got burglarized and you lost your $3k golf clubs, your PA and your REVO plus all of your rods/reels, tools and your ABBA vinyl collection....then I say go ahead and make that claim.
Sorry to hear about that sh*t Scally.

Take out a no-deductable Valuable Personal Property Insurance policy. I have all my camera equipment, my kayak, art work and stuff on it. About 25k worth of coverage for $161/year

Thanks everyone!!
Just do me a favor and if you see this guy, let the the police do their job (). I'm pissed too, but don't put your life, liberty or family at risk by doing something illegal...as fun and justified as it may sound, it's not worth it!

It appears this post, this site and mainly its members applied enough pressure in the right direction to start a chain of events that ended this afternoon with an apology and the return of my peddles.
I don't really know what else to say except that its much easier to make mistakes, than to come out and take responsibility for them.
Don't forget to focus your anger in the right direction and email your thoughts to the D'bags on the DFG commission http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwevb/showthread.php?t=11695

Appreciate diverting attention to larger issues, and don't need to know the who/what/when of the evident "fessing up". Would, however, welcome clarification, i.e., did the culprit him/herself come forward in contrition and, if so, did this site/blog alone cause the pressure that brought him/her forward, or was a chat with John Law also influencial?
IMHO, if the person who took your drive had enough integrity to come forward and apologize to you directly, that is quite admirable, as is your effort to tamp down the flames and get on with things. While seemingly rare, "happy endings" of this sort are truly worth celebrating.

Glad yo got your property back. But...
Apology? Mistake? A 10-year old might make a mistake by stealing, and later admirably "man up" with an admission and apology--and learn never to do that again. But an adult? Unless he was stealing to feed his family...Go to the cops.

There's an old joke they used to tell when I was a kid:
A guy offers a women he just met 20 grand to sleep with him and she readily agrees, then he offers her 1 dollar and she get's offended saying something like "What do you think I am?" The guy responds "We've already determined exactly what you are, now we're just haggling over price.
In this case the guy has already shown what he is, he's just come forward to haggle over price. By that I mean that now that he was essentually busted, he's just trying mitigate what his actions will cost him by returning the drive. It's completely based in self interest, he's not doing it out of the goodness of his heart.
If I was Scallywag I'd be happy to get my drive back and might even forgive the guy, and it's certainly in his rights to do so, but that doesn't change this guys nature, or make him any less what he is.
Obviously he's a lowlife, a thug, a thief. In fact he's such a lowlife he staked out the launch till he found a easy drive to steal, then talked his girl into doing the dirty work for him ,which suggests he's a user and a coward as well. I'd add that his girlfriend is either incredibly stupid or just as bad as he is. It's not like she was stealing groceries to feed her kids, she had to know the drive was not his. It may be easier to forgive, but don't expect them to change, forget who they really are, or what they are really about.
It's just like these lowlifes who break into, or vandalize vehicles at launch sites. It may be easier to let it slide on the legal side, but you should never forget who these people really are, what they are capable of, that ultimately they are just thugs and that they are never to be trusted.

Glad you got your drive back, Scallywag. But...
Anybody ever watch "World's Dumbest Criminals"? The situations can be interesting and funny, but I could do without the "so-called celebrities" comments. Anyhow, every once in a while they show a thief who robbed a store, come back and try to return what he stole. The cops end up busting him just the same, hence, he's a dumb criminal for even returning the s#*t.
I agree with Jim, this guy AND gal are not kids who need to learn a lesson, they should clearly know right from wrong, and they deserve the punishment that the law provides.
Maybe next time they won't be identified by camera, and a few hundred kayak fishermen, who are on the look out for them. Without, this website, the webcam images, and all the feedback given, I don't think there is a chance in the world Scallywag gets his drive back. It's through everybody's contribution, he got them back at all, IMHO.

I tend to agree with Jim's assessment, but wouldn't be happy just to get my stuff back. Not that I am vengeful, but that I'd like to keep the guy from doing the same thing to someone else on this board. At least for a few months.
The perp probably got his girlfriend to do the dirty work because he has 2 strikes already, which tells me he's not changeable. He doesn't feel remorse or guilt, but he obviously knows the system and is trying to bargain.
