Ok so I am itching to fish while on travel in Australia...walking down the pier in Adelaide and saw this guy...

Not caught on the Yak....just on camera but he was about 5-6 ft across.
Did talk to some of the guys on the pier to see what they were catching. They said Snook. Long skinny things with sharp teeth...

They said good eating.
Also have to plug the Aussie kayak fishing site...I did see a few guys on the water picking up small fish.

We should set up a partnership with them and devise a "foreign yak fisherman exchange program" so we can fish anytime we travel. :D
It would blow your mind at how big the hobie's are over there..... They freakin love there hobies.....

The fish looks like an Aussie version of Barracuda.

Bingo.
It's a Barracuda - Sphyraenus.
Technically a Australian Barracuda Sphyraena Novaehollandiae.
Ours is the Pacific Barracuda Sphyraena Argentea.
From what I have read they are pretty much the same fish just classed different do to different populations, mainly do to distance and isolation. They eat the same to, edible, Good smoked, not the best..... :D
Recently I read their Kingies are much closer genetically related to our Yellowtail then was previously believed, even though for some reason they get much larger. Could be it's actually the same barracuda and just has not been studied enough to change the species.
"Snook" and "Pike" are just local common names for them. Kind of like us calling ours "Barries", "Slimers" or "Slime Sticks".

Sorry the weather has turned to shite for you. As usual, should have been here last week.
And there are plenty of better local beers around than VB and New.
We get a lot of Pike in the harbour. We call them smelly pike, smaller and great bait, either stripped or live...

Ours would make great bait if it was legal. Blacks love the smaller ones.

Fat Yak is the best of the Aussie beers I had while here.... Most the rest are Yellow Fizzies...
Long live Stone.
