PFD Question

Hey guys,

I cannot decied which PFD I think is going to work best for me, I do not have enough time on the water to have a good opinion. The only ones I have tried were bacis ski vests and they were super uncomfortable and in the way.

I have been looking at the high backed hobie style fishing vest... I know one of the most commmon things to lose is tools, and I think having eveything connnected inside those pockets might be nice. However this is a pretty big bulky vest.

I also see the deflated vest, and the co2 powered belt which are completly out of the way...

What is your guys opinions after having actual experience with these PFDS...

The vest above is the one I currently have.

You want something that will not restrict around your neck. I recommend going to OEX and trying some on. For sure do not get the auto inflate type. You will get wet and you don't want your vest inflating if it does not need to.

I am in the market for another PFD myself, thanks for the info, I have alot of time on the water and still don't know what I want so don't feel bad...lol:reel:

Any vest works fine as long as you don't wear it.as far as I know you just have to have it on your kayak. I usually strap mine to the far end of my yak.:cheers1:

I hope that your being sarcastic. To not wear a PFD is not very smart. God forbid you take on water 3 miles out, having a PFD strapped to the yak wont keep your yak afloat.

ditto....only ones I have tried are some cheap (relataively) I bought online with only adjustable straps and then one that came with the yak I bought, it is a smaller, zippered type, but size is only medium, it fits okay, but I think it is should be a bit longer. It is comfortable however and does not restrict movement.

Don't be a cheap son of b*tch when it comes to safety items:D. Head over to OEX and get something that has a proper fit. I bought the NRS Chinook from OEX, it has more pockets than I need, fits well and helps keep me safe.

the key is to get a kayak or kayak fishing specific model...
these have a very flat almost non existent lower back portion...
that's what makes them comfy in the kayak seat...
a ski vest or the like will not be comfortable in a kayak seat!
if it aint comfy...you aint gonna wear it!
to me, not wearing it would be like riding motocross without a helmet...
it's just part of the sport!

Coast Guard searches for missing kayaker near Malibu

LOS ANGELES-The U.S. Coast Guard and Baywatch Malibu are searching for a missing kayaker near Malibu, Calif., Dec. 29, 2011.
The missing man was reportedly assisting another kayaker when he vanished from sight approximately 1.5 miles east of Point Dume, Malibu.
Baywatch units reportedly found an empty kayak containing a life jacket and a paddle in the search area.
The Coast Guard received the initial call from Baywatch at around 3 p.m.
Shortly after notification, a rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Los Angeles was dispatched to the area to aid in the search.
