View Full Version : 2012 Islander Mothership Schedule
Here we go! If you've done these trips before, you don't need any convincing. If you've never done one, you owe it to yourself to get on one of these trips, they are unlike any other kayak fishing experience. As always, live bait, food and sodas are included in the price. Beers and tips are additional. We did have a $15 price increase on the 1.5 days this year. Sorry guys, they've held it off the last three years for us, but finally had to bite the bullet. Price on the 2.5 day remains the same though.
1.5 day trip
May 18-20 Fri-Sun
$310 per person
2.5 day trip
May 31- June 3 Thurs-Sun
June 21-24 Thur-Sun
$495 per person
And we have had some changes to our booking process, so take note of the following:
When you call to register your spot, we will take a $25 non-refundable deposit. The only exceptions to this refund are if the trip does not run (due to weather, or lack of sign ups, or what have you) A week or so prior to the trip, we will contact you for the remaining balance. Once the remaining balance is paid, that is also non-refundable. If you'd like to pay more than the $25 deposit, that's up to you, but it will also be non-refundable in the event something comes up that keeps you from doing the trip.
Sorry to get so official about it, but we don't make any money on these trips and we've had a lot of cancellations and transfers and what not- that cost us money every time we run a credit card, so this helps us out on our end, and may help a trip run if a couple bucks from cancellations is the difference between running and canceling a trip. As always, we'll do everything we can to fill your spot if you do need to cancel, so that we can refund your deposit, but that is no guarantee.
I've got the fire extinguisher next to the phone, light it up and get your name in quick! We're doing less trips this year, to ensure they'll run, but they could fill up quick!

I always say...
it is ALWAYS better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission!!!
my wife buys a new calendar usually in November or December...

All we ask is that if you're already on the original 2.5 day, please don't switch to this one if at all possible. We don't want to end up with two half-booked trips that don't run. Thanks guys.

When I need to use an anchor, let's say during a tourney, so I

Things I learned from the 1.5 Islander trip,
you really don't need snackage...you will be too busy fishing and paddling
but a few snacks are good in case, they feed you well...
check and double check tackle, you don't want too much, but you don't wanna get caught without enough... you will probably
be rigging and unrigging the yak a few times a day...including stowing the yak for the long moves...
I ran out of battery power at approx 3pm on both batteries, you will need a charger AND an extra set of batteries, remember, you normally do not fish 12 hrs per day, you will on this trip...
I suggest an extra Go Pro battery for those who are bringing one...
When the WSB turn on and when the big butts come to play, and you get your limit, how big is the cooler you are going to have waiting for you when you get back? we opted out of having the crew clean the fish for photo ops when we got back in...scales at the landing
Have enough zip lock and or vacuum pack bags ready when you get home.
They sell ice upon your return for the big coolers you will need to bring your fish home.
Weather permitting, waders yes, but shorts and sunscreen for the afternoon
bite, and maybe a splash jacket on board the yak for when the sun goes down, we were in the water until 8:30 pm
Ful-rac brought an IPad which was nice to view GP footage after dinner...
The Islander has a soda fountain so bring stuff for cocktails...they have an ice machine too, for said cocktails...
I brought a tupperware box for equipment and extra tackle, it get a little crowded on deck with everyones seats pfds and drives, after the initial launch so it's nice to have your own little box or container...
I think that's about all I can think of now, hope this helps, get ready...you are going to have a blast...good luck out there guys...b

All of those are good suggestions for the 1.5 and the 2.5 trip. If I remember correctly each stateroom has 110v outlets so you can charge your batteries while you sleep. Make it super easy on yourself and the crew by bringing a tote to carry your gear, the last thing you want to do is start handing over a small tote, a box, two tackle boxes and three backpacks.
Just like Brett said, limit the amount of stuff you're carrying on the yak while fishing, the deckhands have to hull the yaks over some railing on the stern in order get you launched and out of the water, the more crap you have on board the heavier the kayak is for these guys. Bring a light jacket or hoodie for the night, if you're an insomniac like me you'll probably do some fishing at night from the boat.
Most importantly don't forget that the deckhands work for tips.

Last year I arrived around 430pm and I'm glad I did, parking starts to fill up fast and you find yourself rushing if you get there later in the day, I think I was the 3rd or 4th one there. I was able to offload without feeling rushed, check and re-checked my gear, went through my bags to make sure I didn't forget the Tums, grabbed a bite to eat, chilled at the docks for a while and was good to ready when they started loading.

Heads up:
We had issues with our power outlet in our stater room. So if you plan on charging your gear make sure you check the outlet to see if it's working. I had to fiddle around with the prongs on my plugs to make sure it makes contact with the electrical contacts inside the receptacle. I used a charger with a charging-indicator light to test the outlet or just touch the charger for warmth.
Hope this helps.

there's good news and bad news
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=46086
Conditions at 46086 as of
(9:50 pm PDT on 06/20/2012)
0450 GMT on 06/21/2012:
Wind Direction (WDIR): WNW ( 300 deg true )
Wind Speed (WSPD): 11.7 kts
Wind Gust (GST): 17.5 kts
Wave Height (WVHT): 5.2 ft
Dominant Wave Period (DPD): 12 sec
Average Period (APD): 6.4 sec
that looks pretty bad. 12-18kt winds, 5 ft swells at 12 seconds. that's gonna be a bumpy ride. but...
water temp is 64.
further offshore...
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=46047
Wind Speed (WSPD): 17.5 kts
Wind Gust (GST): 21.4 kts
Wave Height (WVHT): 6.6 ft
Dominant Wave Period (DPD): 11 sec
Average Period (APD): 6.1 sec
18-20kt winds with 6-7ft swells at 11 seconds. yeah, that's not gonna be fun. been out in worse at catapalooza, but that's probably coming in to the island. and just getting on and off the boat will be a thrill ride. unless he can get out of it on the lee side or inside pyramid cove.
there's some great fishing on the front side, and I would think that we'd be pretty protected in tight to the front side.
either way, shane and john are top notch and will have a great game plan. see y'all tomorrow afternoon.

As always weather.com is never accurate for what we do.
Thanks to the Islander captain and crew. I would recommend this boat to anyone for fishing, diving, sharking and any other need to be on the water. This is a full service operation and is top shelf. If I need to go long range I will sign up with these guys for sure. Although the weather was not ideal. We found some yellowtail (up to 25lb) and halibut (up to 35lb). San Clemente is a great place to fish from a Kayak.
CJ - Thanks for putting this together and I am definitely going next year.

I second that BentRod:luxhello: The Islander trip was hands down the best offshore fishing trip I have ever been on. The crew was super professional and always willing to lend a helping hand. The food was phenomenal and always available whether we wanted to eat on the ship or eat lunch on the go. The captain was not only super knowledgeable, but was very personable and always out with the crew helping out on deck as well. He also made me feel more comfortable on board then any other captain I have rode with answering any questions or concerns you may have. I feel the best part was the community everyone had on board and respect everyone had for each other. This was my first year and everyone made me feel welcome from the get go. Lastly CJ you are not only the man for setting this up, but I greatly appreciate all the help along the way on the trip, always there to help as well. Hands down best trip ever for me, I will surely be back next year! Thank you Islander!!!!
