Sun Protection is a Must

I just got back from having 2 Skin Cancers removed from the back of my ear, what I thought was only 1 actually turned out to be 2. Trust me this is no fun to have done. Here’s a rundown of what they did.
I had to get 6 needle shots behind my ear to numb the area
Then they taped my ear to the side of my head while this was setting in
Once numb they Sliced the two areas from my head.
They sent those to the Pathologist to have them analyzed to see if it had all been removed.
Then they got out the Cauterizing too and used that to close the wound and then stitched it up.
I had to wait about 15 minutes for the report from the Pathologist.
Doctor walks in and says, “We didn’t get it all we have to go deeper the cancer tissue is more inward that outward.” There isn’t much area on the ear for that to happen.
The process above minus the shots was done all again. This time I have a hole that goes through my ear that was stitched up. 15 minutes later the Pathologist gives us the thumbs up that it has all be removed. Thank God, I didn’t have much ear left for them to work on.
I know that we are all tough and think nothing can happen to me, I don’t need a hat, sunscreen, or whatever. We preach about safety on the water so that we all can fish another day, well if you’re dead from skin cancer the only thing we’ll be doing is decomposing and not fishing. I for one want to fish and note decompose. Wear a good had, buff, sun clothing, or whatever keeps you protected. If you have any sores on you that just will not heal, it’s probably skin cancer, go have it taken care of. If you are fare skinned like me you should be checked every 6 months, or at least once a year. I hope this helps someone protect themselves and hopefully add more years to your life.

Sun Protection FTW!!! I too, rather be fishing than decomposing. :p

I always wear my hat but need to practice using sun block. :( It's too bad I can't put that stuff on my face, it'll cause all kinds of acne inflammation.

I use the baby sunscreens because they are designed for skin health and protection. They don't cause acne and are very protective and gentle. The other ones I like are Blue Lizard, Aloe Gator, and other Aloe based sunscreens.

I was thinking of having them put a fish eye there, but thought that would look too strange.

Crazy thing is that it took about 3 hours for the wounds to completely stop bleeding. I literally had to stop moving my head completely for a while to stop moving the stitches and stuff. Now the bleeding is stopped but the pain is there. I wish my FF would have arrived today it would have given me something to do tomorrow. Oh well I figure something out.

That's some scary sh*t.....cancer of ANY kind is no joke.

I lost my grandmother to it, one of my uncle's is currently suffering from it, my sister was diagnosed with it in her early 20's, my mother in law passed from it not to long ago, one of our employees just got diagnosed with it, an ex-coworker is going through chemo at the moment.......it's everywhere and its not going away.

glad everything is getting better for you and thanks for reminding us to cover up

good luck with the healing process. Good heads up to everyone. You had the Mohs procedure done and each time the borders aren't clear of cancer they take away more tissue until the cancer is cleared. Those basal cell carcinoma are locally destructive (grow wide and deep) and thankfully don't metastasize....be thankful you still have an ear and an ear without a major deformity. I have had patients with prosthetic noses in the past. Well one, the other guy couldn't afford the prosthesis. Again, good luck.

That was my fear when they came back saying they had to go deeper on the tissue, I was like um there isn't much meat there to take from, thus why I have a hole in my ear now. They got it all and I'm glad.
