I dont' want to buy a fish finder with a GPS combo. I'm looking into a market for a handheld GPS so when I go fishing, hunting, hiking, running, or bring it overseas.

I don't know where to start. Looking on youtube saw

Garmin GPSMAP 78sc Handheld GPS

was going to get Garmin with a combo of two way radio. But out all friends i'll be the only one with that radio.

Or I was going to by a iPod touch and download the outdoor app.

For hunting the two most used GPS units I've seen are the Oregon and the 62, with the 62 being more popular according to the hunting boards I frequent. If fishing is your primary use, the 78sc looks like a pretty cool unit, then you can get the topo map chip for hunting.

Myself, I have the Oregon 400t and love it. I'm going to get the Bluechart chip for it eventually.

I use the Garmin 76Cx. West Marine usually has it on sale for $149. Its waterproof and floats. I have blue water charts, topos and traffic maps for it so it can do everything you are looking to do.
The newer models like the 78 do things somewhat better but at 3x the price.

The Ipod will only work if your in WiFi range. I use a magellan handheld GPS works great.

I'm in the same boat (no pun intended) as you! I was looking at the Standard Horizon HX851. I need a radio, and it has GPS. Not sure if it has good reviews though...

2010 model looks awesome.

Researching it. It has nothing but good reviews. Reading old post here a lot of salt dogs recommend it.

Another thing to look at if the unit can be connected to a computer. It will make it easier to input coordinates of local reefs / artifical reefs.
