View Full Version : Birds of a feather...

THE DARKHORSE

Despite the rumor mill of revamped posts from yesteryear it's been business as usual. Nothing's changed; the same guys who catch fish are catching fish. The internet is chock-full of chatter and banter; from professionals of exactly that. Chatter and banter. It's like watching a flock of a thousand Cormorants---while I keep catching fish. You know, that social bird? The ones mysteriously staring you down until they see another Cormorant. Yeah, that one. They're in a constant state of finding new friends to fly with. And in doing so, the fishing itself sits idle on the back burner. Why go fishing if you can talk about it, right? I mean who are we kidding, there's just too many Cormorants to meet up with. They might all look the same to you, but apparently each of these birds is unique and has something to offer---to other Cormorants.

Which is great if you're a Pelican. A pelican, as annoying and determined as they might be, are always focused on finding the fish. They're all business! They pay attention to the Dolphins, kayak anglers, sport-boats and Cormorants, but don't just dive down on every opportunity. Oh they'll dive down, mind you. They'll slam your Sardine without hesitation. Even if it means getting hooked. Then they'll slam your Sardine again. Which is an admirable quality in and of itself. That's a supremely focused bird if you asked me. With the pace of software gadgetry I have no doubt birds will one day be sporting the latest and greatest, new best thing, too. Each year these gadgets are smaller, faster and take less brain cells to operate. Soon every Cormorant on the Coast will be able to locate other social circles without even having to fly. Only bound by the second tier priority of actually finding fish. That said, regardless of software updates I find it highly unlikely the Pelicans would give a $h!t. After all, there's just too many fish to catch!

You might be asking yourself: What in the hell do said birds have to do with me? And that my friend is a question only, you, can answer. I realize each and every one of us are wired differently; and for that matter, it takes all types to make the world go round. Regardless of the fact that you fit in with the Cormorants or Pelicans, you still have a place in this world. You're special in your own way. I'm of the opinion, though, that If everyone had Williams syndrome this world would be a better place. Until then, I'll just have to make do with what I've got.

Despite what the fishing reports of 2006 have to say: It's not wide-open; and everyone isn't catching White Sea Bass. Or, Yellowtail for that matter. It's the same ebb and flow of the Sea---year after year. Conditions are in a constant state of flux, mind you. The moon comes and goes. The tides change accordingly. The same guys who catch fish, keep catching fish. The internet chatter/banter is going full speed and will continue to do so. Regardless of what's actually happening, of course. Which depending on how you look at it, is, a good thing. If you decide to live your life vicariously through the internet, more power to 'ya!

...that sleek Hobie Revo makes you look thinner. Much more so than the portly pro angler... or it might be that you are in the background of a fat fish.

I'm not sure, it could be a combination of all of it.

Definitely had to read that post a few times to make total sense of it, but as I read through it a few times it begins to make sense. You can certainly see cliques within the circle. While I don't know everybody who posts on here and fishes out there, I have had the pleasure of meeting a solid group in the short time I've lived her.

For the most part, I've met great people willing to help. Others, with an attitude leaning toward "Figure it out yourself" or people with hear/say all the time

It's all a matter of what type of bird you want to surround yourself by.

The rumor mill has got me going on the water a lot more than normal this weekend, but not because of the hype associated with it. I've been around long enough to know the internet is 90% bs. So what if there were 15 YT on Tuesday, doesn't mean there are 15 YT today or tomorrow. But, I at least got out to find out for myself. I find that I'm a pelican at heart, but it takes time being a cormorant too. If that makes sense?

When I started surfing, I paddled into the biggest group I could find and talked to every surfer I could meet. How do I do this, how do I do that. Meanwhile I'm too busy chatting and reading and figuring out which board is better than that other, that I missed all the waves. After my time as a cormorant were finished, or the phase passed, I became a pelican of surfing. On the water everyday, paddling into any wave that scared me. One day I became a surfer. 15 years later, I'm a cormorant again. But not in my own eyes, but in the eyes of other cormorant. They view me as a social bird, someone they can come up to, ask a few pointers, stuff that like. So I play the role of a cormorant, but am a pelican at heart when it comes to my surfing.

That's a lot to digest =)

Nice fish :wsb:

Not everyone can be a proffessional guide, and while I sit at my boring job from 5am to 4pm...yes, I will be living vicariously through fine chaps such as yourself on this world wide interspace. While im at it I'll banter. And joke. And gosip like a school girl. And stay light hearted because I don't have a huge stick up my ass.
On the same note, as I leave my job when the bell rings this fine 4/20 I'll be packing up, hitting the road, and doing what it is we do, because this shit is in my bones.

My wife like birds, and feels really sorry for them when they fly into our sliding glass patio door. I tell her that if she really really felt sorry for them, she would move the bird feeder to outside our house :D I'm sure there is an analogy in there, something about not being able to catch fish from behind Windows or PC's or something like that....

I reread this report umpteen times as I often do when something irks me. I shouldn't be so quick to be defensive. I obviously identify with the the comparisons mentioned do to the fact that I actively participate in the meaningless banter that takes place in these forums. I like to joke, tells stories, lie about fish, basically interact with my kinda people instead of deal with my dumbf:)ck coworkers 60 hrs a week. Then come home and cook and care for a 19month old little girl. So bwe is my only consolation to make me feel closer to the water. If thats not what this site is for then maybe im in the wrong site. I guess your supposed to catch fish, report it and thats it....no wait, that cant be right. Catch fish, dont report it, hold onto the info till the secrets out, then post....this is getting confusing. Ill be at lj tomorrow. if youre a pelican and not to high and mighty to wave at a fucking cormorant, ill be on a green xfactor with a trolling motor doing burnouts in the kelpbeds scaring all the fish away.

Was this even a fish report? I caught a fish but I won't say when, where, or how. Josh, thats a hell of a nice fish and good advice about not following the crouds, but maybe doesn't belong in the "fishing report" section. I enjoyed your bird metaphore and found it though provoking. I'm thinking of a blue heron for myself. Maybe we need a "philosophical waxings" area on BWE. Mike

You on the other hand are doing a great job as lobbyist. Next time you should use powerpoint for your presentation. And colorful pie charts.

Are we "fishing enemies" now? Are there any related colors I should steer clear of when clothes shopping and do I need to "watch my back" on the water?

A few months ago I was being harassed by a cormorant, it kept going for my Mac. It would'nt leave me alone. I looked at it a little closer and noticed its beak was wrapped tightly shut with black electrical tape. Funny, this thread made me think about this day. I suppose one fisherman got sick of this guy stealing their bait and taped it shut. But after reading this thread, I started to think that maybe the real reason was that someone was trying to silence it. Could it have been a Pelican with a roll of tape? I lured it closer with my mac and with one skillful swoop of my hand, caught the poor cormorant and freed him from his impending doom. Afterall, all birds have the right to catch fish even if they are not as good at it as others.

It's the same ebb and flow of the Sea---year after year. Conditions are in a constant state of flux, mind you. The moon comes and goes. The tides change accordingly. The same guys who catch fish, keep catching fish.Bennyblanco, you might want to contribute at least 1 fishing report before you jump on a soap box and criticize someone else’s. You have 79 posts? You started 3 threads? And not one is "fish report".

But fair warning, as much as some criticize the style in which information is shared, "not much of a fish report" etc. etc. and wants to be hand fed information.
There is a whole other genre of flaming fish reports, I don't see it here... yet?
But having experienced it first hand I can tell you some out there want NOTHING shared EVER!

Guess it's true you can't please all the people all the time. But Josh knows that, and he contributed anyway. The same cannot be said for many who have posted on this report.

As the great comedian Steven Wright, he once said:

There’s a fine line between fishing and just sitting behind the keyboard like an idiot.

All this time I thought I was surrounded by Pelicans! :D

In response to some of the feedback, apparently, my original intent of the post was lost in translation. I thought the analogy was funny; and still do. After all, it's just a silly post meant to either inspire you to get off your a$$---or simply improve the flavor of your morning coffee. I'll be clear when I say you don't have to do, either. You don't have to drink coffee. And I'm not going to force anyone to go fishing. How you choose to live your life is ultimately up to you. Obviously.

Honestly, after reading it a few times now, I can't imagine anyone being offended by the post. Unless, of course, that person spends an incredible amount of time on the computer? In addition to that, my post had absolutely nothing to do with fishing skills---or lack there of, mind you. It certainly had nothing to do with having an opportunity to fish more often than others.

William, if it's not obvious by now, when I wrote Williams Syndrome it has nothing to do with a guy named William, specifically. Look it up!

Is it a fishing report? Now, if you can't find the value in the contents of this post, I really don't know what to say. Nor will I try. A picture of a giant, White Sea Bass, in clean-green water, with obvious line-up markers in the background 'ta boot? It's the end of April, folks! Without going into too much detail, the same exact thing, happens every year at this time.

I'm pretty sure a few guys got the message and managed to read between the lines---capitalizing on the "fish report"---with a trophy-fish of their own!

Well done Josh
So your saying you can't catch fish from behind a keyboard?
No wonder there are so many people upset...

Josh your post did have a affect on me. And I did get off my a** and went out fishing this past Tuesday and got skunked but did manage to locate macs for bait which was a first for me. I had fun just getting out there and getting time on the water.
Thanks for the motivation I needed.

hey josh always love those fish reports. always very colorful and insightful. and of course i know that there will be a beautiful fish or two at the end. sometimes with some very hot girls to go along.....:D

WOW....cant believe u got so much flack for this one....not a report?...jesus, that fish was not even 24hrs dead when u posted it, I can see the line-up clearly in the background (gps#'s), I see a sabiki and a bait stick (also a jigstick without a jig:rolleyes:) on your boat so its safe to assume it was caught on finbait and the lighting says it was near sundown. What else do you want in a report? hook size? line test? underware color?

If ya'll weren't such a flock of squaking f'n keyboard cormorants, u could have went out the next day, or the day after that or the next day exc..., made a few macks, trolled them near the kelp and had an excellent shot at a fish

At some point it becomes so much easier to just be a dick, than to share info with flock of ungrateful squakers. :the_finger:

PS. I'm diggin that bellcon bendo shot....HOT HOT HOT!!!

Don't be discouraged - and keep posting > it isn't the first or the last time
a cormorant will be squawking when pelican dives into the flock and pulls out a fish that is too big for a cormorant to handle...

Maybe if you quit catching so many nice fish and quit posting your novelettes that start threads all by themselves you wouldn't have so many critics?

Oh wait, it's good to have critics, it means they are actually reading your chit and paying attention...

Never mind...

Josh, as long as you don't start posting pics of how you cooked the fish like someone we know, I don't think you need to worry about the Least Terns...now if you can cook like that someone and post pics, the vultures will come out...

I have kept a close eye on the not so dark skinned DARKHORSE and these last few posts specifically; I have got me on defcon4 as a fair weather angler I watch and wait. I concur with ROONEY given em all the bird. You and only you can prevent getting skunked, and if you fail over, over, over, over, and over again, it is then you will finally shut up and FISH with your true instincts, use all resources, Listen and read between the lines, or just follow the horse out the stable and stalk the unshaven redhead dude on the yak. It is only then when you finally look yourself in the waters reflection, that you will realize, truly you are nothing other than a cormorant. Keep on squakin josh!

I guess it all boils down to this. Your "funny" post was judgmental of people that you don't know. I spend ALOT of time on my phone on this site because like most people, I do have a very demanding job. I dont think anyone needs coaching to get off their ass to fish. If I had my way id quit my job and be the only none fish catching kayak fishing guide and id follow you around watching you pull fish from the water in awe. but alas, I cannot. I will continue to get myself through my work week fucking around on this board and fishing my ass off every weekend.

And I know very well williams syndrom has nothing to do with me. I talk way to much to be associated with that.

Obviously.

I know this is politically incorrect, but as some of you have realized about me, I have no problem saying the old saying... It makes so much sense.

Arguing on the internet is like running in the special olympics... even if you win, you're still retarded.

I can say that because I have a retarded friend.

I got the fish report out of it as well, but I always take the "photos" and think more along the lines of,"He probably caught that fish 2 hours ago and moved somewhere else to take the picture..." LOL

But You can bet your ass I'm gonna put MY ass on that picture spot first!! :)

HowTo:Win a fight on the Internet

With a bit of practice (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Trial_and_error?action=edit&redlink=1), you can defeat your enemies (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Nerd) in online arguments (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Fight). First of all, you must redefine words like "defeat", "enemy" and "argument".

Basic Steps
Its easy enough to get in a fight on the internet. Once you're in it, here are the steps you must take to win:

Step 1. Make up lies about the other person. Don't bother to know the facts (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Truth) -- it will make you look too determined. This way if you lose, you can just say that you didn't care anyway. This is also known as an ad hominem (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Ad_hominem) attack.

Tip Poor spelling is important. It gives you something to go back on. If someone is able to turn what you said around on you, you can say that you actually said something else and that you're just a bad spellre.

Step 2. The other person will defend themself. Retaliate with untrue (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/False) accusations. If they prove you wrong in some way, drop it and move on. A common mistake here is to step back and look at the situation. Never look back. Some people continue to be proven wrong and this causes them to research their claims before they state them. This is always a big mistake.

Step 3. If it ever looks like it is going downhill for you, call the other person a Nazi (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Certificate_of_Hitlertude) . This is equivalent of an argumental nuclear bomb (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Nuclear_bomb).

Step 4. Always get the last word. You can't lose if the fight isn't over, so make sure that you always get the last word. Beware that if you resort to calling your enemies Nazis, they are obligated by law to reply telling you that it is in fact poor argumental skills to call someone Nazi. This is universally understood to be the end of an argument. Be prepared to break the Geneva Convention (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Geneva_Convention?action=edit&redlink=1) with more name-calling and declaration of victory (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Victory).

Step 5. If all else fails...make a comment about how many more myspace comments you have than the other person...cause you know...How many myspace comments one has is directly proportional to the coolness of said person...therefore you are insulting his ability to project coolness unto himself severely damaging his selfesteem and scarring him for life...this particular approch will stun your apponent for a few seconds while he tries to figure out exactly what you said...giving you ample time to leave the conversation hanging (see step 4).

Easy topics for beginners
As chinese (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Japanese) Kung-Fu (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Kung-Fu) masters will tell you, pick your fights. On the internet (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Intraweb?action=edit&redlink=1) it doesn't matter on which side (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Dark_Side) you're on. In his second post the admin sounds like a nice guy but my reaction to the first was "OK, if you are such a badass then why did you bother logging on to the internet and showing off your catch to these people you look down on so? "Shutup and fish" seems to apply as much to him as to anyone; preening like this makes you a Peacock!"

I recognize his right to be provocative. But of course some people when provoked will want to sound off. The threats made against those who did are the worst thing in the whole thread. I'm sure there are many more who thought it obnoxious but quietly moved on.

I trust the OP has a tough skin and won't be bothered by my comments. I have the utmost respect for his fishing skills, just think the the tone of the first post was a bit more insulting than he intended. I'm not saying this because I'm afraid of any tough guys out there, but because one day maybe I'd like to hire him as a guide and learn a thing or two.

The thead should probably be locked. If it gets deleted please at least leave the pic of that incredibly fine, glorious fish. If I ever land something like that in the yak I'll have a stroke and they'll find my cold body cradling the fish with a huge grin.

This is the most accurate, eloquently put way to describe my original feelings on this thread. My initial comment was made directly to the man intended but due to the platform on which the comments are made, a whole new door is open for hecklers, peanut gallerys ,naysayers and everyone elses 2¢.

Im not a tough guy. I dont go around disrespecting people. Especially not behind the mask of internet anonymity. And I realize as I type this even more people wil chirp in with thier meaningless blather. Im not throwing threats out there. Im saying ive never met an angler on the water that talkes the same highstepping garbage he spews online.
