A few weeks ago I decided to switch up my gear and go lighter. Originally, I started with some heavier rods and reels and as I got comfortable I went smaller and eventually got to fishing with my lightest gear. This hali was caught on a Teramar TMC-X76M rod hooked up with a Shimano Bantam Castaic CA-200, it only came in at a meezly 26" but it was a fun fight on the light gear.

The combined rod and reel weight are right around 1.05lbs

Nice video for the fight .

I like your rocket launcher setup with leash .
Is that Ram or Scotty mount ? Where can you mount it ? (can't be in the tankwell...)

My Hobie rod extension in the back (straight up type) is not as good as your setup.

They're home made rocket launchers.

Thanks for picture of your diy rocket launcher !

I will give it a try !

The straight up Hobie rocket launcher some time will tangle up with Hobie rudder (when kayak is not in motion ), your setup will avoid this to happen.
Thank again !

Its a GoPro Hero2. I use their video editing software to download and convert my videos, you can do some pretty neat stuff with it

Thanks for sharing Jorge! I love fishing light gear... makes everything that much more interesting. :)

Personally my "light/freshwater" setup is a Shimano AX4000FB on a Shimano FX-S70MB2.

It's definitely received its fair share of "wet noodle" comments; but hooking up 10 lb Bonito on 8 lb mono is far more exciting than if the spool was carrying 50 lb braid.

I have seen a coralation between light line and big halis. I don't always use the light stuff but most of my bigger fish have been on the 10lb. I'm not a meat fisherman and enjoy a challenge but when you're using a little bay bass rod, set the hook and feel heavy dead weight and then big old slow head shakes there is kinda a "Oh Shit, did I bring a knife to a gun fight?" moment. I believe this rig has 40lb PowerPro and as far as sinkers go I always use 8oz torpedos. This fish was caught in waters that were between 55 and 65 feet.

f I know I'm keeping the fish I'll give it a few whacks just to put it to sleep, it keeps them from flopping around and sends them nighty nighty after four hits to the head

Yes, I bring a knife to a gun fight but I always bring one of my boys as backup
