and this is the govs response to that claim
“Ignorance of the law is no excuse especially when poaching state protected species,” said Capt. Dan Sforza of DFG’s Law Enforcement Division. “Giant (black) sea bass are endeared by many ocean enthusiasts because of their size and docile nature.”

The article says it's a misdemeanor.
So what does that mean ?? - That they buy the guy a New Cadillac ??

What fine was imposed ? Did they confiscate any of his gear ?
Hell, if its only a couple of hundred dollars for a fine that would not discourage too many trophy hunters from taking one of these fish for a wall mount.
