Left out of Oside at 18:00 yesterday. Went to the plant, made some macs till sundow, then is was showtime.

Just went west, about 7 miles out and started the chum line. My buddy forgot the "other" big game rod/reel. So I took that as an exigent circumstance to use my CalStar 800M/Seagate 50 and tie on the leader to 65lb braid.

NO SHIT, with in 5 minutes of droping down I was on....click-zzzzzzzzz :D. She jumped out of the water about 30yrd from the boat, brought her to the side and BLAM! Shotgun blast to the head.

Caught my first and last Mako of the year. It was non-stop action for 3 and 1/2 hours. 2 released, 2 kept. Mine was 58 inches long at the fork...I didn't get tape on the girth. But, I estimate it less than 83lb, more than 70lb.

Did you really shotgun blast that thing to the head? Is that legal? Just curious cause I wouldn't know how to handle that thing either! Anyways Congrats on filling the freezer bro I can't wait to get one myself I've never tried Mako.

Should be about 75. Fun fish to catch good eating as well.

Congrats!

From what I read/heard is it not. I'm not one for breaking the law, but I'll take my chances with DFG, LEO's, etc., when shooting at one; when it's 01:00 in the morning and pitch black, common sense dictates.

To All: Thanks for praise!! I still would land one from a yak, no bigger than this though...:D

For safetys sake I wouldnt hesitate with a shot to the head. Ive seen
those things go nuts when you bring them out of the water. They have a
very nice set of choppers on them. Lotsa good bar'b'queing ahead.

:drool5: mmm...mako steaks.
We're willing to trade white sea bass and thresher steaks :)
Congrats, one is all you need for the year. We wish they were safe to take from the kayak. Maybe if we brought along a shotgun
BTW, did those mackerel glow that you caught at the plant?
