Have heard of nice fish caught on sabiki jigs as bycatch, have any of you guys ever hooked up where you jigged some bait and a predatory fish took the bait that hooked on ur sabiki on the way up? Any interesting stories about this?

hooked cudas and calicos while making bait in 5-10ft of water at LJ. they get annoying when you dont want to catch them. but they're never there to bite a hook when you are in desperate need of running away from the skunk. ;)

Sure, I've seen guys on cattle boats fishing for rockfish purposely drop/keep their rockfish on and bounce it off the bottom for lings.

true...but he asked about making bait on a sabiki. You drop a sabiki to rockfish land and you are in trouble.
Ive heard of people catching white sea bass while fishing for bait with sabikis. That is why you will see people debate over what size rod/line to use as your bait rod. Never know whats gonna bite it besides sardines/mackerel/etc.

Sounds like a huge tangled mess to me...LOL, Hell, even that many small macks can ruin a Sabiki.

send sabiki down for sand dabs = okay.
send sabiki down for rockfish = bad idea.
use lucanus jig for weight on bottom of sabiki = catch big fish.. but you lose fish because your sabiki main line is too light.
sabiki bycatches (with torpedo sinker) include rock wrasse. senorita, smelt, bonito, sand bass, calico bass, spotted bay bass, cuda, halibut, lizardfish, crabs, sand dabs, flounders, turbots, bat rays, leopard sharks, opaleye, smooth hound sharks, blacksmith perch, shiner perch.
sabiki bycatches (with lucanus) include the above listed fish and also black seabass, white seabass, yellowtail,
maybe you are thinking of how people hook up lincods with a rockfish in their mouth. that is common. but that has nothing to do with a sabiki. its more in common with using live bait.
