So, if you remember from my previous post two days ago

My friends are in from out of town and want to kayak LJ. I'm going to peddle out while they do the tour and take some photos. I'm leaving all my gear at home and just taking a pleasure day, been fishing 11 out of the last 15 days.

Well, the pleasure day went well. Had a lot of fun on the water, got to take my friends all around La Jolla and into the caves. They had a blast. The pup was soaking up the sun and was pretty happy to be out.

Everything was going great until I was on the beach.

Like I said, I left my fishing poles at home. I had zero gear on the boat. 20 years I've been fishing, and this is the first time I had an accident.

I was loading up my car and I saw out of the corner of my eye, a yellow hobie loaded with fishing gear about to get pummeled by the surf. I drop what I'm doing and I sprint out to the surf and try to catch him before he rolls over. I got there to late and he had flipped. The surf was pumping and the shore line was loaded with tourists on rental kayaks. I got between the steamroller kayak and people on the shore and was able to prevent any sort of possible injuries. The kayak guide was more than appreciative and I managed to get the unknown kayakers kayak and all his gear safely on shore while he was trying to get his bearings. He was pretty dissoriented.

When he got the the shore, I told him to check he had everything while I went and picked up anything I saw floating. When I got back he told me he was missing a rod. Thankfully I had my snorkel and fins since it was just a fun day in the cove. I run out into the surf and in a few minutes I found his rod.

I popped up all excited like I was the superhero of the day. I hold it in the air to show him I got it and then I get blindsided by a tourist kayak. I go over and on the way down I bury a 2/0 mustad in my finger. The ones with the HUGE barbs.

THE ONE DAY IN OVER 100 KAYAK TRIPS I DONT BRING MY POLES!! :the_finger:

Well I was like "fuggit, I'll man up" push it through, pinch the barb and pull it out. Too bad the hook was pointing right into the bone.

Well, to the ER I go.

40 minutes of a wait and I get a "We've got a specialist, hooks in skin is kind of his thing"

They numb me up nice and good, and pull the hook away from the bone and push it through the other side. They had some surgical sheers, the ones we all see can cut through pennies.

They give those sheers a go and they break. Next, they bring bigger sheers. Those break too, Ok, so we're thinking what else can we try to cut the hook. "THE RING CUTTER!!" says a nurse out of left fields.

They bring the ring cutter over and it doesn't make a dent

"I've got a leatherman in my truck" another redneck Dr says. Bring in the leatherman. Doesn't work.

Wire cutters? Yeah we can try those.

90 minutes later, the wire cutters arive and finally the hook is cut and out of my finger.

What a pleasure day

In the end, I'm glad I was able to help a fellow angler out, I've been the victim of many a surf wipe outs. I wish it didn't end with a hook in my finger, but it made for a good story. :D

See everything was going great! :luxhello::luxhello::luxhello::luxhello::luxhello:

Baaaawwwwaaaaahhhhhhhh, sorry I couldn't resist. All in all you did a good job of protecting others from injury and left your friends and family with a day they will never forget. On the bright side at least it wasn't your casting thumb!

Looks like at least 60 to 90 days off from fishing. Got to let it heal properly.

Don't worry, the bite should still be red hot around the end of November.:D

That looked pretty nasty, I'm sure you got yourself some good mojo out of that.

If I were you, I would go to Irvine Lake tomorrow and catch a La Jolla Slam.

Sorry to hear your great day ended in the ER but thanks for the pictures :notworthy:
It looks like your dog is having a blast.
I think you earned some Karma points and a Security token.

Wow Drake, even representing with a BWE hat in the ER. I would say you earned Karma points but by some of the fish you put up recently maybe it was Poseiden's revenge.

Nice looking out for the other kayaker and bystanders. Once it's healed it will be a better memory. :cheers1:

holy shit dude... Mustads for the win! :luxhello:

looks like you had a fun day though. you must have been sweating, peddling around La Jolla without a rod in hand.

Should submit your story to mustad hooks so they can market how strong their hooks are

Looks like 60-90 days off work so you can recoop and relax (at LJ?)! Sorry about the injury. Thanks for the story-good reminder to be careful.

Those are pretty much identical to the ones they used, except they were silver and in a sterile packaging.

So far the finger is fine, hardly noticed it happened.

I know the feeling. Last Sunday I was trying to help out this guy with a shark he had caught, about a 5' soupfin. Oh, that guy was you! Well at the time being I had a hold of the shark's tail and trying to get kelp off of the line. At some point in time I felt a pressure below my right hand, about the same time I felt a pressure, you said "I think I hooked him in the tail"! My reply, "yeah I think the hook is in my hand". Your reply, "I have on an iron"!!! :jig: "Damn" :( was one of few select words processing through my mind, oh and the fact I need to either get the hook out of the shark or me in a hurry. After about a minute the hook finally ripped out. At first it was just a big hole with worm looking things at the base of it  , then came the blood ...

Once I landed at the shores, went straight to the VA hospital and spent 7 1/2hrs in the emergency room waiting to get stitched up. Stuck got broken into Wed, so yes you and my buddy are correct. "No good deed goes unpunished"!

You have no idea how funny this is to me. Not because you got a hook in you....

but because while I was at the VA hospital a nurse guy said to me

"You're my second Kayak fishing accident in two days"

He told me that the guy he had Sunday was helping to get the hook out of a shark.

He cracked up laughing when I told him that it was MY SHARK! He told me I need to stop hooking everything around me.

Sorry again about what happened. :(

This is like tag your it. Be careful around these guys for a while. Or maybe the guy who hooked you is next.

Drake, post up where you're fishing next so we can avoid the area........

Better idea: Pointless hooks!
