With the MLPA? Where in the La Jolla Kelp beds are open and how far of a paddle is it to get to any of the kelp if I launch from the Shores? Also if you launch from Shelter Island or? Are the Pt Loma kelp beds do-able. I've only fished there from small power boats. Thanks all, glad I found this forum, learning alot in a short time!

la jolla kelp is about 3/4 mile out from the la jolla shores launch

PL kelp doable from shelter depending on your stamina
if you are going to fish the point loma kelp make sure you time the tides, you want the tide going out when you are and coming in when you are and it will make it much easier
it may be easier to launch out of mission bay and hit the north PL kelp, again time the tides.

I take it that Red is no go and Blue is open? Does this map change during different parts of the year?
Thanks for the alternate to Point Loma !

red is NO go and blue you can only take bait to make it less complicated.

So for my simple and feeble mind I need to paddle out past both the blue and red areas if I plan on fishing for anything to keep!
tks

To make it simple, paddle out past the two yellow buoys and keep paddling to Point La Jolla (just a little farther) which sticks out and is a great landmark.

Wow looks like someone read my mind, cause I was about to ask everything that was just asked.
But 1 question?
The red and blue ares are RED- SMR & BLUE- SMCA, are they part of a mlpa? Or are they strictly just from the state?

sorry not trying to be condescending, less complicated
both SMR & SMCA = Marine Life Protection Act, best just to stay out of those area's
go out past the point in LJ and you will be fine

Thanks everyone for clearing things up for me especially the last link Roadx,
The GPS co-ordinates and the visual reference points really helped.
Since I've always fished from a friends power boat I knew the MLPA was there but never gave it much thought til now.
