BE WARNED!!!

This job/install is not for beginners. If you don't have the know how, the tools, the patience and the guts to cut a big hole in your kayak have the Pro's at OEX do it. I haven't gooped it down, I'm going to leave it alone a few day in the sun and allow the kayak/plastic to form itself to the frame.

Nice installation pictorial! Do you have anatomical clearance issues when you access the hatch while underway?

nah probably not....jorge has skinny bird legs! He'll probably have to jump out of the kayak to open the new hatch...!

Other than measuring sixteen times and cutting the hole smaller than what I actually needed and than making larger until it was cut to size the only 'clearance' issue you need to keep in mind is that you should setup the hatch so that it opens away from you and not towards you. I'm sure it will require a little more clearance than the round hatch did but the storage benefits should/will out way that issue. I'll have to admit that I was nervous at the beginning but once I cut into the kayak there was no going back.

You're helping me to get the guts up to try something like this on my Prowler.

So, approximately how much would OEX charge to do that to an Outback?

You can swap out the "tackle management" for the rec bucket for $20 on the PA 12 center hatch. You can also replace the round 8" on the Outback with the rec hatch, add the bucket, hardware and free install for $120 :D

Day 1 of testing results are in:

The inside of my hull is as dry as the elbows and knees on Candy. Funny thing is that when I had the stock round hatch I would always have a small amount of water in my hull, nothing major or even enough to be concerned about but I still had water. With this new hatch I couldn't find a drop of water...........maybe it was the 1 1/2 tubes of marine goop that I used to seal it.
