2013 Islander Mothership Schedule

<hr style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff; COLOR: #ffffff" size="1"><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->Here we go! If you've done these trips before, you don't need any convincing. If you've never done one, you owe it to yourself to get on one of these trips, they are unlike any other kayak fishing experience. As always, live bait, food and sodas are included in the price. Beers and tips are additional. We did have a $5 price increase on the 1.5 day for 2013. Sorry guys, they've held it off the last three years for us, but finally had to bite the bullet and increase the 2.5 day charter to $515 for 2013 -$20 price increase

1.5 day trip $315
May 17-19 Fri-Sun SOLD OUT
$315 per person

2.5 day trip $515

May 24-27 Fri-Mon (Memorial Day weekend)
June 20-23 Thur-Sun SOLD OUT
$515 per person

We will have the same booking process, so take note of the following:

When you call to register your spot, we will take a $50 non-refundable deposit. The only exceptions to this refund are if the trip does not run (due to weather, or lack of sign ups, acts of God) A week or so prior to the trip, we will contact you for the remaining balance. Once the remaining balance is paid, that is also non-refundable. If you'd like to pay more than the $50 deposit, that's up to you, but it will also be non-refundable in the event something comes up that keeps you from doing the trip.

*Special note from The Islander: For all 2013 charters ALL Hobie Pro Anglers will not be allowed on the Mothership Charters.

It's not the $50 bucks that I am worried about, it's the other few hundred and the three missed days. The woman does not like it too much if I am gone overnight. It is nice to be loved though. She doesn't mind a couple trips a year, so I guess I need to think it over. This place is a bad influence....:D

I read somewhere it was because of the weight. Captain doesn't want to over-work the crew. Something along those lines.

OEX
12-09-2012, 01:59 PM
RE: PAs

Islander guys told us it creates a safety issue for the crew- Too heavy to get on board and off, especially in an emergency. Also their racks were made to accommodate the correct amount of kayaks for kayak trips and PA's take up more room then traditional kayaks.

Most of the guys that grabbed June was because we were on the same trip last year. I think there are at least 12 repeats on the June trip. We had very windy days and had to move all over the island to look for a place to fish. But we had a good time with a great group of guys.

Total count is 23 with Easton going as the OEX Rep. Freedivers without kayaks are not counted here as they are booked by The Islander directly.

Last year there were 24 including the PA which took up extra space plus freedivers.

I am in for the 1.5 Day this year. Should be a good time.

I/we like to show up around 2 or 3ish, gives us time to slowly unload, grab some lunch/dinner, shoot the sh*t with the other yakker's and listen to Matt's wonderful fishing stories, this year will be even more eventful with Frank joining the crowd.

Traffic on the 5fwy south can go from OK to HOLY CR*P, WE'RE NEVER GOING TO MAKE IT ON TIME! I'm not sure where you're coming from but if it normally takes you 2 hours to get to San Diego allow yourself an additional 2-3hours, you'll thank me later. The extra time will allow you to make runs to the grocery store, hardware store or tackle shop for anything that you may have forgotten to pack.

Rods and reels are a good mix that can handle anything you will fish for there. Take a few Irons in blue/white and scrambled egg and some weedless plastics in reds and greens. I would recommend that you get yourself a paddle jacket, not a wind jacket. If you don't have your Mini X already set up with a fishfinder and/or bait tank, I would recommend you rent an Outback for more room.

I enjoyed some on your videos!
Yes I do have PFD, forgot to mention that. So something in 20-50lb line rating rods are probably overkill, yeah?
And I don't have ff and baits and on my mini x. And trying to get a bigger kayak and insta both ff and bait tank.
Thanks for the info on the irons and plastic! Really appreciate it!

Just to make sure I won't be scrambling, I just took all my reels apart (just the light ones I may take with me) and are soaking in degreaser and will be servicing this weekend. Also building tow lines & tie-off lines & dock lines while waiting to reassemble my reels.

Already went down to OEX SSB last week to pick up the GB SEAIRSPORT SEATs I ordered and to finally pull the trigger on the Outback I've been talking about with "ANDY" over the last year or so.

Andy spent plenty of time with me going over the accessories I wanted and placement of some of those items. Tried to wipe out the option list as best I could, asked a lot of questions, Andy was a pure professional in his customer service. :you_rock:

After all was said and done I didn't' go over $2400!!! :D :D :D

With any luck , though I'm not in any hurry, I'll have it in a couple of weeks.
The maiden voyage will be on the "Castaic Lagoon" for the first few trips for the bass spawn, then out to Cabrillo or Ventura/Oxnard for some practice surf launches. Then I take on La Jolla & try to catch me a :wsb: or :yt:.
Hope to see you'll out there soon!!!

So I'll be ready for this trip a couple weeks in advance. (hopefully build up some good "JUJU/MOJO" on my yak.)

Tandems are fine either as a single or with 2 people. 2 people means 2 fares though as the price is for food, bait, etc not for hauling the kayak.

Hey all!

Our trip is getting closer! For those of you who have done this before, I just want to make sure I am bringing what I need. Is this trip mostly geared toward calico bass fishing? I was thinking of bringing a light bass rod that has a Calcutta on it. Also I will bring a heavier YT set up that has a Daiwa Sealine on it with braid. I have something in between the two, a Calstar rod with an Avet reel. Should I bring my Seeker with the Newell on it for surface irons or not the right time of year? I have a bass rod (Seeker) that I have a Shimano (new reel) spinning reel on it. Is this not the place for spinning gear? What else to I need to make sure and bring?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Janine:reel:

Bring the jig stick. Iron YT are always possible but iron calicos are a blast.

Ill bring 2 bass rods, a jig stick, a 30lb bait stick, and a 40/50 Yoyo rod.

You can fish spinning gear without a doubt, just the island has some PIG calico's so personally I would just use your caster and have spinning as a backup if anything.

Perfect. Do I need to bring equipment to keep my battery/radio charged (re; battery charger, multi - outlet strip etc...) or does the boat provide that? I am open to suggestions as far as what you think I might need to get the most out of this trip. Can you tell I'm excited?!!

Janine

On a 1.5 day you shouldnt need to recharge anything but no the boat doesnt provide that stuff.

My suggestion, Look at what you think you need 5 or 6 times because especially being your first trip, You will likely bring too much.

Also pack tackle so that you dont load 1000lbs of gear on the kayak. Remember you can take just a few items and come back to the boat for more. Making your kayak heavy for the crew just makes everything harder.

A lot of the issue is that PA's take of a ton of space and dont fit in the racks. When you put those kayaks on the deck it makes it that much harder to walk around the boat and creates unsafe conditions for passengers and crew. Especially if there are a whole bunch of PA's. Even on trips where there are just 1 or 2 it really crowds up the deck which is already a problem on these trips due to the amount of gear that folks bring.

The weight of the PA is only a small part of the reasoning, there are plenty of guys that load up their Malibus and make them just as heavy as a PA.

All 5 trips we are running in 2013 filled up no problem without people being allowed to bring PA's. Obviously this change didnt hurt peoples decision to go and most everybody has been very understanding and have made other arrangements so that they could still attend.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm signed up for the June trip. We cleared this awhile ago, but just double-checking. A Hobie tandem Oasis is ok still?

Siebler
05-01-2013, 07:35 AM
Your Oasis is still good. Although heavy and a big kayak it is still reasonable enough to put it into the racks. Same goes for any of the other larger kayaks (Ride 135, Xfactor, S-14, FnD). While large they are still a reasonable kayak size. The Oasis does push this envelope but there are very few of these that want to go on the trips and they do still fit in the racks. IF we allowed PA's there would easily be 6-10 of them per trip now days and lets be honest, a PA is not a kayak it is a boat.

FishNinjaY
05-01-2013, 07:39 AM
on a related side note...

I know the June trip is full, but since I am bringing a tandem, if I wanted to bring my 9-yr old son, would I have to pay full price? I doubt he's up for it right now, but just curious and thinking about future trips.

Thanks again..

Your best bet on that would be to Contact John/Shane on the Islander directly (Islander-Charters.com). We book in accordance to how many kayak spots there are available. The boat has far more bunks than what we book for and these guys do sell spots to Freedivers and such so I am sure they can figure something out for you.

Wow...hope everyone can shift their schedules around to make it work...

It's probably a good idea from a safety standpoint, but damn! Some of us that have been on a couple of these trips have seen what could happen with bad weather and kayaks...Believe me you don't want to be "That Guy". Hopefully it'll work out for everyone that's going.

Good luck!

lambadmin
05-17-2013, 03:46 PM
Yeah that's right.

15 knots was in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow. Kayaks would get blown around. It would NOT be fun as it is fishing that place in nice conditions.

John and Shane were able, and very kind, to accomodate moving the trip to Saturday night. Fish on Sunday. It is supposed to be much calmer. I guess only one guy couldn't make it, that's unfortunate. Everyone else loved the idea of fishing in nicer conditions the day after - back home on Monday, so you can go to work.

This may be eppic trip. YT and WSB have been romoured off lately at the SCI. Halibut is permanent resident in that place... Standard spots from Pyramid Cove to the China Head, all grounds that will be fished on a kayak. Could be a lotta' fun.

If it doesn't happen this weekend, I'm sure it'll go off on Memorial Weekend trip.
I'm on board on that one, can't wait. :biggrinjester:

Any advice for a newbie? How's the weather going to be? I've seen video and seems like people wear breathable waders or long pants? Is it going to be that cold? Yes, I'll be there.

Keep in mind that the mother ship has a skiff that runs around all day supporting your needs and there are also plenty of kayakers around to help if needed. Worse case you can have him fish near or around the mother ship while you venture out a little further. Everyone looks out for each other on these trips so you're guaranteed that someone will be there to help at a moments notice.
