The mlpa nor the DFG does not cares about that! The only thing they care and hate is kayakers fishing La Jolla.
BTW, The DFG has been hanging around the Launch in La Jolla alot latley.
Have your 2013 licence with you.

That's completely wrong!
Things like that are the cause of the depletion of fish in our oceans, not recreational fisherman.
I wouldn't be surprised if the fins on that roof represent more killed sharks than all the California recreational fisherman combined take for a year.
I recently watched a documentary about why the tiger is endangered and it was really shocking, tigers are being mass murdered for the production of tiger bone wine which is illegal yet government run tiger "sanctuary's" which are intended to breed tigers for release to the wild are mass breeding them for the illegal mass production of this is wine which they believe is a miracle cure for everything...
The asian cultures which encourages over harvesting of practically everything is just wrong in my opinion.

Something needs to change we can't let them come over here and keep killing our ocean.
There addiction to hunting and killing thousands of whales for "research" is bad enough but when you really think about all the stuff there killing to the point of endangerment its beyond sickening.... And the DFG has the nerve to say were the cause of overfishing. They close our fishing areas yet there's still trawlers along our coast from overseas catching our fish.

dont worry theres plenty of shark meat, livers, spleen and skins being processed in the factory below all those fins... tuna too.
and say theres 10,000 fins up there. divide that by 6 or 8. lets say 7, since most sharks have more than two fins right? ok so its 20,000 fins. still only 3,000-4,000 sharks. about the same taken in socal by recreation fishermen who do not use the fins, liver or skins. just want the meat and/or teeth.

it already has brother
when you said "OUR" ocean...you were right.
not to bring in the new year with yuckiness, but look into what comercial fishing is doing to oceans.... longlining, sharkfinning, traulling, and all the other unstainable fishing practices that go on unchallenged.

I use the fins for soup on the ones I catch, it turns out real good. Not sure what to do with the liver and don't know how to preserve the skin, which would be cool though. And yes, I keep the teeth, my grandson like them.

Have you seen the videos on how they gather the fins? Normally they catch the sharks, cut the fins of, and then dump the rest of the shark in the ocean. I have seen this a few times. If the entire shark was being used, I don't think there would be an issue, but that's not the case.

trust me, they keep plenty of whole sharks.... yes in some fisheries they fin the shark and throw the rest back.
Honestly guys, almost all of your comments are misinformed and opinionated.
The DFG is not the problem... its the special interest extermist environmental groups...
Instead of getting pissed off and screaming on the internet why not do something productive instead?
Educate your frinds and family about local sustainable fisheries....?
NOthing will change unless we stop importing fish from contries that practice illegal fishing methods.
It all starts with the consumer....

This does occur. But often times they do use the WHOLE shark.
Videos like these are made to serve one purpose. They aim to sway public opinion by highlighting atrocities. Mentioning that they also harvest whole sharks wouldn't have helped pass the legislation to make shark fins illegal....

Showing only videos like these to the public is exactly how the "blue shirts" got their following. That is why 80% of their numbers at the MLPA meetings had no clue that they were arguing irrelevant points. Most of their numbers thought that most species off our coast were almost extinct. They were teaching the school kids that we were "blowing up" fish and destroying coral reefs in our local waters. Don't get the tunnel vision that goes along with mob mentality.

i have not seen one video showing the use of any other part of than the fin. if it is indeed so often, why not more video evidence?
why are there countless examples of fin&toss as the norm not the exception?
instead of talking shit and making a poor attempt to make political connections put up some of this "sustainable" shark finning you speak of. :you_rock:

Well, i guess no one knows better than me in BWE about Hong Kong and shark fin soup, i myself born in HK and grew up there until 13 years old and came to LA.
When i was kid, i had shark fin soup quiet often, maybe twice a year, usually when wedding banquet, or family member birthday dinners, but other than that, we usually don't eat shark fin soup, but really, back then no one really think about how or who killed the shark, it just a soup, no different with chicken or beef soup, is expensive because is shark.
Not until recent years, media start to bringing up this issue, internet is easy to access worldwide, then i started to know how shark was killed, and how much money people made for these shark fin.
Anyway, a lot of Chinese ppl in HK or China, starting to notice the issue, and their media also talked about it, some big Chinese restaurant also stop selling shark fin soup, the only way to stop this is to education people, a lot of people just don't know the truth story about shark fin soup, most of them stop eating shark fin soup once they found out the true story behind it, including myself, and the ones that do the catching usually occur in South American or Africa, they basically just do it because of money.
So :the_finger:if you hate me because i am Chinese or i am from HK, i haven't eat shark fin soup for many years, and i never will again...:D

Take it easy there tiger...remember it's those damn asians were talking about here...they waste nothing! I'm sure the head and eyeballs make good soup too! And I'm sure shark meat is a good substitue for viagra...

Hahaha! Love that analogy. A Florida fisherman's not going to worry about shark populations (even if you are a newbie). I'm suprised you haven't sent us a video yet...bull shark towing around a P.A. in shallow, crystal blue water...it's coming.

my parents used to force me to eat random stuff like chicken feet, oxtongue grossness, snake-wine??!?! weird shit (by US standards, at least) but shark fin soup wasn't as gross as most. haha. ok, end of my thread hijack. i miss hk now. :(

look into longlineing, shark finning, aquarium exotic spe....you get the picture....it's up to us environmetalists...ooops i meant fishers/hunters/landkeepers and protectors of the gamelands we ALL wish to feed from.
it would kind of seem that "greenies" who wish to preserve the envoriment and those that seek it's bounty would read the same pages, yet not only a separate book they read, but a separate library they visit.

Redeye, the greenies you speak of now only want to preserve the wildlife for itself. They dont believe we are part of the natural food chain. The reason you only see dramatic footage is because that is what sells, and sells their causes to corporate backing. I know that I would not really be interested in watching a shark processing video (unless I was getting ready to process my own).

The big issue here was the complete waste of a resource when only a little part (fins) are used. If a group of people want to eat shark, let them. As long as this is not an endangered species. If they want to eat German shepards, I'll help them season it.
As soon as you start distinguishing your "choice" of which animals are OK to eat and which are not you put your self into a very difficult argument. Take the 1billion Indians (Asia) who think that cows should not be eaten. Wanna talk about choices.......try selling horse sausage in California(by the way it's delicious)
To the idiots that waste resources, anywhere in the world, Get a stinking clue!

i suppose there is some dramatization on part of the "greenies"...but from my perspective the environment is an issue many sides can come together on: whether it's cause you enjoy pristine trails and streams to hike and fish or clean oceans to surf or hunt we have to make sure these resources are around for generations to come.
pm if ever in the area and wanna discuss more/toss line/ grab a cold one...first rounds on me! :cheers1:
