I had a few hours to fish befor picking the kids up from school so I spent them on the bay. Luanched at J st and headed straight across toward the Cays. Trolling and casting a small swim bait got me 5 or so sub-legal spotties and about 100 short bites from big jack smelt. It was a bit breezy so I ducked in to the Cays and did a bit of dock fishing. A 16' hobie adventure is about the LEAST nimble kayak for manuveing around docks and yatchs but it did the job. I was flipping the pilings with large mouth bass style jig and plastic trailer lures and getting crushed by the bigger grade spotties on the sink. I used an old left handed abu flipping reel on a stiff 8' rod. I dont use lefties so I was just spastic getting the fish out of the pilings. Fun day with 6 of the bigger fish landed and released. Fun stuff right there. That reel looks ancient, good on you to put it use. I'd probably be spastic using a lefty too.

Nice spotties Mike. I'm hitting LJ tomorrow, maybe see if you can get to the canyon this weekend!

When my dad retired he worked hard at switching hands for casting. I got that reel when he passed away. Maybe I can master the switch hitting also.
Silentsmell, I didn't catch any halibut yesterday but they are in the south bay most of the year. Mostly shorts but some quality as well. Like most hali fishing you'll do better with live bait. When I dedicate a trip to halibut I catch live smelt either with an umbrella net or sibiki. Mike
