Shipping lanes are a NO-NO for fishing but if you decide to fish there's a chance you'll get a friendly visit from a boat that has a machine gun mounted on the bow.

Yes you WILL get a visit from the boys with da' big guns.
And correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there bouys with black flags that mark the Catalina Express's route?

So how do you stay away from this kind vessel?

Basically, from the lighthouse to the green buoy, then to the LA Harbor bldg on one side. On the other side it is most the area 50 yards off the rocks until you get to the other side of Pier 400. You can pass through the area to fish the other side, but are not supposed to stop and fish inside. There are some other area that you are not allowed to go besides the shipping channels. The channel to the West of the LA Harbor bldg from the water taxis to the end for example.

Speaking from experience, DO NOT UNDER ESTIMATE THE SPEED OF THOSE SHIPS. They may look like they are moving slow but trust me, they are moving much faster than you think and they will NOT stop after they have run you over.
When you cross the shipping lanes it's not like J-walking across Shady Lane, I'd prefer to compare it to J-walking across the 110, blind folded, with both shoes laces tied together, backwards, with oil laying all across the highway.
