I'm going to transport my kayak in the back of my pickup truck. How far can the kayak extend beyond the bumper when driving down the highway? Can I just put a red flag at the end?

Thanks for help!

Thanks for the info! Now I won't be so paranoid getting ticketed.

I looked it up a few months ago. I believe its 2/3 of your wheel base beyond the last point of support. So if your wheel base is 12 foot then it can stick out 8 foot from the last point of support. I took that as the end of the tailgate.

4 feet past your tail lights. I got a ticket for my S-14 being 8 feet past my tail light, even with a red flag. MC CHP. But I think I got that ticket cause I tailing the car in front of me. So in my belief he just threw the book at me. Tail gating and over sized load was almost 500 bucks. :luxhello:

Daytime it needs to be flagged and you need 2 red lights at night if you have more than 4' overhang.

Go to the nearest CHP substation or DMV (LOL :the_finger: ) & ask an officer for the specifics, or google DMV regs (CADMV.gov).
