Team Sea Level headed out for our first day of fishing the big hammer challenge (month long event). unfortunately our fish didn't count this time due to not having the secret item in the pics... and the fact our entry fee made it only an hour before we left and didn't verify we were good to go.

anyways. i hit up navarre pier and caught two spanish macks (my first) and helped a guy gaff a ray he snagged and he gave it to me. scored a cobia head and grouper carcass as well. bait was made. 8)

hit the beach and set out the cobia head around 400yards at 5pm.

also set out a big chunk of ray about 200yards. soon after dark it went off and hannah was hanging on to the biggest fish of her life. only to come unbuttoned after about 40 seconds...

i cut up the spanish macks and threw them out in the first gut. everything liked them.

a storm rolled in around 2am and we tried bunkering down only to end up sitting in the cars staring at our rods 80yards away. a few trips back and forth to check on gear and i was hooked up. Landed this guy at 5am

Love reading your posts. Detailed, lots of photos and there are always HUGE fish in them.

Made myself a promise to do the beach fishing thing this summer.

Sit in a comfy chair.

Cold beverage.

No kayak to wash.

chris how do you get a bait out 400 yds? More importantly how do you get a bait out 400 yds without having the eerie feeling that a bigger tiger/bull is near by as your getting it out ;)

Mmm... Spanish Mackerel is tasty. Makes for a nice ceviche.

Nice job on the Tiger Shark...

Dude, you've got some huge cajones for nose-gripping that thing. Better invest in a nice chainmail glove used by divers ;).

Keep the reports and pics coming...

depending on which yak we use, i paddle or peddle it out and drop it in either the first or second gut or go out to the blue water and drop the bait. 5-10lb rocks as weight with a 12lb mono breakaway line attached to them.

No need. its not as hardcore as you might think. 99% of the sharks i've had on the sand are pretty docile. i did have to work to get that hook out though. eventually i crushed the barb and it slid out. too much time working on it and we weren't able to get a tag in her. those 18/0 long line hooks have gnarly barbs.

chris 5-10lb rocks as weight for the bait? WTF lol can you draw a diagram of how the whole rig looks in the water? I don't need to fish something like that here but I sure am curious to see what it looks like.

still isn't working out. they are where i suspected they'd be, but i can't find the ONE! two weeks left in the tournament and i still have the only tiger, so that's a plus.

Friday night around 11pm our hunt began. several runs, one shark bit in half on the way in, two break offs, one spooled reel, seeing and loosing a Mako and one shark on the sand later I returned home at 4:15pm Sunday afternoon.

only shark landed for me this weekend.

we might as well be called the cub scouts.

sorry for not writing out the full report. tired and a little frustrated. hopefully i'll make up for it next week. Still the best way i could have spent my weekend.

Tight lines guys! 8)

its just like a carolina rig with a snap swivel, either sliding or fixed, wrap 12lb mono around the rock, tie a loop and connect. the 12lb will break away on the rock when its jerked and the rock gets left behind.
