I don't do that much research prior to a trip. The things I would look at first is weather then surf report. Other then that I'm clueless. I think responses from more seasoned kayakers would be invaluable to anybody not only to enhance the chance to hook up but also for safety purposes.

I like the surfline app for surf report

Surfline is good. I also use "Tide Chart Free". It has moon phases and tides for specific places like LJ.

Really depends on where the trip is, and whether I have experience there.

Last weekend I hit La Jolla - I did nothing more than check swell the day before.

Next month I'm planning a trip to Lake Shasta to try for Brown Trout and Salmon. I've never been there before, much less fished for salmon. You can bet your boots that I'm doing every conceivable search on the subject on how, where and why and where to camp. I already rigged a downrigger on the PA with a trip like this in mind, and just ordered $80 in the appropriate tackle (which will also will work for Halibut coincidentally)...

fishalerts is the only app i use for my phone. its great for looking at tides and MLPA zones.

windfinder, surfline, wavewatch, swellinfo are what i use on the comp. i cross check the sites to ensure the most accurate info on wind and waves.
