oh man, tough luck. It's kind of funny how you can hook em but can't land them.
Soon enough, you'll get the deal closed.
painful to read your posts about the ones that get away.

Cracking up right now. I feel bad for you bro. Still a little jealous about how much time you spend on the water though. Hey I think I'm gonna hit La Jolla on Sunday, you interested?

if you start taking your time to locate their gut, and stick em there first, you won't have that problem anymore. They will freeze on the gaff, and stay that way, until you take them off. feel's bad when you put a hole in them, and then they swim away.

Yea I tried but as soon as I got him next to my yak he went airborne then dove it did this 3 or 4 times and was still for even a second.
Ouch... Sorry to hear.
When you gaff halibut, don't bring it on board - let it hang on the gaff while you're running the gameclip through his mouth. When roped, then you should be good to pull up

You did better than me today. After you paddled off I fished off doheny a bit longer and then the harbor a bit, no bites. Then I went over to the rock piles off doheny and kept one eye on those swells. The sun broke through for a while at around 4, and around that time I hooked up a few short calicos, 11-12".

There's a net behind you...considering your luck lately it would have probably been better to net him, then smash his brain boat side. Oh well, live and learn.

Only use that type of net on for sure keepers. It will cut the tail on most Halibut which is pretty bad for them.

Gaff
Club
Clip
One stiff whack to the head will mellow them out long enough for you to clip or rope them

For Halibut, get one that has a net that looks like it is for bait. It will have small holes (smaller than the end of your pinky finger) and thick material (either woven or rubberized).

I catch and release my fish 99% of the time and use a large rubber mesh landing net. I bought mine from Bass Pro.
I've caught legal butts and landed them in the net without any obvious issues.
I also have a smaller one for trout fishing that works well (from Sport Chalet), minimize handling for a "healthy" release.

Promar makes a net with knotless catch and release mesh. It's very soft and the holes are smaller than a normal angler net.
The rubber nets seem like a good idea to avoid getting stray tackle caught up.
