Do I need a top shot on my line for yellow tail?

I use spectra with a short, 3-4 feet, of 30 or 40lb fluorocarbon leader.
Its a kelp cutter rig mostly but it works fine in open water. Is that what you
Were asking? Mike

Yea thanks mike, that's what I ended up using today, however the water was to cold and the fish moved deep.

yt are usually very line shy so fluoro is a must for me when i target them. depending on where i'm fishing, i'll use either a 3-6ft leader on top of 65# spectra (kelp cutter situations) or sometimes may spool on 50-60yd of the cheaper fluoro for open water fishing (kelp paddy hunting).

for the most part, its just the kelp cutter rig

Dumb question from a rookie here.

How do you know that the YT found the water too cold and moved deeper?:D

Doesn't it get colder the deeper you go?

The yellow tail will move deeper in order to conserve energy, not sure how it works out but it's the same with most open water fish.

Water can be warmer deeper. Depends on currents. Warm water will rise over time.
As far as conserving energy by going deeper colder water can carry more oxygen than warm water down to certain temperature and depth.
Cold water is denser and doesn't let oxygen escape as readily as warm water.

And there you have it lol

Please allow me to rephrase my question.

How do you know that the YT went into the deep waters on the day you fished?

Just because you didn't catch one does not mean they were not there.:D

You mean they were full from feeding all night, or my bait or technique was wrong or just that my bait was not Stinky enough?

Hmmm. Weird, YT were caught during the yellow tail shootout on Saturday. Not deep either...
