View Full Version : Revo Toro 50HS - Rod Recommendations for Kayak Fishing?

Has anyone used this reel while kayak fishing?

I just loaded this Revo Toro 50HS up with 65lb braid. I was going to put it on my Shimano Teramar WC Inshore rod (7'6" MH/XF), but I have an Avet SXJ on that rod right now.

I'm wondering if I should get a new rod, maybe a beefier rod for this reel? I think it might have over 200yds of 65lb braid, and has max 22lb drag. Any advice on what would pair well with this reel? I'm thinking the usual kayak uses, .. halibut, live bait, maybe Yellowtail and WSB someday? I imagine it would be ok for kelp and bass also, with the braid on it?

Thanks for any tips.

I have the exact same real spooled up with 50lb power pro and paired up with a Turners California Inshore rod MH 8' that I use for Chucking swimbaits into the kelp and also when I'm surf fishing. I had no complaints and you can't beat the price. Pulls those Calicos out of the kelp with ease.

wow.. I had a hard time chucking the luckycraft with this Toro.. I felt like there wasn't enough weight to get any distance on this beefy reel. Must have been me.. seems like you did ok on it. Thanks for the rec.. I'll look at the Turner's rods.. they are just down the road from my work. I also like the heavier Terez 70XH rod, but I'm thinking that'd be more for big game.

I have the same reel (lefty though) paired with a MH 8' rod. It tosses the LC great unless you are throwing into a stiff headwind. Try loosening up the cast control and only lightly spool it if starts to overspin. You will get a few birds nests at first but will get it nailed down soon. The LC is one of the best lures in the surf, halibut, WSB, YFC, perch it's almost the all in one lure.

a 7'9"-8' med heavy to heavy. Calico/ sand bass. I wouldn't use it for anything else. Could it handle it? yes it could, but thats not what its made for.

If you want a halibut/yellow/cbass reel go with something like a torium 16.

Abu Garcia Volatile VOLC80-6 or VOLC80-7. The 80-6 is a 8' med/heavy fast action rod and the 80-7 is a heavy fast action. The 80-7 is a beast. Both the rods were designed to fish with the Toro 50 and are only $139.

I just put a Terramar 8' 15-30 MH on mine and bought a second Toro 50 to replace what was lost last weekend.
