You should have peed on his tire. Even if you didn't need to pee.

I did that out in the desert once while we were pheasant hunting. The local F&G warden was a COMPLETE douche nugget. He had his sled parked next to my truck and was actually blocking my truck from leaving. He was nowhere to be found and I needed to pee so I dropped trouser and relieved myself on his state provided front tire. Doubt he ever noticed but it did give me a strange sense of satisfaction in addition to making my bladder gladder.

Up on the bluff above the cove would be a better place to pop poachers in the reserve. I can't remember ever seeing the DFW at the launch. Mike.

She stopped me and asked me a bunch of questions, how deep I was, what fish I caught, how big were they, what I kept. She even had me point on a map where I fished.

Beef, you've only made a handful of trips out there and seems to come back with a more interesting story each time.

I've seen the same truck and one other at the launch once before. One had the binoculars on someone down by the Marine Room, while the other raced down the beach. Never saw who or what they were after...

dido here !!
i'm glad to see them out where ever & whenever i do.
and especially like to see them checking fishing license, and checking kept fish for size & limits.

NO ONE should have a problem with them being there, or anywhere else.

if you are not breaking F&G laws, you need not worry about them being there.
if you are breaking their laws, you deserve to be caught & punished.

One bad egg does not represent to whole carton. Don't forget that.

Heres my rant. I've been biting my tongue on this for some time; previous posts have had the same tone. I've had the opportunity to work hand in hand with the DFW on large projects all across California (I work for an OSRO, my most recent stint was chauffeuring 4 DFW employees around an oil spil for 8 days straight, 1 biologist, 1 warden, 2 officers), and I can personally vouch for the generally happy demeanor most of them have. One thing that I feel gets overlooked by most of us (who just simply don't know, not anyone's fault) is that patrolling the beaches is just part of their job. Each of them has a specialty, and to be blunt, their personalities typically reflect their job title.

Having that said, next time anyone has the opportunity to talk with the DFW, ask them what their title is. Is he/she wearing a gun? If so, youre probably looking at a warden. You can figure out a lot about how the person is as a human being, thus giving you an indicator about how to talk to him/her. Be kind. They are enjoying the same sunshine you are. This "piss on their tire" attitude will make it worse for all kayak fishermen.

Edit- After I re-read this, it sounded a little harsh. You should know this isn't a dig at you, just the statement. See you OTW.

Anyone who has any problem with a DFW truck being there has no business being on the water.

If you're not doing anything wrong, you shouldn't have any concern with them being there...

and if you think as high powered lens is intrusive, imagine running into this

Just too clarify... I had no problems with the DFG being at the launch. My title of the post was supposed to be "know the boundaries. "(Stupid phone).

I was posting to remind people to know where it is legal to fish, because if not you could pay a heavy price.

Personally, I am glad the DFG is out doing their job.

Well Said.

I've come in contact with Game wardens on and off the water and none of them have ever had a bad attitude. Treat them with respect, and you'll get respect back. As others have said if you have nothing to hide, and you're playing by the rules, you'll be fine. If you are keeping fish that are undersized then you may want to rethink doing so. Believe me, if you think you are not being watched while on the water, you're wrong, I've known people that have been popped when coming back to shore. Be honest, follow the rules, and you'll be fine.

I'm from a small town in the Sierra Nevadas and they were always polite up there. Normally because there is one warden that has to take care of a whole county and rolling up on a bunch of crazy hicks by yourself can be scary. Especially during hunting season when everyone has a gun. I definitely support those guys. I hate regulations, but I am more about catching fish than catching and eating them. If throwing a few back this year means more fish and bigger fish next year, I am all about it.

For the record, I've never had an issue with F&W in regards to Fishing. My issue has always been with them in regards to hunting and field collecting of other wildlife particularly of reptiles (Another hobby of mine). And I support 100% them in regards to upholding the existing regulations. My issue has been with wardens that cant tell the difference between species of animals and always choose to cite rather than research to find out if what they're doing is right. Many of them couldn't tell the difference between Lampropeltis Zonata (California mountain kingsnake) and Lampropeltis pyromelana (Arizona mountain kingsnake). I know LOTS of people that have been cited, and had animals confiscated only to be proven to be in the right and IF they get their animals returned they're rarely in decent health.

Just been my experience.

Do what's right. Pay your dues. Pay your fees.
If you decide to "test" the system, already knowing the rules, well then...
They decide to do a job, knowing full well that some people don't like them.
For that, I will gladly shake their hand. That takes schnuts.
Upon my last landing, I was approached by a GW. He was professional, polite, and super stoked on my catch. He asked how many I caught. I said one. He looked at my fish, and said, "That's a nice fish." Then he asked if I had a license to go along with the fish. I said of course.
Play hard, but play smart...so you can play tomorrow.
To raise your finger, or your leg to the man, the game, the system...is an action that speaks for all of us. Remember that.
It was said before, if you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about.
See y'all on the water.

Could you imagine how long the resource would last without the stewardship of the DFW and it's wardens?

There is a phrase coined by Garrett Hardin in a 1968 Science magazine article called "The Tragedy of the Commons"...it says "Freedom in a commons brings ruin to all."
The basic tenet of this theory is that unrestricted freedom to use a resource always results in the destruction of that resource. A commons is an unregulated resource that is open to everyone, such as an unfenced cattle range, a pasture in a public square, a vast heard of wild buffalo, a flight of passenger pigeons-and AN UNREGULATED FISHERY.
As RobFish said "It was said before, if you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about."
Good Luck

Was this an actual DFG Warden? Or enforcement?

This sounds like the DFG person that is almost always at the ramp and parking lot in Dana Point, has a measuring device, plastic map, etc.. asking those exact same questions to everyone coming back in. I think it's data collection, not necessarily "enforcement". Someone told me that they chatted with this person, and was told as much.. that even if someone brought in an illegal sized fish, they couldn't do anything about it, except maybe copy down a CF number if possible, and report it back to the office.

Anyways, I've never had an unpleasant experience with DFG. I only wish there were more of them, and they would be there all those times I see the illegal bucketeers poaching everywhere. :toetap05:

the people you speak of at DP are usually interns or work for DFW. They are non DFW uniformed and don't have badges. They usually wear street clothes and have that clipboard and measuring device. They are simply data collectors. So that is why they ask... what did you catch, where, how big, how deep, how often do you fish, etc.

Ive talked the female data collector at least 5x out of dana and shes even been out on the cattle noats with me. She told me herself shes not enforcement, she cant do anything even if people had undersized fish except call the warden and report it. But shes always been super nice and pleasant. Also ive never run into a warden that hasnt been a cool guy. Im actually looking at employment as a game warden.

I spoke to the guy in the truck at La Jolla a few weeks back; nice enough and just checking out the waterfront. I asked him how the new boundaries were working, he said try to keep about 75 yards beyond the old yellow buoys and you're fine. I described the kelp are I was in he said you are way outside, he mentioned two points of reference; the pier and a building on the point.

Essentially he was informative and pleasant in spite of the gun and such.

The pissing on the tire mentality has no place here at all.

On sunday, she said she was just a biologist with just a few questions. I didn't know if she was trying to get me to slip by thinking she wasn't out to pin me with anything or just doing a survey. She asked me if I had a daily permit or a annual licsense and was surprized to find out that I have a lifetime.

If the uniformed person is wearing a gun then he/she is a warden.

If no gun, then it is a surveyor. They don’t issue ticket, but maybe they can call the warden.

Personally I have made friends with several of them, and they have been very courteous.

One of the nicest ones was warden in Catalina. Now he has SD area.

I go fishing to have fun. If I have to worry constantly about getting busted, then it is no fun.

I've had one encounter with a warden at the LJ launch. Nice guy.
I wonder how many idiots get tickets there for no license or bad catches? I personally have never seen anyone fishing inside the buoys. Close to them yes but never straight out poaching.
I follow the rules and LOVE when someone without a license gets busted.
I'm glad they're around and enforcing the law.
Just my 2cents.
