Well hit the Bay this morning with hopes of finding a keeper Halibut. I was using frozen anchovies with a Carolina rig, tremble trailer hook. My first drop and about 2 min go by and the rod tip bends and dances a little. I start to reel and feel the weight with kicks to the bottom off and on. When I get it close I realize its a big ass lobster, lol. While I was reaching for my net he managed to get off. I marked that spot to save that location for another month. I re rig and have it out for a while. With my other pole I ended up getting a sculpin. A little bit after that I hook into my first Halibut from the yak. Not a keeper but a good fight. Shortly after I had re rigged I hook into something that take some line. It ended up being a bat ray. The rest of the day was lizard fish, kelp bass, and sand bass. Nothing to take home for dinner, but another fun day on the water.

Frozen Anchovies is always a good go to bait. Sculpin love them. Lobsters love them as do halibuts. Try live anchovies or sardines for the halibut.

Sounds like a great first time out

Also don't keep lobster out of season or caught on a line.

Why not keep the sculpin for dinner?

Do not need a ruler. The top leg of your lip gripper should be 9 3/4 inches long, add 1/4" and know! Measure it just for sure.

I fished the bay a few times last week and the bite is pretty wide open still. Once you get the bay figured out, you will find that are some very nice fish to be caught. Nice work on first outing....
