I was recently talking with a guy I met at the boat launch. He was telling me how you can use Tequila to kill a Halibut. He said to put some in a spray bottle and spray it in the gills. According to him, there's an immediate reaction, it kill them instantly. Has anyone ever heard of, or used this trick?

sounds like a waste of tequila to me...if you have to kill'em...a couple of good whacks with a billy club'll do it...and if that doesn't work a few more whacks...etc...

Alright, un-proven science-y train of thought here, but alcohol burns. Wouldn't it burn the gills of the halibut? Causing it to freak out... Maybe.

I think you were getting your leg pulled.

If it goes bonkers just tell it to STOP
If it doesn't stop going bonkers tell-em to stop or you're going to get mad
If it still doesn't stop going bonkers tell to you're going to get really really really mad......that usually works:D

I have actually heard about this exact thing like ten years ago. Someone told me that it is the alcohol that kills the fish when it is run over the gills. I had heard you could use vodka but have never tried it myself.

You goys are funny. I don't know MRG. Your train of thought makes since, but alcohol has knocked me out before. So I can see it knocking a fish out instantly. I saw a guy out at La Jolla Clubbing the hell out of a huge Hali. It looked like more work than a quick couple of squirts to the gills. I've just been holding them down with my legs when they go crazy. I'm going to going this a try. He sure did a good job of selling the theory.

I like my Halibut shaken but not stirred, never on the rocks!

Gets absorbed through the gills into the blood stream? Instant od?

Most San Diego Halibuts have a high tolerance to alcohol, and will generally flap their tail twice if they want another shot of tequila. They tend to be restless, irritable and discontent until they are able to drink the whole bottle of tequila and then they black out in about 2-3 minutes and you can slip the game clip in while they are sleeping...:cheers1:

I hear about all the seasoned halibut hunters using billy clubs. I don't plan to buy a club, but I do have a knife. I've never landed a legal hali on the yak so never had the need to kill one.
What about stabbing its brain with the knife and wouldn't that work?

Is it possible to brain spike a halibut like you would a tuna?

Killing it and marinating it at the same time...sounds pretty efficient to me.

Halibut are just plain mean creatures to begin with... Imagine how mean and pissed off one would be with a hangover. Plus if they get all wasted instead of dying they will spend the rest of the day bugging you to hit the Mexican drive through on the way home. There's no need to buy it a drink, just clobber it.

It works.
Alcohol is an anesthetic. I knew a diaper hanger from the Caribbean that trolled from island to island and bringing a hot 'hoo on board a sailboat wasnt wise. he would spay vodka in the gills to knock it out to bring aboard. A waste for a but if you ask me.

I`ve seen this technique used on dorado in loreto. The pangero poured a shot of what he said was tequilla and the fished immediately lost all color and stopped moving. Don`t know if they were dead or just passed out....come to think of it, it had the same effect on one the our friends down in loreto that trip!

I was wishing I had some to try today when I was wrestling a big angry wet slippery Halibut. I almost lost that battle.

today you would have needed 2 1/2 pints of Jose Cuervo - one for each fish...

I was out on the red rooster a couple weeks ago and some guys from New York said that they spray vodka on big bluefin tunas gills and they showed us on our tuna and it worked instantly.
