well i guess time on the water is not the key to catching fish. launched at 1215 and landed at 530p with nothing to show. i did catch a bonita which was fun. and a rock fish that was released. incidental catch not targeted. i need to look up the regs on those to see if i can bring home dinner one of these days.

so where at the pier is it legal to fish for bait? the north side? in front or south? could someone link to a map? i paddled to the kelp and spend all day trying to make bait with no luck. i'm sick of the whole kelp thing and am thinking of going north along blacks and beyond.

thanks for the help and congrats to those that caught

Dave,
The area all around the pier is legal.
To locate the boundries:
*If you carry a GPS the most accurate is the coordinates listed in the CDFG regulations.
*Ecological Preserve Boundry Map & Rules:
http://scilib.ucsd.edu/sio/ocean/uwpk/page3.html
*A map is posted at the launch.
*The boundry is marked by bouys, (although the bouys move alot).
Thanks for your report and Good Luck!

Dave. As you paddle north toward the pier, you will see that the private houses end and a parking lot for Scripps Instititute sits on the short bluff above the beach and 100 yards or so south of the pier.

The southern edge of the parking lot is where the reserve ends!

Anything North of it is open for fishing.

BTW, the bait will usually (not always) hold to the pier in the dark. This year has been odd in that the bait may be there for some short period after sunrise, but it is rare that it's there in the afternoon. Some of the afternoon shift guys might have found bait there in the afternoon this year. They might clarify.
