I have 2wd and no way would risk it. But here's what I have used in the past when stuck at Ponto in Carlsbad.
Air down the rear tires to about 20lbs, spreads the tire out and stops it "cutting" into the sand, take your floor mats from inside the truck and wedge under the tires, ahead of them to assist with grip, gather kelp, seaweed etc and use as much as you can, make sure no ppl ahead of you...floor it

Like I said, it's just a matter of time before I get stuck and need an assist. I do love my car though and the fact that I get as much use out of it as people get out of SUVs. Nobody ever believes me when I tell them I put my yak on top and drive right on the beach with all my gear in the back. And because it's a TDI I'm still getting almost 40 MPG average fuel consumption combined city and hwy.

Always keep a few 2x4s in the trunk to place under the tires for leverage. Something I learned from living around Nor'easters back East when you're stuck in several feet of ice and snow.

I always make a good runway, rev a few times punch it in first, quickly into second and glide across the sand. Haven't been stuck yet. Last year I got sand trapped a couple times. It's just like fishing la jolla.

Why I carry a towstrap at all times.

Some times a bucket will get you some traction. Go to edge of surf fill up bucket full of sea water carry to stuck truck, pour water on loose soft sand, to make wet packed sand, repeat as many times as needed.

I've been stuck a handful of times, always when leaving...I've been offered a hand every time, once by a bunch of college girls lathered in tanning lotion. A good way to end a fishing trip.;)

Has anyone tried MAXTRAX or Smittybilt traction ramps? My friend who goes off-roading recommended it to me. They're a little pricey, but may be worth it.

Maxtrax work very well indeed. Use them as a shovel first too to get under the tires. There are a few problems at the LJ launch.
Most don't realize this but there are STOP signs in both directions located right at the seam between the pavement and the sand. If you could just carry a little speed on/off the sand, most vehicles would be OK. However, once you stop you're pretty well stuck.
Combine that with the fact that clueless pedestrians, that don't realize that they're walking in an active boat launch, cruise right down the lanes and cause drivers to lift off the accelerator.
Add to that vehicles that have no place being there. Yes, there are folks that do very well with the tiniest 2WD cars, but they are locals that do this very often.
A medium sized truck with smoother tires for a quieter ride are el-sinko too.
An alternative to Maxtrax that also works pretty well is a 4' section of chain-link fencing. Rolls up pretty small, and can be easily tossed in a trunk/truckbed. Rinse off easily and have them ready for next time.

We were going to do that during our last trip to LJ but some a-hole parked his Porsche POS in the 15minute zone and behind him was some other a-hole, both cars were there for well over an hour.

The guys at ORW turned me on to commercial restaurant kitchen floor mats for sandy desert off road excursions in Anza Borrego. Cut it in two and slip it under the tires if you get stuck. Its some kind of rubber material so it won't rust around salt water.

Last time I was out, some tourist drove his car on the beach and parked right in the middle of the entrance and left it there. The lifeguards took care of it. :)

BillyV told me he had some mats from Costco that worked really well. Ibe use Waffleboards before they work good. Also cut up and ziptied together milk crates have often been spoken about on offroad forums.

I too carry a recovery strap and shackles at all times though.
