FYI - Spam PMs from "popkoferma" user account

FYI:

Overnight, brand new forum user account "popkoferma", likely a spam bot, was busy sending out nasty PMs to a bunch of other accounts.

Thanks to all that reported this to admins and mods!

Update:

In the never ending war with spammers, this seems like their new strategy. For a while now, we've been manually approving all new accounts - doing manual verification to make sure the newly registered account is indeed a human.

This particular account was freshly registered last night, and it was not even approved yet. :eek:
But it looks like it still had the ability to send PMs... :(

So...

We changed settings so only approved/"legit" registered users can now send PMs.

All those spam PMs sent last night have been deleted.

This particular user account and the IP has been banned.

To respond to some of you that were apparently under impression that this is something that BWE is behind - no, we have no interest in spreading links to teen porn web sites. Just like the best security practice is with your own email - no, please do not ever click on links in the PM or email notification originating from BWE unless they're coming from another BWE user you know and trust. BWE is a kayak fishing web forum open to public, and unfortunately, sometimes we do get spammers coming though our multiple lines of spam defense. We apologize for inconvenience - we will continue working to keep the board spam free.
