As much as I agree that this guy is a giant piece of shit, If he did keep all five, legally, he can argue there was another person in the boat that can not be seen. The entire vessel isn't in the shot and the burden of proof is on the DFG or whichever agency is responsible for the persecution. I would be surprised if this goes any further than the blasting of him on the internet. It's sad, it's a shitty legal system we live in and I hate to see this stuff happen.

This is unacceptable behavior and jack-wagons like that ruin fishing for everyone else who has the decency to follow the rules. Funny thing is he supposedly runs a sporting good store catering to water-sports, I'm half-tempted to walk in there and try walking out with something without paying! It'd be fun to say I caught his video and thought since he doesn't follow fishing regs he probably wouldn't care if I broke some other rules by taking something I wanted without paying. I could always use ignorance to fall back on if that's his excuse!

But, did he have another fisherman on board? Who was doing the video-taping?
If there were 2 guys fishing they're allowed to keep 3 each, and there is 5 on the stringer, meaning they (if there were 2 fishermen) could have caught 1 more fish.
I must not be seeing the violation/problem here, which is what?

He had a buddy with him (in a kayak alongside) who had two of his own for the morning. When George hooked that big fish, it took him way down the beach. His buddy followed him in the kayak the whole way. While motoring his Zodiac back up the beach, I'm pretty sure he put his buddies fish on his stringer so he wouldn't have to paddle his fish back.

George's other two fish were the result of a double hookup (in which he landed both), which I also witnessed. After he caught that big fish (3rd fish), he motored in. I was on the water before him and after he left that day. He only caught 3.

this is good info if it is true. The internet is so quick to hang anyone by a noose. This becomes a gray area in regards to "possession" limits, but that is very very gray and don't think anyone would think twice about it if they weren't his fish. Hopefully people continue to read through the whole thread and not focus on the first posts

I know several guys in the Malibu and Channel Islands area that have them and though they usually target halibut they'll hit the seabass as well. It's funny but every time I'm approached by the DFG up there when I'm in my skiff the first thing they ask is if I'm fishing as a rec or commercial. Hook and line commercial licenses are more common then you might think, but ask Dim Jay he's the expert on Malibu.

The reasons I reposted this are because he does appear to be alone in the skiff. Even if he is carrying fish for a kayak friend, that is illegal (possession). And I have personally witnessed this guy keep fishing WSB right through his limit, although not witnessed him keeping overlimits. I have heard of dumb things before, but a commercial fisherman giving away his spot (even it it were for next year) would be right up there on top?

I've carried fish on my PA for people who hit limits of WSB on an Outback and couldn't handle the capacity. Consider me guilty of possession laws.

I can think of two people right now that I know have gone out on a Monday and caught limits of WSB, then again on Tuesday during that wide open June bite. You're telling me you don't know of anyone... wink wink? Those people "ate" or "gave away" 30# of filets in 20 hours?

Another witness put his son on the boat. Who is right? It's not for us to decide, nor jump to a conclusion, additionally, the initial accusations came prior to a witness testimony.

I agree without you 100% on the difference between survival rates of WSB and paddie fishing. However, the regs don't account for a "survival rate" of fishing.

There are two sides to this scenario. What is morally right and wrong, and whats it legally right and wrong. You can say all you want this guy is a scum bag for keeping so many fish, but to say he's a poacher is another story. One is an opinion, one is an accusation. I'm not trying to be an ass, I'm actually trying to look out for the hotheaded, pitchfork wielding forum-goers who might put their foot in their mouth. This guy could be screen shotting everything we type and it's not exactly like our identities are a secret.


I don't agree with what this guy did, but that doesn't make it right for us to put him on trial. Like I said, the internet is disgustingly powerful.
