As of mid May this year, it was completed to within 3 miles of the main intersection of Bahia Gonzaga. I have been told that it is completed even further now. I'm going down in mid Oct so I'll have a better update after that

When you cannot plan for a trip ahead of time it means you are working too hard, or in the military. When you work hard, you need to play hard!!! Tight lines.

I hope that doesn't ruin the fishing for years to come.

Last year I was surprised that we were told that the bay is closed to commercial fishing in the Spring. There were no gill nets or pangas, couple years prior there were both present.

Gill netters were inside the bay and bottom trawlers just outside the bay in October when I was there. Mexico has I believe the proper laws in place to manage this situation but the enforcement is very spotty.

I just came back from there 2 weeks ago and stayed at Campo La Poma there were 2 commercial boats with nets there working the area pretty tough.

Looked like there was a lot of fishy areas around the smaller Islands thou and plenty of open ocean. We had all the trigger fish and Cabrilla we wanted from shore.(all catch and release) I would of took my Yak but had know idea I would be staying at such an awesome place. I bet it was loaded with halibut.

As soon as I get the footage from my friends camera Ill post some pics of this area. Im gonna try and get in on this trip. I more than likely have a beach house we can stay at if so and we can launch right from the house with 2 islands in paddling/peddling distance.

makobob
12-09-2013, 08:46 AM
North of Gonzaga is Punta Bufeo and Las Encantada islands. Way too many rocks to catch their nets to be gill netted. White sea bass, grouper over 100lbs, cabrilla, corvina, snapper, triggers, spotties and totuaba which are illegal to keep. That 20-25 mile stretch is very productive for kayakers. If you ever go, I guarantee you will come back. Happy Holidays.

Still working on getting these days off to make this trip for Baja or Bust but if I do I might be able to bring my friend who has a house right on the beach at Campo La Poma and we might be able to camp there as well.

It has a few Islands in kayaking distance depending where you launch and if the weather is good. Here is some footage that I have of my trip where Im talking about.

The video was a summary of our trip that I did for my friends but all of the "beach footage" is Gonzaga Bay where I'm talking about, although we did take a Panga in "Bay of La" for one day that is mixed in the video but the whole Jeep Ride and House is where Im talking about. If your on the fence about this trip Gonzaga Bay looks like the real deal! Check it out...

Gonzaga Bay is an amazing place. I can't confirm but I'll start checking dates. Do you have any preferred dates and how long are you vatos planning to stay? In April you're still at the mercy of the nasty north east winds. There are nice days in between but you can loose some serious fishing time sitting on the beach getting blasted by flying sand. Mike

I'd be more worried about the wind not only blowing your tent away...but also the sand, dirt and dust that's going to be sifted by the screens on your tent...that turns the dirt into the consistency of fine powdered sugar.... and buries you and all your camping gear...!

I gotta git me a new tent!

But does this not happen with EVERY tent on the market? If not WHY? BTW 29 March to 6 April, I may be going with a friend to Gonzaga to PRE-FISH the area.

I think the Kamp Rite tent cot will be fine. I doubt it will blow away since I am lying on it in a cot.

Closing up the windows should be good enough for the sand blowing?

What kind of tent are you looking to buy?

Not sure yet...probably something smaller than my 10x10 tent i have currently. Hopefully i can find something i can close up or tape up, to help keep most of the dirt out...

Don't over think the whole wind situation at Gonzaga. I was there for a week last May and did not have a tent or a sleeping bag. I slept on a beach lounger outside with a blanket over me. Not one day was I kept off the water because of wind. The only thing you have to be aware of is the speed at which conditions change. It takes literally seconds to go from flat calm to blowing at 30, but in the spring, you won't get days and days of this wind. Couple hours it dies down just as quickly and boom, you are back on the water.

Good day all,
So after reading a post about a guy with a surf board having gotten a ticket in baja because he had 2 ft sticking out the back. Will this fly down there. I have hauled this way as long as I had the yak driving back and forth to SD to NV to AZ etc having been passed by CHP and local PD regularly and never had any issues. Do you think I will get stopped in Mex? Does anyone else transport this way?

If it were me I would rig a tail light, brake light and florescent red flag to the end of your PA on the rear carry rail. You know the lights like the ones the tow trucks attach to the wrecks that they tow. You can find this at Harbor Freight for around $20.00 item#69626
Technically your rig is not legal in Calif, because you have too much overhang behind your lights.
Just because you have not been stopped yet don't assume your legal.

This might help. This is only for Calif. I can't give you any info on what Mexico traffic laws might be but in Calif the California Department of Transportation states:
"[...] whenever the load upon any vehicle extends, or whenever any integral part of any vehicle projects, to the rear four feet or more beyond the rear of the vehicle, as measured from the taillamps, there shall be displayed at the extreme end of the load or projecting part of the vehicle:
a solid red or fluorescent orange flag or cloth not less than 12 inches square, or
during darkness, in addition to the required taillamp, two red lights with a bulb rated not in excess of six candlepower plainly visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the sides and rear."

As for the length of overhang per California Vehicle Code Section 35410, "the load upon a vehicle, trailer or semitrailer shall not extend to the rear beyond the last point of support for a greater distance than that equal to two-thirds of the length of the wheelbase."

I hope this helps, if nothing else it will give you peace of mind while driving in Calif

Yes I usually have a bright red flag I got from NAPA that they use on semis on the back grab rail. I got those tail lights from HF they work pretty good so far. Man looks like I am almost there wheel base 139.8 I guess all the officers I see on the road either figure if someone runs into the banana the deserve a PA in their passenger seat or they are kayak fishing sympathizers :D The trick is to figure out what they consider the last point of support?
I have to wonder if the Mex officers will be as forgiving?

svendawg
01-24-2014, 05:57 PM
I believe your last point of support is the top of your extender bar. If you drive at night,(not recommended in Mexico) you will need to have a taillight on the aft grab rail.

It costs $35.00 annual membership but even after I paid the membership their insurance was cheaper that any other place I got quotes for. You can also get your FMM and Mexican fishing license through them.
You can also get up to date driving conditions from their website.
The club has been around for a long time. They cater to us gringo's that travel to Mexico

Jeff, we could put about a dozen of those under shade at the place we are looking at in Gonzaga. Those look better than a tent they do not take up a lot of space.

BTW guys we should know if we have this place by the 10th of Feb. If it happens then we will save the $20.00 a night on each palapa, which would make these Gonzaga trips very affordable, just the cost of fuel down and back.

As of today, the Baja Nomad Site is reporting the paved highway has now passed Rancho Grande mini mart and the Premex station. Pictures on Rancho Grande's facebook page.

If you were considering visiting the area, now is the time. If it's on your kayakers bucket list, in a year of two it won't be the same.

Anyone needing transportation for this trip, contact Defjack as he is looking for a rider. Save some gas money, make a new friend. Wally is right, now that the road goes all the way to Gonzaga there will be more people coming down. I figure within 5 years there will be more fishing preasure on the area. Now is a good time to fish the areas between Las Encantadas and Punta Final. Robmoney and Makobob NOW have a place to stay for just the cost of water. A 17'x40' covered concrete pad, with room to camp, cook, and shower. We start framing the walls on the weekend of the 8-9th of March. Have 8 people coming down for this construction weekend. Might get 2 walls framed and more sand moved, this will be a working weekend, then 20-24th will be a fishing trip there, then THIS trip on the 10-20th of ARPIL, anyone interested in any of these trips, just post or PM me. Thank you BWE, this is a FISH CAMP for all of us. DREAMS do come true. Work hard, play hard, FISH HARDER.

Just flew back from Scorpion Bay in a friends plane (yesterday). He buzzed
the Gulf side and yes the pavement is about 8 miles South of the Pemex.

CKallday71 contacted me yesterday with the news that life got in the way and he will not be attending this trip. Sometimes life is difficult and things do not work out, BUT we will toast his birthday and wish him better luck for next year.

Most of us will leave on the 10th of April. Pre-trip meeting will be on the 30th of March at Tidelands Park, fishing early, planing starts at noon. Hope we can all get together then.

ANGLERS ARE: Svendawg, Walrus, John, Johnny5, Makobob, Lives4thrills, Defjack, and our CHEF Buddha. This should be an AWESOME trip, done at the right time of the year and with 9-10 days to FISH!!!!!

We have 8 confirmed and there is room for a few more, so if you are ready and able let us know. All are welcome to join us for this trip. 5 weeks left.

Maybe Battleborn can drive with you I can ask him.

There will be other trips coming up. The next ones are in San Quintin with motherships going for halibut and white sea bass.

Sorry, I guess I misunderstood you. I thought you wanted to follow someone down there. When I go I will be staying until the 20th. Plus I am only able to carry my PA on top of my SUV and I'm packed to the gills with all of the gear I never seem to need but always bring.

No worries. I can drive but prefer to carpool with someone heading back Sunday night. If anyone has room let me know and I can break the bad news to wife that I will be gone that weekend :)

MakoBob & Buddha- So I (Jordan) might be able to get away next weekend 90% chance, but won't know until Wednesday if I'm 100%. I believe Romspacenut (Robert) is still in as we will be discussing him riding with me (depending if my Thule XT500 Xsporter racks get here by Wednesday, so I can double up the PA's on my truck). I know I haven't been in the discussion lately, but I've been following the thread and decided I'd like to check it out. I'd be coming back either late Saturday or early Sunday. Anything details that I need to know please message me as I'm a bit out of the loop. Thanks!

Looks like I may have a hall pass for a few days so looking to either carpool with someone.

Planning on leaving late Thursday night and making it by Friday early morning. And returning by Sunday night. Just need to be back before 7am Monday to take kids to school.

Looking to share cost of driving down and worst case will take my car as I could throw 2 -3 kayaks (reg size kayaks) on the roof. Have driven down baja even further and am familiar with roads.

PM if interested. Thanks

Just returned from Las Encantadas one hour ago, Friday nice, Saturday windy 10-15 but fishable, Sunday like glass until we left before 9. Yes it may be warm and should be fun for all. I left my Outback and a Stealth 14 there so if someone needs to borrow a yak the stealth 14 is available, Picking up supplies on Tuesday. The Baja Express leaves from Johnnys Shell at 515 Magnolia in El Cajon at 6am Thursday. See you guys there. BTW the FULL Moon might be up for us to enjoy. Guys, bring a jacket or hoodie as it can get cool in the evenings.
