I know that I need to install lights if I transport my kayak at night if it hangs out of the truck bed. Can someone tell me if taping two of these red LED sticks to the back to the kayak be sufficient?

What I found isn't specific on what lights. Just that two no greater than 6 candle power.
found here (http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/traffops/trucks/trucksize/overhang.htm)
LAMP OR FLAG ON PROJECTIONS:
Per CVC Section 24604, whenever the load upon any vehicle extends, or whenever any integral part of any vehicle projects, to the rear four feet or more beyond the rear of the vehicle, as measured from the taillamps, there shall be displayed at the extreme end of the load or projecting part of the vehicle:
a solid red or fluorescent orange flag or cloth not less than 12 inches square, or
during darkness, in addition to the required taillamp, two red lights with a bulb rated not in excess of six candlepower plainly visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the sides and rear.

Use a bicycle safety light and tie it to the rear. Cheap and simple...

You need two lights on the back, why not just buy towing lights and rig up a mount for them? That way you have running lights and brake lights. A cheap set is like $12 on amazon.

That's just more stuff to deal with; I'd rather not if I don't have too.

None of us want to deal with more stuff than we have to but CVC Section 24604 says we have to. Whether you get some wired lights, or mount some bike lights and carry around spare batteries, or mickey mouse some duct tape and light sticks, it's extra stuff to deal with.

I use the bike lights - been running them for over a year now and still on the batteries they came with. Mine came with velcro bands, so I just velcro them to the handle on my PA - quick and easy...

Zipped tied two bike lights to the back of the PA and it worked great! Thanks all...
