Olive Rockfish. You fishing up North?

Johnny Bass.

Same thing. Johny Bass is just a local name for Olive Rockfish. Olive rockfish are really thick up North where they come up into the kelp and tend to school up with Blue Rockfish or Blue bass. I've caught some local deep but they are thick as flies up North around Mendocino.

Found a great pic:

The fish in front on the lower left are Olive Rockfish the ones behind them and above them to the right with the speckles are Blue bass or Blue rockfish.

Love that picture that would be wide open fishing with Iron.

Yellowtail Rockfish

I'm sticking with Olive Rockfish.

Yellowtail rockfish have less rays in the back lower anal fin, and they also have yellow orange speckles. People often confuse them especially in pics taken underwater because the water color mutes out the specks but since it out of the water the specks would show, so if I had to guess I'd say that's an Olive Rockfish or Johny bass.

Here's a good pic of a Yellowtail with it's specks.

Nice toad!!

Yeah I'm still not completely convinced.

Olives vary in color dark to light depending on where they are living just like Calico bass. You obviously wrestled that one right out of it's cave. :D

Bluefin rockfish.

Many people forget to account for the reflective property of the atmosphere as it relates to the slime coat on the fish. Therefore when you look at a bluefin rockfish, you really are in fact looking at a yellowtail rockfish. To further complicate the light reflection issue, many anglers fail to use the correct dropper loop knots and that in fact turns our suspect fish into a juvenile Wsb!

There you have it folks.

I know everything, this is the truth.:D

Ive caught a couple hundred olives and that appeared to be a Yellowtail Rockfish, Olives even the smaller ones, usually don't have that much yellow in the fins and tails.

Without a proper DNA test this could go on for ever... LOL

North of Conception there are days you cant get to the bottom they are so thick.

I hear you Ryan. My first thought was Olive, probably because I've caught more of them, but at that size they are hard to tell apart, it's fins are pretty yellow and it could just as easily be a Yellowtail rockfish.

I guess the first answer is best since I've heard deckhands call both Olives and Yellowtails Johnny Bass.
