Boat Specifications for DVL and Lake Skinner


Boats must be at least 12 feet long, 42 inches wide, with 12 inches of freeboard at idle speed.
Kayaks and canoes must be at least 10 feet long, non-bailing and seating for all passengers. Sit-on-top kayaks are prohibited.

Only sea kayaks shall be allowed on the lakes and shall be launched only from authorized launch ramps or
areas. Sea kayaks must be at least 10 feet in length and provide seating for all passengers inside the craft.
Kayaks must be identified as stable by lake personnel prior to being allowed on the lakes. Rolling over of
kayaks in the water is prohibited

What is a "sea kayak" exactly? In my mind any kayak is a sea kayak with the right conditions and/or attitude.

No scupper holes.
I've got a tandem sit in kayak that I have setup pretty nicely for fishing as well as an X-factor...
Anyone else got a sit in yak??

saw LOTS of big fish though... 4-5+lb trout & BIG stripers...
nobody was catching them though.

From what I can tell you have to time it right to catch the stripers near the boat launch. Fish the day & the day after they stock the lake with Trout.... use trout patterns...
beautiful day on the lake though, wind picked up to 3mph around 11am. :D

Last I checked (about a year ago) skinner does not let s.o.t. kayaks including the pa. If that changed that would be awesome to have 2 lakes within 10min from my house.

I mostly fish Castiac with it and caught a few stripers but nothing huge.

Trout patterns after the stock is the best for bigger fish, but trout patterns will work any time even in the summer for them.

I've had the best luck with BBZs and Huds

Keep meaning to fish DVL, we should meet at the ramp some time and fish it together.

I was assured at my time of purchase. That the PA was allowed at Skinner. That they have used them there. It qualifies as a boat not a kayak. I have not had a chance to prove it. I am going solely on what I was told at Nomad Adventures when I purchased it.

I've heard skinner allows the PA but not DVL. I was told that DVL has the strictest policies. They want no body contact with the water whatsoever and consider anything with scuppers as being high risk for physical contact.

I got the Slow sink and mod sink of the SavGear line thru and pretty good action but at a slow roll does not really have any action to speak off takes a decent speed to get the good action. However a slow 2mph troll and this bait kicks great I am sure it will be a great bass bait, time will tell, Ive only had about an hour with it on the water so far. Next weeks looks like I will be able to put some real effort into tossing it for a couple hours.

That's awesome, I'm excited! I've never been there before, but that's going to change by next weekend! I'm sure you'll be seeing more PA's there soon. Anyone else down to meet up at Skinner next weekend for a chance at some stripers? I'll also be getting my hudds and alabama rig ready. :D

The striper bite at Lake Skinner continues to be really hot for anglers dip-netting some live shad for bait. If you get the candy bait, you will be in the fish. The best bite has been in the east end and along the north shore. The afternoon bite has been good, but so has early morning. Lots of fish to four pounds with a few bigger fish each week. Umbrella and Sibiki rigs, small swimbaits, and trolled shad-like lures or white flies are the backup plan if you miss getting the shad. For an update on the bite, call the marina at 951-926-8515.

Very nice setup sit in! I'm sure DVL will have no issues letting you on the water. Can you maintain enough speed to troll an umbrella rig? It looks fast.

Great action for the warmer water days. I trolled it but its gotta be a pretty slow pace. But that was with the floating model. Got the slow sink and am gonna spend a few hours with it tomorrow.

I was trolling a kwikfish... lots of drag. I was able to keep whatever pace I needed. only problem was the lure was turning my yak consistently to the right....

my concern with an umbrella rig is there is a lot of algea in the lake right now and you will spend a lot of time pulling off slimy green stuff.
The quikfish has so much action that it shakes off any algae.

So far everybody has talked about what they have heard but I'd like to hear if someone has been On The Water.

Just for kicks and my own curiosity I called the Lake and a lady told me that sit on top kayaks are not allowed only sit inside kayaks and they must be at least 10 feet long. I asked her if the Hobies would be allowed as a boat and not a kayak and she did not know.

Maybe call someone during the week and they may know more she was just reading the regulations to me.

I also called Nomad Adventures in Temecula and a guy told me that it can be hit or miss. He knows some Pro Angler owners that have managed to get on the lake because the person at the lake thought it was a boat and not a kayak. It is hit or miss but the regulations say that no sot kayaks are allowed.

Seems like calling in advance and giving them time to research could be a bad idea. If you don't live too far I would print out hobies Web page showing it's under boat and bring it along. If any issues come up take it out and tell them it's been let on the lake in the past. I would also keep the paddle out of sight.
