Trying to be ready for the warmer days. I was wondering if you guys kayak at night, and if so, what do you use as safety lights on your boats. I've seen some nice flag poles with light on top, but they are around $90.
Thanks

I use to put a bright electric lantern inside my yak. Depending on the color and density, it would light it up like a giant light stick.

The VisiCarbon is the best on the market. They may be 90.00 but they are 100% US built (not one part comes from China). Plus the manufacture is a kayak fishermen that followed his passion and created the awesome company now known as YakAttack. Nicest guys in the industry and support more events than anybody else. You cant go wrong, last light youll ever need. 100 hours of burn time on 3 AA batteries and super bright.
If 90.00 is too much also there is the non-folding version with the same light, the VisiPole. These guys start at 50.00 and feature the same light just doesnt fold and doesnt include flag.
On this subject, we have done a few large Group Buys on these products before. Is there any interest in trying to do another? In the past discounts have been as high as 20%. We just need enough people to make it happen.

Yakattack!!!
Yeah it's pricey but it's the best light out there, from an awesome company. They take care of their customers time and again. You won't be disappointed.

Whatever you do don't over think it, its not supposed to be rocket science. Also, when or if you do buy or build something make sure its waterproof and don't be afraid to spend a little extra money. A decent headlamp or a decent light pole may cost you a little more but sometimes that's the difference between your lamp working when you're ready to launch or you're lamp being completed corroded because the inside got wet.

Thank you everyone for your input. I'm in on the group buy as well.
For the solar light suggestion, I had some in my backyard before my dog chewed every single one of them. They are too weak to be used on a kayak IMO.

This light is not as visible at night, compared to the yakattack. The whole point is to be visible and in my opinion this one does not cut it. If you are around other light sources...like somewhere inside the harbor...the surrounding light drowns out the light from this unit. The yakattack version is super bright even in those conditions.

This is the light that Scotty uses on their light systems. I have personally never been very impressed by them however the cost is quite low.
As for the GB I would say we have enough folks so after the Fred Hall madness I will go ahead and set up a buy.

I purchased LED strips but haven't installed them yet, it's on my list of things to do. Not only do they help with visibility but green supposedly helps draw bait fish to the surface.

To my understanding, it isn't necessarily the green that draws them, but some of the lights are coated with a UV spray and that's what draws in fish. Dont quote me on that though

Seems cool but It doesn't help in the daytime (no flag) and it it would also vary in performance with kayak color and density.

I would have to say the ACR lights as about as bright as a birthday candle, Yes you can get by with it and attach it to just about anything but as for being visible to other boaters off La Jolla or even in the bay with all the city lights in the background good luck. I got this light a few years back and thought it was great because it didn't mess with your night vision, but after last season I went out and upgraded to the Visicarbon Pro by YakAttack and would recommend it to anyone going out after dark. You shouldn't be sitting out in the dark thinking is that boat going to turn soon or do I need to start paddling / peddling my ars off to get out of the way, this is what happened to me last season when a boat came so close without slowing down, I was flipped over off La Jolla at night and the boat just kept going, I was pissed but after thinking about it for awhile and getting the verbal ars kicking from the wife I realized I was as much to blame as anyone. Life is to short be safe out there and make sure your light can be seen when needed.

I got the yakattack right after lobster season kicked off and my home built stuff failed multiple times. The visipole lasted me many trips and has yet to fail me, I use it almost every time im out because I put a flag on it to be seen during the day. This is a picture of just the reflective tape on the visipole on my old yak
