La Jolla

I want to fish La Jolla, but I have never fished there before. Any pointers on what to do or not to do once I am on the water.
I have printed the MLPA map from DFG so I think I can avoid that area.
I think I can pull off a surf launch, though I have never actauly done it.
Any info is appreciated.

Troll a mack and cross your fingers, get a kelp cutter, watch for birds, enjoy the water expect a long learning curve and have fun and stay safe:)

For me getting out is a snap. It's the coming back and landing in the surf that's hard. I have only been out twice there. But it's amazing, not just fishing. The amount of wild life in the area is amazing. I don't have any fishing pointers. But keep your camera close by. Never know what's going to pop out the water near you.

Take your yak out and practice in the surf. Don't bring any gear. Launch and land many times on different waves not just the smallest ones. Get an idea of what you may encounter.

I'd like to try it out myself was thinking about practicing Saturday as it would be my first time ....wanna try without the fishing gear a couple times to try and get the hang of it .

If you're concerned about MLPA and have an iPHONE, not sure if they have the same app on Android (they probably do), but download an app called FishAlerts.

It will give you the MLPA and Gps your position relative to that area. It also has other useful info like tides, etc.

Give it your all out there. I wouldn't suggest staying out for less than at least a couple hours, it's hard to learn anything unless you spend a day out there.

Getting out though the surf is not bad, Watch the waves to figure out the timing and interval between waves, so as to time your self to limit the size and number of waves to cross. Really important never let the kayak get sides ways always go straight at the waves and keep paddling. In a short time your past the breakers. Here is a link to a video that Jim Sammons put on his site. A lot of kayakers have used it to shorten the learning curve of landing through the surf.
