Hit up the Islander with a bunch of good friends.... Again, the Islander crew proves once more to be friendly, and helpful to all the anglers on this trip... :you_rock:

One thing I have learned on these trips is that you are gonna get a lot of fishing done, so I was in no hurry to get on the water... One of my goals was a trophy calico, yes, I'd rather catch YT, or WSB, but I wanted a big calico... so I hit up the kelp right by the boat... Last trip on my bass rod I threw the channel island chovie swim bait, on my first cast, I farmed a yellowtail.. same thing happened on this trip...

One cast of my swim bait on my bass rod, BAM!!!!!!!!!! :yt: but just like last time farmed,,,, :farmer: So, I threw out a sardine... imediately got picked up... :yt:

Fun trip with everyone. The big fish didn't really show well, there were very few shots at nice sized :yt: or yt of any size. I caught lots and lots of checkers and a frisbee sized halibut. The crew was first class. Quick and on the ball with loading/unloading kayaks, bait, beer, and anything else.

Try holding the snout with one hand and the tail with your other and then turn toward the camera for the photo op.

Will, you'd be pleased to know I released all mine. Including a personal best ~8 pounder. They are thick out there. I'd meter what looked like a bait school in 100ft of water and sabiki up a calico.

Also released a big YT into the kelp :farmer: :doh:

I had a strange hookup towards the end of the day. We had moved over to the lee side of the island because of a steady 15-20 SW wind. I was out over the first shelf in ~200ft of water. Decided to dead stick a heavy white/glo iron with a couple squid pinned on it. Tossed it out and let it sink. A little ways down the line starts going out too fast so I engage the drag and start winding. Rod loads up a bit then a fish comes flying about 3-4ft out of the water straight off my bow. I was seeing it from the side, looking at it's back, and it looked about 4ft long. Kept winding but didn't feel weight. Jig cut off of 40lb. I'm pretty sure it was not a shark as I have seen them jump before. It looked more long and skinny with no obvious pectorals. I was stunned for a bit but upon reflecting I wonder if it might not have been a little swordie or marlin. There were a bunch of flying fish around. Very strange series of events.

For the record, I kept 4 calicos on the day. Tried for sheephead but just kept getting little whitefish and more calicos.

I would lean towards sword because the water is still too cold for marlin. Used to be lots and lots of swords around those islands.

You most likely had a world record flying fish.:D

I was thinking of taking a piece of wide PVC pipe to look thru the surface to the bottom?
