View Full Version : vape on the water?

William Novotny

Kind of a dumb question and a topic I have not seen come up on this board before. Does anyone vape out on the water? I struggle with trying to quit smoking and vaping has helped with that but I always end up back to smoking when I fish. Especially if beers are involved. I've spent a lot of money on a nice custom mod and I'm a bit worried about having it out on the water. Have any of you had any issues? I use a drip atomizer and it seems like a huge hassle to deal with while fishing on a piece of plastic.

Not sure what my friend uses, but he has the medical card and a crazy vaporizer. I took him out and while we were out just relaxing he broke it out and started using it with no issues. His biggest concern was storing it until we got out and he only pulled it out to use it then put it right back. Again, I don't know anything about it other than I took a friend out and he started using one.

I quit smoking using vape, and still use it from time to time (when drinking). You should just get a cheap one for taking out on the water. I would imagine a little saltwater (ocean spray) will wreak havoc on the connection between the tank and battery.

I've brought it out a couple times but unless I'm in the way out/in, my hands are usually tied up working the surface or tying up rigs

When does Kayak fishing not involve Beer, unless someone just doesn't like Beer? I can't help you Will, I stopped smoking cigarettes like 30+ years ago. I don't have a medical card, but if California legalizes (you know) I might have to take that up again.

Yeah once you start doing sub ohm rba coil attys, those cheap ones just don't do it for you any more. I guess I can put it in a zip lock and store it in my pfd.

get a cheap one for OTW? I got a few bottles of juice that I got from my brothers shop before he closed down a few months ago. If we ever get a chance to fish remind me and i'll bring it with me.

I've never been a big smoker, mostly when I fish or drink. Lately I've brought a no-nicotine ecig with me because I found it's not the need for nicotine, since I'm not really a smoker anymore. It's just the need to break up the boredom when dropper loop fishing and stuff. I only ever smoked when deployed because there was not much else to do underway 5 months at a time.

Quit smoking cigarettes years ago. I do have a penchant for lighting a cigar or two on the yak... Don't see why you couldn' t vape while floating on the brine...

I quit smoking cigs a few years ago by using cope pouches, snus pouches, and regular cope along with a few cigars here and there. Pouches are great on the water because of no spitting, no crap in your teeth, and you can just take it out and eat lunch or drink a beer. I do smoke a cigar on the yak as well once in a while but the pouches keep me pretty satisfied.

I'm trying to quit the cigars now and just bought my first disposable ecig two days ago. After reading what you use, I think I'm better off not getting into the ecigs and just sticking with the cigars :D

Here is the thing with ecigs.... rarely will the cheap cartomizer vape pens produce enough of a satisfying hit to make you not want to smoke. So you start with one, then you hit a buddys that is stronger and you want that so you upgrade. Once you start getting into it you do more and more upgrading (this sounding familiar to anyone?). Once you get into mods and rebuildable atomizer you start spending real money. My current setup ran me about $300. It's really more of a hobby.

I just quit smoking after 20 years straight. No vape no gum. All I need to do was break 3 ribs and have two of them puncture my lung. Which of course caused it to partially collapse. Quit smoking no problem!

I just cant get into the vape thing. To me they are worthless for anything other then wax. I will have a cigar now and then on the water. But I dont inhale :sifone:

Not quite sure what a "vape" is all about. I like to keep it simple, a small bong(filled with a nice blended whiskey) the size of my hand and don't forget the windproof lighter.

I wasn't a heavy smoker but smoked about a pack a week mostly while drinking for about 15 years. Two weeks ago I was discharged from the hospital for getting a tumor removed from my bladder, all due to Smoking. Apparently smoking is highly correlated with Bladder and Kidney Cancers.
I am no Dr. nor an expert on vaps, but after going through this surgery for the second time in two years I can't imagine putting anything other than oxygen in your lungs isn't good for you. Just my experience,.... Can't wait to get back on the water...plus there's always edibles :)

I'm not an advocate of nicotine products but have done a bit of research concerning the safety of vaping and nicotine connection to cancer and there is no link. Nicotine is highly addictive but is about as bad for you as a cup of coffee (which I believe is just as addictive). The carcinogens and tar in tobacco products is where health problems come from. One study actually showed that breathing in the water vapor actually had an affect on the lungs similar to sitting in a room with a humidifier

Ha, sounds like you need a waterproof mod.

I quit smoking cigs after 20 years. 2 pack's a day then cold turkey. no patch or gum or other crap. just don't do it any more and you wont have to worry about it.

I leave my mods at home, but take a cheap ego twist 1300mah battery and a tank. My go to on the water tank is a Kanger Protank Aero, its a dual coil 2.0ohm head. It's nowhere near the quality of a sub ohm build but still produces enough vape for a solid hit. It will do the job just fine on the water keeping you away from analogs. I just throw it in a pfd pocket and haven't had any issue with occasional water splashing/exposure.

You bring up an interesting topic. I too quit smoking many years ago. I really used to enjoy smoking. Dare I say, I also enjoyed a bit of the Medicinal, but due to my line of work, I gave that up 15 years ago. I smoke about 4 - 6 cigars a year, but even that to me is a guilty pleasure.

What I'm trying to say is, you gotta have joy in your life! Fast forward to the vape. I have taken to buying the ePens and have recently started enjoying one on the kayak. It's been really cool because it's fun and I don't feel like it's bad to do healthwise anyway. I am fascinated by this vaping! I would really like to try the proper set up. Any suggestions? As far as the Medicinal... I can't wait to retire!

Dangit this thread just cost me $50!

Tried a disposable ecig just 2 days ago, saw this thread today and had to stop at the vapor shop on the way home. Got a ego lcd battery and evod tank, spare atomizer, charger, and a couple of bottles of eliquid. Wake and vape, delicious coffee :p I think I might have found a new hobby I didn't know I wanted. I already need some more tanks to quickly swap flavors now!

For an entry level mod you can get a k100 kit for right around 60 bucks. You can get an igo-w rebuildable atomizer for about 20. That should get you started out

For me, I miss smoking most while fishing. But, I too vape now and found a setup that works for me while fishing. I use a eGo-T upgrade at 3.7v and an 1.8ohm Evod on a lanyard. 36mg liquid means I don't have to hit it too frequently. I'm down to 6mg for my regular usage though. It gets water on it here and there and keeps working.

I've tried subohm and didn't like it. I have an Igo L and W, but don't use them much. Too fiddly for my liking. I just want my nicotine with good vapor, so a carto tank on my Provari or MVP 2 gets the job done. I have one particular juice I like in the Evod too.

If you guys haven't found it yet, check out ECF (http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/).

I have a buddy who quit smoking all together with the vape thing. He was smoking for a couple years and it took him a few months but he quit. It still looks kinda funny to me walking around a store and seeing a cloud come up but he swears by it and I trust the guy. Good luck Will! :cheers1:

I thought it originally started as a way to quit smoking then became something of a 420 thing, but it's my understanding it's now something anyone can do. Someone compared it to hookah, is this accurate? I was unaware of flavors or that you could smoke it without nicotine or "special herbs." I feel like I'm missing the big picture here.....?

Yes, e-cigs started as a way to quit smoking and then the other came in. There are thousands of flavors out there and you don't have to get them with nicotine. I'm working my way there now. I'm down to 6mg from 24-36mg.

Yea all these flavors are a lot for a newbie to pick from. Any good suggestions on regular tobacco flavors and maybe a few good other flavors as well? Some sound good and may taste good for a bit but I'm not sure if you can handle the flavor for a full day or more let alone a full bottle. Also, what's the best way to change flavors often, get a drip tip or just have multiple tanks?

Finding your go to flavors is the hardest part of vaping for sure. Go to E-cig City Mission Viejo (27500 Marguerite Parkway #2) and taste a bunch of flavors. I've moved away from tobaccos, so I can't really help you there. I prefer non-tobacco menthols myself. I like Mount Baker Vapor's Extreme Ice, Orange Ice, and Thug Juice. From E-cig City I get Dura Smoke's Classic Menthol and Blueberry Chill.

For testing flavors I use a 306 dripping atomizer. For flavors I don't vape often I use my Igo L or Igo W. For my 4 main flavors I use 3 different carto tanks and an Evod. The Igo (or similar Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer) is nice because you can wrap your coil and use cotton for the wick. When you want to change flavors you just change out the cotton. But, RDAs take some patience and practice and aren't for everyone.

For newbies I personally recommend Evods ($5 or $6) on a Twist or MVP. Evods are cheap, so having multiple flavors going isn't going to break the bank, they have pretty good vapor and taste (for what they are), and the coils are replaceable (about $1.50). I love carto tanks, but they have a bit of a learning curve to them. Plus, it's not worth buying a cheap one. A good glass one is going to run about $30. The Igo is a great place to start with rebuildables as they only cost about $15 and are easy to setup. But, again there's a learning curve to them.

Alan if we ever meet up ive got a couple 30ml bottles of some natural tobacco flavors that I grew out of in 18mg. Tribeca and prime from halo ejuice. They are good. I've just cut down to 6mg nicotine so they are too strong for me

Thanks for the info Ed, your recommendations will save me a few bucks in experimenting. I'll check out that vape shop for sure.

Will, thanks for the offer but I think I already made a mistake in getting 18mg bottles. The stuff is giving me a little buzz. I think I'm going to take the unopened one back and get some 6mg instead. Save the 18s for on the water when you only have time for a few draws. I don't need to get high on nic :sifone:

I'm going to take this thing on the yak this weekend, it'll be nice not having to use a lighter in the wind.

I'll pass them off to someone. The thing with mechanical mods and building sub ohm coils is that you get such fat rips and at such low resistence that anything stronger then 6mg is too much.

I don't. my best friend does he has been smoke free for quite some time now. He has gone thru a Sh!t load of different mods, carto's, drips, tanks, and juices. current set up is a Reo Grand. he had a woodvil but sold it. when I saw it I almost considered it just because of the craftsmanship, but then recalled the fact that with all the $$ he has spent getting to that point I could have bought some nice reels and had some custom rods built.

we have been fishing PV pretty hard for the last few weekends, standard 2-5 # calicos, that morning we had two mystery fish one snapped the 65# braid on me 10 mins later buddy got spooled for about 50 yards then snapped as well both were set up with 5/0 circle hooks and whole squid we about 20 yards off of the kelp line off of the point.
