Some of the video I took at La Jolla at the rockfish derby. Didn't catch all the wipeouts...cameras pointed in the wrong direction at the wrong person...ow' well, at least I caught jorges wipeout!

That video was awesome. Great editing. I kept saying the same thing did he launch yet. Was that Mr. Patrick monitoring the surf? I could tell during the video some of those coming in were going to eat it, but the video cut away. So thanks for finally showing them at the end. Like Jorge, he would have been good if he just leaned his paddle and body into the wave as it hit him. It was so much fun to watch. I just wish I could have made it to the tourney. In about 3 week I hope to be well enough from the foot surgery to be back out in my X Factor. I sure do miss La Jolla!

That was great.

Yeah, it looked challenging, and some showed some pro skills landing. It was really funny when cutting back to the one waiting and hearing the elevator music - reminded me of the 405 movie - I probably would have been doing the same, and flipped on the return. But if he was out a bit further, then sat down on his kayak at the right time, he may have been ok.

If that is bad surf to launch in, I don't feel too intimidated of it anymore. And am I the only one who waits for the sets on the outside, then paddle my a## off so that I stay in between the waves the whole way in? I have biffed it too many times back in the day by riding the wave.

To me that is the way to do it.

Patience.

Or go in backwards so your bow is always pointing at a right angle to the surf.

Mrpatrick said "I hate getting wet" That's like a duck saying, I hate getting my feet wet :D

When you launch off La Jolla on a kayak 90% of the time your gonna get wet. Kayak=wet.

Jorge, what went wrong ? Looks like you had the landing. Rudder issues?

I've come to learn, when Tony's got his camera "on" just scoot in behind him and stay out of the way. He's not looking to film anything good or fun...he's looking to trash you big time if he could. All in good fun. Great stuff Tony!
MrPatrick, it was your turn this time around. Besides, the entire story never gets told so what can you do...we ended up having a better time on the beach with you there hanging with us:cheers1: !

And uh, Jorge, that wasn't even a wave, more like a ripple...

as Andy (i think) said in another thread.... i was kinda surprised at how many people opted to launch/land in the surf instead of staying dry and launching/landing south of avenida del playa

Its funny how so many people think that moving farther south by a few hundred yards is a huge difference in surf then the new launch. There really is no difference, I scope it out every time and it is the same waves, height, frequency, etc. There is no point to drag your yak down the beach for no real difference. On the same note if you were to launch north of the new launch area (which you are not supposed to do anyways) then there is a significant difference in wave height. Last time I went out I had a dude yelling at me "move south" for a minute or two and just south of me the waves were the same as where I was at.

good stuff, loved the elevator music :D tight interval is the worst! Rather have it twice the height at 16 seconds!

Chuck,

not as obvious on those 7 second wind swell days, but still less energy at the launch because of the canyon head eating it up. With Ground swell it is very obvious, love this photo of Brad back on Big Wednesday. There were 12-15 foot waves being ridden past the Cove and he came in with out surfing a wave. Wish I had a better shot of this one.

dudes were landing at shores where the longboard crew surfs. GIGANTIC difference with any trace of swell.
