Soaked 1 bait in 2 days, and fished for treasure the other 11 hours. Turns out the first and last couple minutes of each day provided the only entertainment. Although I did snag the weirdest looking creature I have seen recently (no pics though). Got to play in some moderate surf with short intervals on Sun.

Great video... I think I'll try coming in nose-first even if the surf is a little bigger - the last time I tried the "come-in backwards" technique it didn't end so well.
Do you just lean into it?

wow.. that's a perfect text book lean-in the surf. thanks for sharing.
Just curious, How do you position your paddle when do lean and dig your paddle in. Is it perpendicular to surface to slow down the boat so you don't surf in front of the wave then flip?
Nice Benihana @ 2:34 seconds!

The first thing i do is to try to get some momentum in and pointed in the direction i want to slide. Then it is all about the lean. The hard part is convincing yourself to commit to the lean cause it is counterintuitive. You may lean with your paddle and upper body at first, but shift your butt or hips the other way to compensate (don't compensate). You will be amazed at how much you can lean on your flattened out paddle blade. On larger waves you can actually start bouncing down the face which can be nerve racking, but do not give up on the lean and you will stay on top. As the wave passes by or peters out you can slowly lean less. On Sun the kayak guides were out practicing in the surf. These guys are out on a daily basis and were loving the experience of practicing in the surf. Everyone should try it at least a few times. It is much more fun than fishing much of the time.
Good job Greg, I also found my self leaning hard left in my office chair.
Almost fell out of my chair
Great stuff!!! :luxhello: :kayak-surfer:

Just another little note: You can ride up the sand by leaning into a shore break coming down on you while you are beached . It can beat those times you jump out trying not to get pummeled, only to find that your legs are not working yet. Or worse jump out on the wrong side of your yak and get pummeled by it.

It is parallel to the surface, and used as if you were placing it on a dock to lean over and look in the water. The wave is naturally going to tend to tip your sideways kayak towards the low side. And as it is breaking, it is going to tend to roll it over. The purpose of the lean is to counteract that by forcing the kayak to slide down the face sideways. Thanks for making me think about that, cause it brings up some other questions I will have to look into. Like: Does a lighter person and gear need to lean less cause they are easier to move sideways? Hmmmmm

Just make sure you guys all realize that your kayak needs to have water going completely under it when side washing or you will catch an edge and eat it harder than coming straight in. Think of it like a snowboard. When I had my outback it was a little easier to slide in sideways but you really need to commit to leaning into the wave.
Nice video Greg! The master at work!!
