View Full Version : Fish-Porn-Friday.
THE DARKHORSE
05-30-2014, 10:50 PM
Hey there boys and girls. It feels like ages since I last checked in; Christmas if memory serves. Been spending way too much time in the office. And feeling a bit overdue. The coolest part of having an office on the water, though? The view, of course, so no complaints. Beyond that, an integral part of tracking fish daily for clients is, well, catching them. Duh. So, sometimes you have to actually grind on fish yourself. You know, just so they believe that the fish are really there? In essence, if I see fish on the meter, be damn sure that I'm dropping an iron, too.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF2036.JPG
Before you go and ponder taking a heavy pay-cut and changing careers, though, just realize the perks pretty much end right about there. Catching fish until your arms can't possibly reel in another -- while that in itself is what we all dream of -- quickly transcends from a short-sided goal, to, well, work. Thus my decision these days to spend less and less time on the fishing rod. And more time behind the camera.
Bringing me to the entire point of this post. A client recently asked: "What in the hell do you do with all the photos?!?! While I sat and pondered that for a moment in silence. I eventually came to the conclusion that I really didn't have a good answer. Quite frankly, if I'm being completely honest, the answer to that question kind of sucked. The truth is that an incredible amount of what may be deemed stoke worthy (for at least someone out there in web-land) images? Never see the light of day.
Thus, fish-porn-Friday, being born. A thread that I plan to update often. In an attempt to share the stoke -- revolving in and around the trophy fish we pursue. Will this be a: "I caught this fish off of live-Squid four hundred yards inside The Half at, grey-light, forty five feet under a balloon? Far from. However, if you're simply looking for some inspiration-in-a-can, so to speak. You know, something to fuel your fire for that next adventure? Or, simply give your morning coffee that extra bit of pep -- then you've certainly come to the right place. Sit back, relax, take your shoes off and enjoy. Because there's more where this came from...
The only thing cooler than pulling on a thirty pound plus, Yellowtail, on a ten foot jig-stick?
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF1963.JPG
Having someone capture an undeniably, epic-photo, of your first giant Yellowtail on said long rod.
Remember, though, for every epic photo you see? I was probably slaving away in the office the day prior.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF1999.JPG
And I'll be completely honest here. This fish completely kicked my ass -- practically made me his bitch. Seriously.
Thankfully, I didn't catch this fish. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy, though. I was happy behind the lens.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF2066.JPG
I know I know, a fish is a fish. But some are prettier than others; for sure.
Then there's this guy. A highly skilled angler in the making -- with a new sonar every time I see him.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF1971.JPG
I had his unit perfectly tuned on this day. Our images looked like a carbon copy of one another.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF1974.JPG
Tony was on fire this day, too. While I gladly watched from a few feet away. Fun day on the pond; for sure.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF1991.JPG
Same day from a different perspective. Not another angler for miles. Just the way I like it...
One of the best parts of my job is meeting cool people, from all walks of life. Most have a long drive, too.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF2051.JPG
Which only adds to the tea-kettle of pressure already on my shoulders, of course. The Ocean is, um, BIG.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF2080.JPG
What's even more kick ass, though, is when I have a pro in their own right along for the day.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF2075.JPG
Make sure and take note of the trophy resting on it's side already. This gentlemen whacked them all day.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF2083.JPG
That is until he had a $1 part break -- and now had a million dollar problem. Paddling a Hobie Pro Angler, loaded down with multiple fish, already drained from the beating sun. For the next four hours; ouch.
I'm really going to miss this guy. The military recently sent him back East.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF2144.JPG
An absolute pleasure to fish with and would of made a great kayak model. Always had a smile on his face.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2153.JPG
This next photo is one of my favorites, though. Namely due to the composition of the contrasts depicted.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2149.JPG
Let's see: standing shoulder to shoulder with eighty other guys who can't figure out how to control their line, having horrible odds to begin with, then in the unlikely event the unthinkable happens -- you actually hook the right kind? There's incredible odds that you're going to be tangled in one of those eighty lines; if not all of them. Or, Tim, here being pinned to the rail on his first ever surface-iron Yellowtail. Your choice.
Eventually I had the pleasure of fishing with this gentlemen again. His $800 set-ups make me sick. That's just jealousy talking, though.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF2135.JPG
This day he was the perfect muse for the Bendo shot of Bendo shots. He's, literally, flying past me here. An action shot that I'm proud of, today.
Anyway, I suppose that's enough for now -- some of us have jobs and actually have to go to work in the morning. :D

Nice photos.
I know what you mean about making a living at a "Hobby" as I have been a professional large format nature photographer for 30 plus years.
Business was so good during the recession that I had to open up a second business on ebay in another "Hobby", LOL.
Now as a "Hobby", I kayak fish. Altho I do not make money doing this hobby, I do bring home more than enough in super fresh seafood that pays for the hobby.

Thanks for the feedback, gentlemen. While I'd be suprised if this thread doesn't, I don't know, eventually turn into some silly internet-pissing-match? A practical guarantee these days from my observations on the sidelines. Being somewhat doomed from the get go and destined to be either, closed. Or, worse, a public opportunity for the, catty types, to do, well, what they do best. I really appreciate the good vibes thus far.
Along the same lines, allow me to take this opportunity to say thanks, for the posative feedback via private messages and e-mail. Without the likes of you and everyone who's already replied? I wouldn't bother. While it should go without saying -- if you try to please everyone? Rest assured, you'll end up pleasing no one. That's not advice by the way. Just the facts.
Anyway, as promised, here's your next instalment of inspiration in a can. So to speak. Photos that will either fuel your rage to toss your silly computer into the fire. Write some silly back-handed compliment -- spewing hatred toward the internet and all who participate. Or, God forbid, get off your a$$ and go fishing. Entirely your choice, of course; as I don't have a horse in that race.
Also, hold off (if you can), in regards to not all of the previous photos being caught the day prior to my last post. As this thread continues, rest assured, the photos will become more and more current. While I had intentions of uploading a boat load of photos? My Mac had crashed the same day. True story. Relegating me to write last week's post on an, I-Pad. You know, hunting and picking, as I type with one finger? So, some photos here will complete the teaser images you might have noticed last week.
Like this session as an example. Yeah yeah, another silly bendo-shot -- what's he hooked on the bottom -- kelp -- the Loch Ness Monster?
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF1962.JPG
Yeah, it pretty much feels like you hooked the bottom. Until you realize that you're flying off into the sunset. With line smoking off the reel and some guy screaming to turn the damn handle.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/photo-37.JPG
Followed by the realization that a Hobie Outback lacks proper fish storage. A good problem to have if you asked me.
Excellent photos Josh! Love the idea of "Fish-Porn-Friday"... look forward to seeing more...

Thanks for the kind words. And don't you worry. La Jolla and I aren't going anywhere. Whether it's this season or next is entirely up to you. Rest assured, it would be wise to heal up completely before we hit the water. Because injury or no injury? If the trip goes my way you'll be crying, for sure, by day's end. The good kind of pain, of course.
While it's always hard to tell true size in a fish photo. This specimen had a fifty inch fork length and was easily forty five pounds. A true beast. One of two for the lucky fellow on this blessed day.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2127.JPG
The only thing cooler than pulling on fish by yourself? Easy. Pulling on fish with one of your fishing buddies who came along with you.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF2088.JPG
And if your fishing partner for the day catches a second prize. What else is there to do, really.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2102.JPG
A little healthy competition never hurt anyone if you asked me. Besides, you could always arm-wrestle to see who drives back. Or fight on the beach upon landing. I'm guessing beers all around, though, in this case.
Some kook with a forty-four pound Yellowtail. I heard him crying about his arm after the fight. Sissy.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF1951.JPG
I don't know who the hell he is, but he's always on the water -- and on my spots.
Well color me inspired! Beautiful shots there Josh.
Thanks, mate. Strangely enough I was headed your way the day of your untimely distress (the sinking battle-ship). As I noticed a kayak in the distance looking a bit strange, going full throttle, I also noticed the boat pull up alongside. Then head off; to turn right back again. Here's a photo from the crazy-windy-day you witnessed first-hand.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF2318.JPG
Certainly not a good day for a leak on a kayak; as you can attest. Shit happens. Your time (when everything falls into place) will come soon enough.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/IMG_0288_1_1.jpg
The Pacific Ocean isn't going anywhere. Little boats in big wind just don't mix that well. And a fish, or three, just isn't worth it.
Oh yeah, then there's these things. I know they're beautiful to look at, but are they good to eat? Ask this guy. Boom -- the shot heard around the world. Why everyone loses their mind over White Sea Bass every season is beyond me.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/Photo_Jan_02_10_21_17_PM.jpg
While it's hard to call a guy who stands, six foot six inches tall, a kid. I certainly wouldn't anyway. Nevermind the fact that he'd make you look like a fool on the Tennis court.
I can say with confidence that this, um, kid would fish circles around 99.9% of the members of this board -- all by himself. Guaranteed.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2025.JPG
So take a good look at the future. And, good luck beating his White Sea Bass if you're in WCW this year.
Then there was this one day. At band camp...
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0568-2.JPG
Where I finally found the one I'd been looking for. Seriously, though, If you don't already free-dive? It's probably too late to start. Trust me, they're not worth drowning for. If you think kayak fishing is dangerous -- you have no idea.
Here's my friend, Dylan, who just got out of the Army -- with his cherry popper.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0456.JPG
I felt bad after taking him diving on this occasion. Since this day pictured, he's about as frothed-out as anyone of my clients suffering from ghost fever at the moment. Wet dreams. Nightmares. You name it. Sorry, guys; don't blame me -- blame the damn fish!
I might as well address the fact that none one of these White Sea Bass were caught at La Jolla. Not one; God as my witness. So before a mass of folks load up on gas and head South? I'll give you a big 'ol hint.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF2281.JPG
Find one of these Pelicans and they'll lead you to the promise land. Strangely enough, all the kayakers I noticed in this area only target Halibut off the beach. Or, Calico Bass, with ultra-light trout gear. To each his own I suppose. But, around this breakwall I absolutely destroyed the ghosts this season.
Oh, before anyone starts whining (whether or not it's the same two guys who always whine -- or someone else in their place). You know, about this not having a place in the fishing reports section?

Great report good pics making me want to drive down and go bendo!!!!!
Well, sometimes it is just that easy. Here's hoping your long drive ends up with the results you're after. Funny enough, I thought of you guys here recently. When asked to go and target rock-fish. My client wanted to go, North, to target Ling.
Finally had a client who actually wanted to target deep structure and rock-fish. My first time dropping on the rocks since the opener. Being that this gentlemen and I had already caught, White Sea Bass and Yellowtail, on previous trips. Rock-fish died.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/photo_2-3.jpg
A nineteen pound Lingcod made it aboard. Followed by two other legal Lings and topped it off with some Reds (Vermilion).
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/photo_1-2.JPG
Right up there with any fish in the Pacific Ocean. Fight similar to a Halibut and rank just as high on the taste meter, too.
After seeing his photos in this very thread. I got a call to meet up on the water this week again. He came prepared with all sorts of new man-toys. Namely a new boat and sonar. A very, cool-Cat, if you ever have the pleasure to fish with 'em.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0067.JPG
Anyway, fish died. As in plural. After we did so well last time the pressure was definitely on. Hard to tell in the photos, but this day had 15 mph South wind. A gross muggy, humidity filled, feeling in the air. And very few on the water -- for good reason.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0073.JPG
Not to mention, the dreaded uphill current to go along with it, heavy overcast skies and looked like it was going to rain. Actually felt a couple drops here and there. A far cry from the beautiful weather our last time out. Honestly, couldn't have looked much worse for targeting, Yellowtail. The fish had moved from where they'd been for weeks. Just adding to the pressure. And this particular day, quite frankly, completely sucked for the most part.
Until I ran over this beautiful sight on the meter. I get hundreds of e-mails each year regarding which sonar to purchase.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0091.JPG
From boat and kayak owners alike. I'm often asked what's the price of a good unit and how much should they plan on spending. My answer to that question, while I absolutely can't stand people who answer a question with a question: "Well, how much is your time worth?" After that question is answered the real discussion can begin.
On, Wednesday, I came across what looked like a free-swimming Halibut over the canyon.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0096.JPG
Turned out to be a, Turtle. I took it as a good sign, though, and went on about my business after he came over to say hello.
The beneficiary of said, good luck, Turtle.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0099.JPG
Also, if you're ever lucky enough to meet this guy? Make sure and buy him a beer -- he's got some amazing stories to tell.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0103.JPG
Seriously. A great American and outstanding angler in the making. He did rescue efforts during Hurricane Katrina. And, easily, one of the coolest guys I've ever met. Could probably snap your arm like a twig. Yet, one of the nicest guys on the planet.
You want to hear something crazy, though. I met this gentlemen and he wanted nothing to do with Yellowtail. Nor, White Sea Bass. I told him exactly what I've been catching and he wanted no part of it. Just a relaxing day on the water was all.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0053.JPG
So, yours truly actually got to pay a visit to Mission Bay. Been way, way, way too long for me. But, had a blast!
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0059.JPG
On his first ever trip to, San Diego, on the last day before boarding a plane? He nails a ten pound class, Halibut, for his first fish. His grandson caught a couple nice, Spotted Bay Bass. I ended up with a nice Halibut myself and had a blast with the spotties, too. For the first time in months actually got home early and didn't end up at the ice-house by day's end.
Then, of course, the very next day I'm right back grinding away on a pick-bite in pursuit of larger game. Fun, yes, but very hard work at the same time. A very successful week, no doubt. But, a lot of hard work in heavy winds to go along with it. Anyway, only two weeks in and I'm already slipping on my Fish-Porn-Friday updates. I just got back from the Coronado Islands and am about to get on another boat, headed up North, to target more White Sea Bass. I'll do my best to update this thread on time in the future. Here's wishing a happy father's day to all; maybe a couple photos of fish will brighten your day that much more. Or not. Until next time...

My pleasure, Ramos. Likewise. I'm sure we all appreciate when someone like yourself shares their captures. Whether it's from down the street. Or, in your case, a world a way. Any idea how far you're located from, Peniche? Portugal is somewhere I'd love to visit. Maybe even relocate all together.
Thanks for your patience there, folks. I have been known to be, I don't know, fashionably late? And whether we're talking about updating a weekly thread -- or catching trophy fish for that matter -- it's all about one thing. Consistency. For some, it's all about being early to bed. For others, who may choose late to rise. Whatever routine you find yourself in? While I may not be your first choice for advice. Just make the most of it...
Right about the time I put up my last update. Computer-time was at an all time low. For you guys who follow the moon rise times, tides, currents, etc.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2365.JPG
Well, you're not alone. Bar graphs and weather predictions aside, though, there's many pieces to that puzzle. Or else it would be easy...
Said, relatively spectacular, moon rise -- alright already, it's June for crying out loud -- a La Jolla, White Sea Bass.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2380.JPG
They're not always this cool, fish or no fish. Some are better than others, though, and in years past I wouldn't have even snapped a pic.
As is often the case. Quickly the colors completely changed. Making the first photo that much more special to me.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2381.JPG
Also notice the bright hue of the sunlight setting behind me. Throwing hot pink rays and reflecting off the moon. 'Twas magic for a moment.
If you were on the water this week, you might have heard some guy, screaming bloody-murder. I was currently with a client at the time. And leaned over to ask him if he heard the screaming, too. We discussed if it was someone in distress, perhaps they saw a Great White Shark, were sinking, or worse? We quickly realized it was the screams of joy from a mile away, though -- and I then told my client it must be none other than, Bert Vega. A no-nonsense, hardcore angler, who's not too proud to celebrate. A man's man who will catch fish until he's sore this season.
I was just lucky in this case to have an opportunity to capture, pure unadulterated joy. You can fake a lot of things -- stoke isn't one of them.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2402.JPG
One of the longest, leanest, Yellowtail that I've ever seen. Definitely not a local fish. Could have easily been over forty pounds had she been eating right. Regardless, a beautiful trophy fish that any man alive would be proud to catch. And no doubt put up an incredible fight.
This was a special fish for both of us. Since I've had an opportunity to start mentoring, Bert, lately -- enter proud Papa moment indeed. That said, we've had no problems getting on the fish when our schedules aligned. Here he is going toe-to-toe on an absolute giant of a, White Sea Bass. Estimated somewhere between sixty and eighty pounds. Yes, we saw her, and she flicked us our hook back right at the boat. I'm pretty sure that both of us cried after a few choice words were screamed to the heavens.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2295.JPG
What's that saying: a day on the water is better than any day at work -- I gonna have to call bullshit. This was a sad trip back to the launch. :D
Somewhat similar, our most recent trip didn't exactly have a happy ending. The analogy I often use, especially if the client is in the construction industry? Imagine if you spent an incredible amount of time building this amazing, stunning even, beautiful house made of glass -- then a piece of $h!t, five hundred pound Sea Lion, comes flying out of the elevator you built and lands on it!
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0052.JPG
That's my job in a nutshell. As if getting each client on fish isn't hard enough. Our hopes and dreams are attached to a tiny piece of thread. Between guys who simply refuse to turn the handle, to spastically winding all the line onto the spool (on one side) until it comes to a grinding halt -- and snaps -- to trophy fish that smoke you into structure for a living themselves. Or, just filthy, thieving, overpopulated Sea Lions. My next job? Will have absolutely nothing to do with building beautiful glass houses. Guaranteed.
Here's another repeat client from over the years who recently made it back in the pipeline. Like many, he's since moved on to smaller boats and wanted a refresher course. Yes, for me anyway, I approach each target species differently from apposing vessels. A boat is not a kayak and vice versa.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2357.JPG
This lucky angler had already got smoked by a large, White Sea Bass, one day with me prior. Caught a very large, Yellowtail,
off a kayak our last trip out. And on this day? We left them biting full speed...
After that trip, I had another opportunity to put an angler on his first ever Yellowtail. No sport boat background and no big water experience to speak of.
Anyway, after lots of instruction starting from the beginning, eventually we ended up here. The fun/not sofun part of the trip.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2385.JPG
Not to be confused with work or anything. But rest assured, Mike, here is certainly doin' work!
What's that saying: "big boat equals big fish"? Something like that anyway. My third client in a row, on a tandem, to bring home the bacon.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2383.JPG
Just look at all the fish storage possibilities...
At least on the ride back that pounding hull quiets down, right?
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2390.JPG
Bacon. It's what's for dinner. Complimentary, happy-ending, by trophy fish who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Alright, I suppose that's enough for now. Most guys penis is longer than their attention span. So, regardless of how well endowed, one's focus tends to wander after a certain allotment of time. Myself included. Whether you're a thrill seeking junkie. Or, easily bored?
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0723.JPG
Might I suggest diving in terrifying conditions to begin with. Getting buzzed by some absolutely, ginormous, dark figure from below -- that I know was not a Sea Lion. Then, beyond what every pore in your body is telling you to do? Keep making drops to the bottom until you find the dark figure you came for.

In lieu of the, Bloodydecks Yellowtail Shoot out, where many fuel crazed pedal-to-the-metal enthusiasts would gladly run each and everyone of you (kayak anglers) down -- if a bird so much as flaps his wing. Or farts? This week will be dedicated to the sometimes elusive/really not so elusive trophy fish: the ghost. Which to many is appropriately named. To others though, White Sea Bass, are just another fish. If when this weekly update finds you in the former category? Just know that one day, when you find yourself in the latter group, you'll look back at this part-time infatuation with an overgrown silver fish and laugh. Hopefully.
Regardless, until then, just know that there's no shortage of them these days. And as long as you continue to look both ways before crossing the street -- you'll have the rest of your life to catch them. Unless, of course, my prediction rings true. And they shut down the entire California Coast to recreational fishing. Making a huge marine-park, if you will, and selling the aqua-farmed resource back to us all at a premium. At which point I'll be living off some tropical island with many reef break options. And looking back at all these photos with a grin.
When I took this photo I certainly had a smile from ear to ear. Fish were all over the place on this occasion. Making my job a hell of a lot easier.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2190.JPG
Quite the luxury to just be able to take a photo instead of freaking out about having to get lines down. Fish on deck already? Helps.
Let's see. Hammering them off of Dana Point. Hammering them off of La Jolla. Hammering them South of there as well (pictured here).
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF2303.JPG
Bringing me to my original point in the second paragraph. They're not as elusive as many make them out to be. Also, check the wave height in this photo. This day was huge! When the Pacific Ocean gives you lemons -- make lemonade.
To this day, one of the scariest things to ever happen to me? Was being buzzed in deep water (well outside the kelp) by a, White Sea Bass. Not just any fish, though. I'm talking about what could have been a hundred pounder! Just diving some birds in open water. Looked like a school of, Yellowtail, was breezing through or something. Birds on Sardines. Sardines on Krill with millions of, Pacific Greenback Mackerel, thrown in for good measure. Then, up from the depths shoots the largest ghost I've ever seen that hammers a Sardine. I know, I know, who cares? It was a couple feet from my face...
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/FILE0363.JPG
No picture of the, White Sea Bass, but I got a pretty cool image of the Krill.
Said frightened diver. What a kook. Another photo that I'll probably look back on (years from now) with a smile, though.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/FILE0373.JPG
Especially, if and when I do the unthinkable -- and get a real job.
Diving is very similar to hook and line angling. In many ways, actually. Case in point: Sometimes you target say, Halibut?
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0045.JPG
And get a big surprise. Honestly, I really don't know who was more taken aback on this day. Scouring the bottom looking for eyes and chins. Then out of absolutely nowhere, holy $hit! Check out the filthy visibility and sandy bottom here.
More deep water schools on the fin-bait. Don't get it twisted a trophy, White Sea Bass, will kick your ass.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF2166.JPG
If and when the damn things aren't in the kelp? Music to my ears and all. But the damn things will put up a tussle.
On one of my last updates I mentioned heading out on a boat for more, elusive fish, action. Eight boats, all five hundred yards apart -- unheard of in this day and age.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF2422.JPG
Proving yet again that ice can indeed get expensive. And, White Sea Bass, are only elusive if you let them be.
What's that saying: Find the bait. Find the fish? Something like that anyway. I heard, Yellowtail, eat these things as well. No?
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/sea_bass_049.JPG
And just another reason to not fish in La Jolla this weekend. Bloodydecks,Yellowtail shoot-out, aside.
Lastly, to make this a hot off the press report. Might as well put up a photo taken in the last few days.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0136.JPG
By all means get out there and try to tangle with one. Just not this one specifically -- unless you plan on fishing in my ice-chest.
My suggestion would be to consider giving those poor, Yellowtail, a rest. Go poke around a few new-to-you places. Anyway, that's probably enough for now in regards to this weekly update. For more inspiration-in-a-can? You might consider stopping on by this thread for a sip next week. Or not.
I'll be on a couple boats the next few days. And in saying that. If a Bird so much as flaps his wing -- or farts? Don't say I didn't warn you...:cheers1:

I think the title of this week's update really sums it up. The entire Southern California Coast (and points beyond) lit up and rose to nothing short of white-hot levels. Everything from wide-open (larger grade) Bluefin Tuna well to the South. Huge spots of Yellowfin Tuna mixed in between and hanging off kelps, in and around Dolphin schools, etc. To some Coastal Squid nests up North continuing to do their thing. Local paddy action with the usual suspects underneath, you name it, a blind-Monkey could have caught fish the last couple of weeks.
Even the resurgence of rat-Yellowtail and the Bonita to go along with it. I'm sure many local anglers got a chance to call in sick the last fourteen days to go fishing. And some of us poor souls who actually fish for a living -- the opportunity to take a day off? Would rank right up there with escaping from North Korea! Just day after relentless day of getting burnt to a crisp under the ever present sun. By the time I got to say farewell after packing fish in ice each day? The next thing I know that damn alarm clock was going off again. And repeat.
Thus, Fish Porn Friday, taking a back seat due to computer time. Or lack there of coming to a grinding halt. Sorry about that; it just is what it is. After I missed my first update I thought about just throwing up a slew of photos from the week. But the truth is every photo comes with a story attached. And who's going to say what guy's story doesn't matter? Certainly not I. So, out of respect for these fish and the stories to go along with them. Late once again, behind on the updates, holding out on the goods, etc -- guilty as charged.
Great read and photos, man :cheers1:
Really great to meet you, brother. And thanks for all the positive feedback; seriously. That time you're accruing on the water will add up and the dividends will follow.
Josh did mention he may not be timely with his Friday contributions but I sure missed last weeks "Fish Porn Friday". Must be field research..
Pretty much nailed it on the head, brother. Field research, capitalize with clients based off of said notes from the field, more research and more domination of local patterns. This, Jeff, guy really knows what's up!
David Attenborough accent: "The deadly spear wielding darkhorse stalks it's prey, presently unaware of the large observers below. In the unlikely event that he is unable to ambush an unsuspecting fish, he uses is bristly whiskers to filter krill from the ocean, thus supplementing his voracious appetite."
Dude how the hell do you dive with that fat handlebar stash!?! These are his true secrets which will remain shrouded in legend. :)
With every picture, another series of questions. Love the thread Josh keep it up!
Deadly is right, Chris. Catch and release is one thing, but spear and release is another. My new gun is so powerful that fish just roll over and die upon sight. No need to even fire the thing. When I miss fish with it? They just look at me like: Holy shit -- what in the hell was that! You still diving? :D
In regards to the mask, I was told early on by a true hardcore diver (not an impostor like myself) that I had two options. Mind you this guy looked like Tom Hanks from the movie, Castaway. He said I could either keep it shaved like a babies bottom or just grow a gnarly beard. Apparently the gnarlier the better. Being that I haven't shaved with a razor for years? I opted for the latter, of course.
Anyway, with no further ado. Here's a few photos that just might have never seen the light of day. Prior to this thread that is. If they make you giggle a bit, want to wear camouflaged leotards and play water Polo whilst wielding a big stick, pack your crap and go fishing -- or puke? Is entirely up to you.
The only thing cooler than catching an eight pound Calico Bass? Watching your seven year old son, Bennet, here catching one all by himself. This man-child can already free dive down to twenty feet. I was watching him in the surf (on a boogie board mind you) during fourth of July celebrations. He freaking catches a wave -- stands up on it and does a three sixty! Hardcore watermen in the making; guaranteed. And inspirational to see for yourself. I was inspired anyway. Then he absolutely destroyed me at some spearfishing game (Freediving Hunter) on his I-Pad.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/IMG_0062.JPG
This fish was a monster. By the rod tip I thought he got hammered by a large Sheephead (as we were dropping to the bottom). Then up comes a trophy Calico Bass. A fish any guy'd be happy to tackle. Much less at seven years old. Released...
Just taking more notes from the field in an attempt to stay on top of moving schools. If the damn things just stayed in one spot...
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/delete.JPG
Might as well make sure the drags are continuing to work in a smooth fashion. Knots are tied to properly, perfect technique, etc -- so I hear practice makes perfect.
Even got a chance to hop in the water for a minute or two since my last update. The closest thing to shooting fish in a barrel...
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0154.JPG
Probably the biggest challenge? Beyond, not getting wrapped in one's reel line and drowning, of course. Finding a damn paddy in a dessert of nothingness.
In and amongst the selfishness of going swimming for a few? Southern California was blessed with one of the best South swells in years. It just didn't hit San Diego proper with a touch of East in it's heading. Luckily, I lost my wallet a month ago off Dana Point! So, why not kill two birds with one stone and hit Lower Trestles on the way back (during said swell)? Which turned out to be a wise plan when I arrived. With solid double-overhead, freight train, corduroy lines to the horizon. No joke or exaggeration here. I'm talking twenty wave sets with about a two minute lull. So not exactly your typical b.s. Southern California South swell. To top it off? Only sixty guys out at one of the most user friendly waves on the planet. A lot of wash through sets as it was borderline too big for the place. But pretty much more waves than people -- something that never happens at Lowers.
Luckily I happen to know this guy. One of said San Clemente rulers who I had an opportunity to fish with.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/670/DSCF2241.JPG
Super cool cat who works for Volcom. Regular foot destroyer who throws buckets of spray to the moon. And he kicked this fish's ass, too.
More research and development from right down the street. And another hardcore angler in the making...
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2367.JPG
Beyond the smoking spool of this fish. This gentlemen got to experience what I'd prefer to never again: pulling as hard as one can on kelp!
Had a very rare opportunity in between work sessions one day. Even more rare was this quick influx of clean water. It just morphed from crap, man this is scary, to Disneyland in a flash! Which just never happens to me; typically the opposite actually.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0122.JPG
I mean, clear water isn't all that rare in my local haunts. I realize. It's just that I've almost never had an opportunity to shoot one of these when that happens. Apparently, God, was shining on my limited window of time on this day. One of my easiest recoveries 'ta boot. Something which I typically dread before even dawning my suit. Pretty much the closest thing to a perfect dive -- if there is such a thing.
Here's hoping each and everyone of you have that, "fall in your lap", type of day here soon. Have the giant Yellowtail dreams are made of slam your iron with that terrible 30' cast. Have that tiny paddy with no visible life upon first sight, morph into a foaming school of Tuna charging from the depths. May your sabiki-rig get hammered while making bait by a giant, White Sea Bass? Shit happens. And it might as well happen to you. As long as you keep playing the game -- eventually you're bound to get a gimme. :captain:

Story of my life apparently. Since I have to get up in four hours? The latest update is going to have to wait another day; thanks for your patience on that front. I'll go ahead and throw up a quick teaser, though. With a bit of advice attached. Also, expect a full update on this thread after my trip tomorrow. Whether or not It's a short trip or a long one? Remains to be determined.
The advice: No matter how beautiful a fish might be. Or how bad you'd like to catch said fish? It's probably not worth dyeing for. Diving for, maybe, but not if we're talking about your last breath. Believe me. I've done a lot of stupid stuff in my day. And as much as I'd love to say those days are in the past? That would be a bold faced lie. I do indeed try to keep it to a minimum, of course. But as mentioned in my previous update? Stuff happens.
Along the same lines? Allow me to apologize about the quality of this image in advance. Taking a quality photo in low light is tough. Especially under water. And if anyone ever tells you to hop in on a paddy in the dark. I don't care if it's a double-dog-dare. Or if it's the only paddy you've seen in ten hours of searching! Tell them they're stupid with a quick, yet stern, no. Strangely enough the top ten feet is still clear -- however the 3,000' below that is a complete black void.
I don't know if it's even really that stupid. Just stupid scary; trust me on this. Bad idea. Forget getting attacked by some random Shark in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

I bet it felt good to pull on something, Jeff. At this point, though, I'm on the fence about whether or not the thing you're pulling on? Is my leg. You mean to tell me. She gave you back your man-card and let you go fishing? I still can't believe you sold that perfect little boat (even for a lovely lady). Two years? Solid proof, though: it must be love.
Also. While on the subject. This is Fish Porn Friday; so no lame deck shots (of bait sized Yellowtail) please. I mean, come on, throw up a photo of a lit-up Tuna or something from that trip. That I'd love to see. Even one with fifty other guys (screaming at each other) as they're attempting to tie the world's largest knot. I'm talking full color popping off the screen. We're trying to enjoy our morning coffee before going to work here. For crying out loud. A sick bendo-shot -- something! :sifone:

In all seriousness, though, here's hoping that's just the start of a terrific season for you, brother. May your next Yellowtail be able to eat those small 'kine on deck. And your next Tuna require a two speed reel and three gaffs to land. Congrats on getting out there.
.

With no further ado, folks. Thanks for your patience on this week's update. No more deck photos with tag numbers and such. Or, old school black and white film images. Unless they come with a cool story or are just, I don't know, up there in the coolness factor. This is indeed the digital era. So remember to take a lot of pics. Somewhere in there? Even you just might capture the money-shot of all money-shots. Honestly, it doesn't even have to be a big fish to make a quality image. Or a colorful fish for that matter.
It certainly doesn't hurt, though. And while on that subject. Yesterday's trip ended up being another long day on the water.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/photo-56.jpg
Just the way I like it. If you're going to put up a deck photo -- make it a colorful one please. With a monster in hand preferably (caught yesterday).
Since this is indeed a kayak fishing forum. I'll get back on topic. First up is The Man, the myth and legend in the making: Bert Vega
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2502.JPG
I swear every time I see this guy he's got a huge smile on his face. And a bent rod. He must be getting tired of catching Yellowtail by now.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2504.JPG
On this day I saw him tossing them back in the water. Like they were nothing. When I grow up I want to be this guy. Great family man/hardcore angler with a smile on his face. Probably a good guy to have your back in a bar-fight, too.
Another lame deck photo I guess. With all kinds of product placement thrown in for good measure. Who knows, though?
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2510.JPG
Could be a cryptic clue. Shameless Lowrance plug. A big Yellowtail. I like the photo; it's my thread. Enjoy your coffee.
Don't you conservationist types worry, though. Plenty of Yellowtail are released. I do it all the time. It's nothing new either.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2515.JPG
And if I'm being completely honest, it's not all that commendable. It's not some noble deed that gets you a higher place in Heaven. As much as I'd love to think so! If that were the case, I probably wouldn't be burning for eternity with all my friends. It's simply a personal choice. If you harvest within your limits -- that's your American right to do so. If you feel otherwise? Lobby to change it. I will say this, though, from a very selfish perspective -- it feels amazing to watch them kick off strong. Especially with Yellowtail. One of the greatest joys in fishing if you asked me.
Just ask this regular client who's got to be tired of pulling on, Yellowtail, by now. Especially one's this size. He absolutely destroyed the homeguard fish all Winter long with me. Plenty of times by himself after the fact (in the cold-water-months). And he's been spanking fish (I'm talking trophy fish), every-trip, for months on end now. Yes I'm proud of him and his progress as an angler.

On this day he got to see a fifteen foot, Great White Shark, from two feet away. Yes, it's a true story (it circled him three times). Of course he kept fishing. And caught this monster you see right here.
Then he thought it might be wise to release her to fight another day. Whether it was because of the GWS sighting; I don't know, Karma points? Or conservation efforts.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2476.JPG
Is beside the point. It's a personal choice that he made. And it was only his choice to make. Definitely rad (yes I said rad) to watch this beast swim off. Something everyone should experience at least once. Or twice. Hell, three times -- just go crazy with yo' bad self! It really capped an already amazing day off with a cherry on top if you asked me. I'm a hopeless romantic, though.
This guy represents my status quote client. If there is such a thing: drops me an e-mail to set up a trip, never calls as strongly suggested (which really helps a guy who's on the water five to seven days a week), drops the occasional line to check in (every few months!), has a child somewhere in there -- amongst a few promotions in the midst of a lucrative career. Repeat for a year or so.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2454.JPG
And one day finally decides to call. I then say: "welcome back to the pipeline". Followed by a day on the water shortly there after. A big fish and nowhere to put the thing is next. Quickly followed by rushing out to buy a Hobie kayak in most cases.
Alright. Enough already with the killing. Harvesting of fresh seafood all by your lonesome. Whatever you'd prefer to call it.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2496.JPG
I'll go ahead and toss in another lame deck shot for your viewing pleasure. With a little psycho-bendo-shot action for good measure. I'm no doctor. But if this photo doesn't make you want to go fishing? You might want to get yourself checked out. I have no problem just coming out and saying it, either: ''there's something wrong with you".
I've said it before and I'll say it again: "a fish is a fish". And any, Yellowtail, is a good Yellowtail. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2482.JPG
While on the subject, though, I'm pretty sure this fish could easily eat some of those fire-cracker Yellowtail guys are keeping. Easily.
Above all, while fishing -- even kayak fishing is indeed a sport. For the most part it's just fun and games. A hoot. A diversion. From our everyday stresses of life (whether it's family related or career driven). It's got something in it for everyone. You could get pumped up by getting completely tooled, from a one-pound Bonito on a ultralight Trout rod. Which would indeed be a fight on two-pound line and a half ounce spoon. Or, getting smoked by a Homeguard Yellowtail; if that's what you're into. It's all good. Who's ever having the most fun is the big winner, right? Or so they tell me anyway...
I may not know much. But if there was a million dollar contest. A tournament if you will. For the guy who's the most stoked on the water.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2465.JPG
And it was held on this day in particular? Hypothetically anyway. You would have certainly lost if this guy had entered. Guaranteed.

I really admire you FOR dedicating time to post every week so that 'some' of us who have trouble getting out there to do what you're posting. Above all it's always a very good read.
Have you ever though about approaching a fishing periodical as a freelance writer, writing about the Kayak fishing? I understand it's gaining momentum as a main stream fishing activity (much like Fly fishing), and above all you do it so well. (Pics...Videos...narration!) :you_rock:
I'm right there with you Josh on the C & R! I remember many a trip where I'd stack my rod and help along the rail or "chum" if all the crew are busy. Or once I caught a few fish I'd hook a fish and hand it off to a kid or other passenger that hadn't caught something yet. That's how I kind of got my start building a rep on the boats (and why I get invited to come out to "boost the counts" when I was able and hopefully soon again).
Catch what you can use and release the rest, don't stock the freezer just yet! You have all summer and....it gives you a VALID excuse to go fishing! "Hey honey we only have a quarter fillet of Yellowtail left I "HAVE" to go fishing to stock up. :D This gives you married guys out there gives you a "REASONABLE" excuse to get out!
I only bring home a limit of large macks or bonito for Cat food treats.
I guess Tuna would be one of the only exceptions to this rule. However I don't bring home anything under 20#, both Tuna & "Firecracker" :yt: !!! :)
Thanks again for taking the time and energy to post for the rest of us to enjoy! :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

Thanks! My pleasure. Long time no talk, brother. Did you buy that skiff we spoke about yet or what? Inshore/offshore is in full swing; obviously. So let me know.
Speaking of. Why anyone with a skiff would even be fishing local kelp beds, or God forbid, dragging the bottom of the Pacific Ocean right about now? Is beyond me. I saw a forty foot sportfisher trolling the thick kelp edges the other day. And had to laugh. With Tuna ten miles offshore, Dorado on kelps slamming into the beach, not to mention some rather large Bluefin thrown into the mix. Offering quite the bonus kicker fish. And this perfect Islands/offshore rig is trolling the kelp catching Barracuda. No, it was not a charter putting little kids on fish (the only thing that might have made it make sense). Nor a local captain making jumbo Pacific Greenback Mackerel for Marlin/Swordfish bait. They were trolling mono rigs and looked to be targeting Barracuda.
I digress, though, in hindsight they looked to be having a good time. Booze cruise it up! So, what ever floats your boat -- or yacht in this case.

Once again Josh thanks for the great write up and pics.
I look forward to the read every week!
Alright, alright, maybe a weekly update was a bit ambitious. :D
Didn't really think about it while having a glass of wine that first night. Tossed some photos together with a short story here and there? No problem at first. Sounded simple enough. And in a perfect world I'm sure it would be. First possible concerns of not having enough weekly content, though. Quickly morphed into the inevitable: an endless revolving door of adventure after adventure. More photos than I knew what to do with. Quickly leaving me back-logged after I missed my first update. So many cool stories in fact that it was either not sleep, not surf or never swimming with the fish. And that's just not going to happen anytime soon.
Thus, Fish Porn Friday, being forced to take a hiatus. Seeing as time has become more abundant here lately. I might as well take this precious time to offload some inventory. Memory card full if you will. And lots of stories that are far from forgotten.
Certainly not all in one shot, though. Your eyes would bleed by the time you finished. Mine, too. And this thread was created to inspire people to go out and chase more fish -- not freak out from fear that there aren't any left! So, lets start with my last trip. The other day in fact. In the theme of keeping this a report.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0084.jpg
It starts on a secret Island, of course. Located twenty-two miles Southwest of Point Loma. First stop North Island. A current rich location that's eaten more anchors than salt water. The bottom in a hundred feet is littered with them, mind you. At times this is a great place to fish. And always, always, always a scary ass place to dive!
So, of course, I brought along a couple friends. What's that saying: "you don't have to be fast; just faster than your buddy". Perfect.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0604.jpg
Beyond the law of averages improving in the event of a, 20' Great White Shark, encounter. It's nice to have a buddy to fend off the Sea Lions.
Because the damn things are everywhere. And when I say, everywhere? I mean f'n everywhere!
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0545.jpg
Practically impossible to fish a live bait anywhere near this Island. And it's even worse when you actually hook a, Yellowtail.
Anyway, not a whole lot you can do about it. They take your fish from a sport boat? Who cares. If you don't dive, just try and imagine your thought process when they grab your prize -- and you're attached.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE00471.jpg
Your little baby (translation for expensive gun in this case) is attached, too. Throw that $1,000+ piece of wood into the abyss why don't 'ya!
No, my gun isn't sinking to the abyss there. We're just swimming together having a look around. On this day conditions were prime.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE01541.jpg
Actually more clear than these images let on. That black void after the rocks is, well, just that. Pretty much the edge of the Earth. So it's supposed to look like a black void of nothingness.
As you approach the ledge here you should get a better idea of the scene. Just know that it's a lot deeper than it looks.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0160.jpg
Your first dive to the top of that rock truly tells the tale, though. It's another twenty or so feet to the base of that rock. And another twenty or so feet deeper with every ledge for scale. Throw in schools of fish that are swimming anywhere from 60'-120' down. And if you're a competitive type? Equals a recipe for disaster...
Long story short, it was like diving in an aquarium on this day. Only making closing the gap all the more challenging. Punching 60' drop after 60' drop to hover and wait is exhausting. The fish wouldn't even spook as you reached their depth. They'd just sink further and further into the abyss upon your approach. The Devil's apple just praying on the tempted. I chose to dive within my limits on this occasion, though. Timing on your drop was paramount; more so than I'd ever seen.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0576.jpg
Hard work eventually paid off in the end. I didn't drown. And managed to sneak yet another fish through the Lion's den unscathed.
Well, looking at the clock it's nearly midnight. And seeing as it's a full moon? That means I have a client in six hours. For what's sure to be another incredible adventure if all goes according to plan.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0291.jpg
We'll be fishing another secret spot (photo from my last trip) that you may recognize. Although it's not always THIS pretty.
And since, Yellowtail, aren't the only fish in the Sea. I'll end this reviving update with a photo of my Thanksgiving Turkey.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0197.jpg
The fattest, ugliest, slime ridden mess of a bird that fed all who stopped on by. Way, way, way more fun wrestling your thrashing meal; than buying a big stinking block of ice.

With no further ado there, folks. I thought it wise to go ahead and slap a chapter on another successful season. While that chapter I speak of is still being written, of course. With adventure after adventure going down; and the far greater challenge of finding time to type! I suppose no time is better than the present to do so. A season that I hope brought great joy to each and everyone of you. A year that will be well engraved in all our minds. Whatever reason that may be? Well, that's your story to tell. For some, it's that first drag ripping run of their long awaited cherry-popping kayak,Yellowtail.

http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2559.JPG
Appropriately being added to Fish Porn Friday tonight. Well, I don't know what does.
Probably enough cherry popping for now -- I really don't want to bore 'ya with all the rest. So lets move on shall we. Besides, I'm sure we'd all agree that the only thing better than that first, Yellowtail, is what class? Exactly. The next Yellowtail.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2651.JPG
So, in that very theme, Chris I'll take this opportunity to apply the pressure publicly. You're next! Or your next-fish is next; whatever, you know what I mean. If it's the last thing I do, you Sr., are going to catch big Winter Yellowtail, too.
And while Yellowtail haunt the soul of many Southern California anglers. Whether they're actually landed or lost at the last second. Year round for that matter. For others it's that seventy pound, White Sea Bass, coming out of the mirk and into the cross hairs. When, for once, you're actually ready and holding the right gun! As those precious twinkling lights from above align.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0631.JPG
Just don't ask me about the two fish I passed on, immediately prior, to pulling the trigger on this fish. Apparently my visual scale was way off on this day! While a seventy pound ghost is no slouch -- in anyone's book. We'll leave it at this. It's safe to say the other two might haunt me for quite a while. And from an optimist point of view? Have me just that much more focused on future hunts from below.
Whatever the case regarding one season to the next. Here's hoping this one was a blur for you as well. What one angler considers, trash, another may treasure. Some guys could absolutely care less about say, Spotted Bay Bass. While others rank them with the, sacred-Cow. So the value of comparison between one angler's season to the other? Is, well, only perceived through the eye of the beholder -- and naturally so. For most the biggest challenge of all, mind you. Is even having the wherewithal to dare live in the present. And taking those chances in the first place. For without that one little step we'll always be on the outside, doing what's perfectly natural as well. Looking in.
Sometimes it's as simple as packing and setting the alarm. That one day you might have took off of work just for an hour on the Bay. Or, maybe driving the extra mile offshore (when something in your gut just screamed at you to do so). We've all been there a time or two. And it's these tiny choice that make all the difference in the world.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF14131.JPG
Perhaps heading full steam. While for some reason you just can't catch up to the surrounding wild life. To what's seemingly, the only kelp paddy, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Dare I call it a race, as it often seems, we're in a race to go nowhere. And lets not forget (as most of you here) just kayak fishing to get your weekend warrior kicks! It really makes no difference in the grand scheme of things. To anyone else anyway...
You could be conquering the fear of taking that first dip into the deep-end. Where it doesn't take a genius to quickly realize you're not at the top of the food-chain anymore. No matter what size gun you're holding! This Novella after all is for, you. Other like minded individuals who might appreciate a good little fish story from time to time. A glimpse into what some of us would soon forget. If it wasn't for that little contraption. One, that all of us carry in our pocket these days. Perhaps weighing down that stocking we just opened up for Christmas. You guessed it: the camera.
Speaking of, Christmas, I for one know there's still a kid inside each and everyone of us. It's all about tapping into that precious energy from time to time. Like, Bert, here as an example. Now this guy gets it! Crowd or no crowd; not the least bit bothered by unforeseen challenges.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/20141025_171219_resized.jpg
And most definitely living in the present --- like a kid in a candy store (when this photo was taken).
Some days are better than others when it comes to fishing with clients. Where the trials and tribulations of putting those puzzle pieces together (i.e. work) are replaced by fun. The pressure's off; so to speak. Then and only then. Do I get to occasionally dabble in the day's festivities.
I still think something like, Flo Rida's: "it's going down for real". Would have took this up a notch. In fact I know it would have. Bert, however, like many of you has a career, though. And a family! So spending all day, eiditing a fish killing adventure, complete with a bunch of released Yellowtail -- slapped to some gangsta' rap? Just isn't something he's got time for right now.
Which I perfectly understand. So apparently, instrumental rap it is: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bFyo5oi6E7M
Upon landing on this day. Bert was just beaming with stoke. Maybe even more so than usual -- if that's even possible. I turned around to snap a picture of him while I was loading the truck. Just as the sun was setting in the background. And a synapse of time before I screamed aloud: "what in the hell are you doing dancing around in the surf"?!?!
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/20141025_180008-2.jpg
Only then did I realize it was some other kid. Who just so happened to be stoked out of his mind, too. If it wasn't for the two hundred pounds of stacked muscle seperating the two -- practically Siamese twins.
I'll also have you know that it doesn't take over a hundred pounds of, drag-ripping-fish, on deck? To get this guy stoked about a day on the water. Case in point. Not that I want anyone trying to pry my well guarded tutelage, and blood oath secrecy from his cold dead hands. Which covers the vast span of, well, if I'm being completely honest? About damn near anything from rigging to reading the sonar. Including even, yes, any one of the 50,000 rock-piles up and down the twists and turns of, La Jolla, proper.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0662.jpg
I dare you to go rock fishing with this guy. And I, double-dog-dare-you, to put up a hefty wager for the jack pot fish! Consider yourself warned.
Something we can all celebrate together in our own little way, though. Is just the experience of being on the water itself, right? That goes for the migrating, Grey Whales of today, and the jumping Dorado of a few months back. There's just something special about the Big-Blue if you asked me. For whatever reason some are just more drawn to it than others. Allowing us as divers to seemingly float, weightless, hardly bothered by the gravity of our daily lives. Like my friend, Dylan, here with one of his first Dorado of the season (notably shot a few miles off La Jolla).
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0185.JPG
Just one of many magical, warm blue water days, in local waters. Take a look at the reflection on the surface here. I can't exactly take much pride in the photo; nor the beauty of the image. I mean, after all, I just pushed a button for crying out loud. It's crazy to think without this image, though, I never would have noticed the mirror like surface. Or the kaleidoscope of colors in my face right above. Just another subtle reminder to take photos in the first place my friends.
Here's the same stoked guy just two seconds later. Holding the same fish.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE01911.JPG
Just without that ridiculous mirror finish from above. So burn, burn away, as this is the digital age!
What made this particular trip pretty cool? Beyond the fact that it was definitely in kayak range of my daily office, mind you. Was for one getting to swim with and hunt the, eighty swarming Dorado (with Blacks Beach in the background no less). One of my fish pictured here.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0172.JPG
And probably the school of fifty pound class, Yellowfin Tuna, that would occasionally come up from the depths. Right about this time the true gravity of our season came into perspective. Forget the daily hammering of Yellowtail with clients, for four-months-straight. The better grade, Tuna, in local waters really raised my brow. And basically made this little weekly update an ambitious proposition to say the least. Something about striking while the iron is hot! Quickly placing this thread on the distant burner. I'll throw up some, local Tuna, photos at another time. And speaking of? If you happen to have some photos of your own. Be it local Tuna -- or Wahoo -- I'd love to see 'em!
Anyway, I suppose that's enough to chew on for now. :D
May your next fishing season put this one to shame. In closing, whether Christmas came early for you. Right on time. Or, God willing, better late than never?

Fish Porn Friday. What a silly title. Albeit somewhat fitting if the author actually ever put up the photos on a,well, Friday. So, with that being said, here goes nothing. The mantra for this week's update will be, I don't know, less talk and more action? Namely in part to the fact that I've got some ligament damage in my right wrist. Yes, my reeling hand. My typing hand -- my everything hand for that matter. And this shit just hurts I tell 'ya. Everything from simply dipping a tortilla into a bowl of fresh Guacamole. To attempting to fasten my seat belt? Sends a screeching sharp pain and hurts like no other.
So, assuming your strong hand is healthy as an Ox? And you'll have no problem getting off to a bit of porn. Metaphorically speaking anyway. Go ahead and log onto your favorite site -- get out those paper towels (assuming she's still at work, of course) -- and most importantly?
DON'T FORGET TO CLEAR YOUR HISTORY WHEN YOU'RE DONE! :help:
Because if less talk and more action is what you're after. At this very moment anyway? Then you've certainly come to the right place.
First lets roll the clock back a bit for fun. Why not. While I realize this is a kayak fishing site? Well, lets just say this puppy was caught in kayak range!
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/photo-58-2.jpg
I'm talking easily. Imagine rolling up to a dipping Turn without a boat in sight. And expecting to see just another, Yellowtail. When you see 30lb-60lb Tuna rolling instead.
To add to the fun. It was pouring rain on this trip and borderline miserable weather wise. And these fish wouldn't touch our damn bait!
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/photo-57-3.JPG
A very long cast with a ten foot jig-stick, though. And a tiny metal jig with a very long leader of twenty pound fluorocarbon? Was the ticket. Super spooky fish that would hammer and drop our baits again and again. We'd watch them on the sonar over and over. Bite the baits and leave teeth marks. Only to instantly spit them out. So it was pure, run and gun style hunting, on puddlers and boiling fish -- kill the engine and come to a slide -- and you better be able to make a long smooth cast. A friend and I laughed our ass off on this day. And filled the boat in the process. Consider the proximity to shore? Pretty much as good as it gets and easily F-P-F worthy.
Anyway, enough of that, old news. And the only reason I even mention it is because I shoulda', coulda', woulda' gone out the next day on the Hobie. This happened quite a few times actually this year. Fish well inside of ten miles going nuts. For easy pickings on a boat and totally doable for a dialed in kayak angler. Whatever...
When you get tired of eating Tuna? I don't know about you, but I certainly do right quick for some reason. There's always the kayaks in the garage just begging to hit the water. It's certainly not all, work work work, for me these days. It's more fun than ever when I find a day to myself And when pulling on big, Yellowtail from kayaks, is no longer fun? Rest assured I'll quit.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2567.JPG
Besides, who am I to let dust gather on such amazing pieces of machinery? Truth be told my favorite fish to eat is, you guessed it, Yellowtail. Just so many ways to change it up! I never freeze the stuff. It's sushi party, big B-B-Q, and smoke the rest. In no particular order.
Beyond the table fare? Unfortunately for them (the fish) it just never gets old. Being pinned to the rail as line smokes off the reel is one of life's great joys.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2736.JPG
Certainly, if it's your first time being pinned to the rail (pictured). And, trust me, I'm doing everything possible to catch so many before I die. With the goal being that it becomes boring one day.
For some reason it just never seems to get old, though. Maybe you've caught a lot of big fish from boats already. Good for you. As many men have.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2642.JPG
It's just different pulling as hard as you can while getting towed around, God's green Earth! Believe me this guy is pulling for all he's got right here.
And, after he swore, that even though he's left handed he had no problem using right handed reels? Which did raise my brow upon launching this day.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2669.JPG
Immediately after this trip for some reason. Perhaps, it was the bloody knuckles and getting relentlessly worked by these fish -- went out and bought left handed reels.
Anyway, we've all gotten worked by a big fish. That's what it's all about, right? I got my ass completely kicked a few times here recently. And rest assured I lose fish from time to time, too. Part of the fun. It happens to all of us. Not to mention being far superior than the alternative -- perhaps you've been a victim of this scenario -- never getting a shot in the first place?
Contrary to popular belief I don't frown upon guys who show up with the, Big 5 special, rods and reels. It's typically the opposite type of clients who struggle. Case in point. When a guy shows up with all $300 rods and Accurate reels? All Shimano Talica reels (unless he's a Shimano rep of course). Between you and I it's a slight to minor cringe. Brow raising nuance of what's to come. Often a foreshadowing of someone who's not the easiest to teach something, well, new.
Every great now and then, though, I get lucky. In the form of an angler who already sacrificed the virgin if you will. Alright, maybe a Goat. Something just clicks. I don't know, helped an old lady across the damn street? Because everything just seems to go their way while we're on the water.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2569-3.JPG
Even though it apparently just wasn't going this gentlemen's way any trips prior. Just a slight adjustment in technique and rigging. Call it a step in the right direction. Call it placebo. Call it what you want as it's no business of mine! But, this guy handed out the ass kickings on this trip. Ripping current and windy as all hell. Seriously, 99% of my paddle-clients, would be in tears by the time this photo was taken (no exaggeration). And, no, that's not a Hobie commercial. Just bummed the photo was overexposed here.
I should say the fishing went this guy's way. Because, no doubt, the conditions on this day were more work than play. This guy didn't whine or cry one bit.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2601-2.JPG
Those shiny, Accurate reels, did some serious work I tell 'ya. Trophy fish fell victim as sweat dripped from the brow. Love the reflection of the sunset in his glasses here. The lighting was crazy with hot pink hues and true golden California light. You almost can't tell that we're just trying to stay in the boat!
And, I quickly quit crying about the first overexposed, shoulda' coulda' money-shot. When I opened this image below. Behold: The Money Shot.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2568-2.JPG
Instant relief. Stoked! If this photo doesn't make you want to run out and buy a $300 rod, an Accurate reel, and a freakin' Jackson kayak? You're either sponsored by, Hobie and Daiwa -- or dead!
Ah, yes, the coveted epic bendo-shot. It's way the hell harder to capture than most will ever realize. Just trust me on that.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2769.JPG
The more you attempt to capture them the more you'll agree. Forget the guys with a yard-sale on deck in the photo. Forget the thousands of shots I take where somehow, some way -- on a thirty pound Yellowtail no less -- the damn rods not even bent!
More so, just attempting to capture what's really going on. A guy, whether it's your first kayak Yellowtail fight (pictured)?
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2770.JPG
Just pulling as hard as he freaking can. You know, huffing and puffing, God forbid hand cramps -- the whole nine. .
Where the good kind of pain, a fully bent rod with smoking drag and perfect lighting combine. It's just dare I say the ever abused word, EPIC!
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2768.JPG
When out of nowhere my client, just busts out his best "Blue Steele". You know from, Zoolander? Alright, fine, Marlboro Man. Is that better? I mean come on -- the damn Waxwing thingamajiggy looks sick here. Even I want one after looking at this image.
And speaking of Marlboro Man? Something about this photo just screams out to me. Yeah yeah, that golden California light. Not that, though.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSCF2778.JPG
More along the lines of: "whoa that was great -- I don't smoke or anything -- but, you wouldn't happen to have a cigarette would 'ya?"
Seeing as I've been accused of overdressing on the water from time to time. It's safe to say I'm no Marlboro man. Nor do I smoke. I don't even have a legitimate, "Blue Steele", in my tackle box of random grimaces when forced to grip and grin.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0900-2.jpg
As much as I'd love to be a, um, poser. It's just not in the cards. Maybe in the next life. Right up there with more money and my own little Island -- that'll be the day!
Until then, I'll just continue to roll with the punches. Whatever Mother Ocean decides to toss this way. It would get boring right quick otherwise. Especially if it wasn't for the perpetual state of flux. Season after season; day to day for that matter.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1922.jpg
As long as you're eyes are open. Theres just no limit to the crazy things you might find. All the mysterious creatures of the Sea. Their habits and cyclical patterns (the dreaded Red Crab pictured here).
The ever-present quest of continuing to try new things. And never stop learning, of course. It could be anything. Maybe set up a new rig. Say, an 80 lb mono, Sabiki type thing. With a series of, four 10/0 giant hooks, and a one pound weight for good measure?
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1975.jpg
Hell, don't be scared to do something silly from time to time. Maybe slide one of these ugly things on each hook.
And do the downright unthinkable. Toss it over the side as that one pound weight steams to the bottom like a locomotive. Now, to clarify, I'm not suggesting you do this or anything. Or, that it would even be legal. It's just an example.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0925.jpg
If you do, though, just don't forget to hold on -- tight!

You're right. The only reason I deleted what I posted? Was because the video didn't upload. What's far more interesting, however, is how you'd even see that post. It was up for two maybe three seconds? If that! As soon as I hit send and realized the video didn't upload, I instantly hit delete. That's impressive.

I don't know. A little birdy told me this, Josh guy, is just too busy preparing for his seminars. You know this coming, Friday and Saturday, at the Del Mar Fred Hall show? He's probably all stressed scouring and studying all those years of fish logs, moon phase/water temp, hypothetical scenario strategies. All of which in an attempt to bring home the, Bacon, trip after trip!
You're right about one thing, though. That gimpy wrist did slow me down a bit. And thank, God, for that: from typing!

Whoa. Getting the same sentence quoted three times (in a couple hours out of the house) -- must have said something amazing without realizing. Profound even! Still not seeing it, though, so I'm moving on.
Chris,
Absolutely. As soon as kayak fishing in La Jolla makes it to the Olympics? You can be my official PR consultant. The new, Chris 2.0 version of late, is perfectly suited to that skill set. You've got to realize, however, that 5% of nothing is still nothing from a monetary standpoint. We can roll in all that dough like Pigs in sh!% together.
And, salty-dogs, all sitting in on seminars at Fred Hall? Had no idea. Good to know. Really thought they'd be out selling, White Seabass by the pound right about now, but duly noted. Either way, new guys just stacking up on torpedo sinkers and value pack Sabiki rigs. Or salty dogs. It's going to be fun either way!
Momo,
Nice seeing you as well, brother, and I've got to ask. Is that you on the right in the photo? If so that's hilarious!
On a more serious tip. Folks, don't blow that wad just yet. I'm trying to upload a pretty good dose of porn. And doing so on this site? Is a freakin' chore! Having to go through every image (email it to myself no less), compress it to damn near half the size, put it in the silly bb-code (where half the best photos won't even upload to begin with) -- all to have the images quality cut in half once more and utterly destroyed . For your viewing pleasure.

This time of year that's about all it takes to get the job done. Once you add the early wake up call, beating sun on the water all day, and quick surf session for good measure? Age sets in and you quickly realize that you're no longer twenty years old (or thirty for that matter). The photos, as predicted, ended up taking hours (plural) to upload and compress. Half of them not loading at all. Then it was time once more to hit the sack in preparation for another long day. Back at it again! Which the day before my Fred Hall seminar was. So, we might as well start this update right then and there.
While sharing the dark, deep secrets, in a public seminar setting isn't my specialty. I'm much more comfortable in the field doing this. Aa a one-on-one, coach.

Not only trying to put someone in the right place at the right time. But, begging and pleading for the angler to please -- pretty please with sugar on top -- hold the rod the appropriate way! This guy had biceps the size of my thigh. In time I convinced him to use them instead of his forearms.
The groove was eventually found, though, and we actually started gaining some line back. To my delight.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1473.jpg
And not a second too soon I might add. As we were quickly smoked into some structure and our odds of success were diminishing.
Got some bendo-shots, too. Was pleased with the way this one turned out. A happy accident if you will.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1470.jpg
Has a pretty cool, I don't know, Samurai Warrior look to it. Regardless, I like the image, and therefore deemed it F-P-F worthy.
This was a pretty typical day in that, rest assured, it wasn't easy. While the blazing sun, light winds, and lack of crowd may look appealing from afar. Conditions weren't exactly ideal. Suffice to say It's not going off. Fish are not attacking the paint off the bottom of the boat and the clock is ticking. My client is on the verge of giving up! The tick and tock of the timepiece becomes louder and louder -- as I decide to change gears entirely. As I think aloud: Perhaps the pattern of previous days is no longer working. Maybe the fish just aren't feeding. And it's at these times when I give an infuriating stare at the sonar -- calling it a bold faced liar! Alas, though, it just is what it is. A daily grind to put the puzzle pieces together. It's at times grueling, mentally straining, and if you're doing it right? Indeed physical.
The age 'ol mantra that I've preached for years: "Never give up!" Was rewarded with another incredible fish over forty pounds. And the balloon of pressure on my shoulders was eventually lifted. As it's not until this very moment that I get to breathe a sigh of relief and relax.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1511-2.jpg
A true giant. Which is great; obviously. Funny enough, though, when you're from Colorado. With this as your first Yellowtail? Perspective tends to fly out the window. Is this one big enough to keep?!?! Is there room on the kayak? What do you mean I've got to bury it in sixty pounds of ice for twenty four hours?
Well, as I gently placed the trophy in his truck upon returning, I felt obligated to shed some realistic light. If anything, for the poor local guys who would kill for this trophy.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1519.jpg
In saying: "Take a good long look at this fish". "Because you're probably never going to see, much less, catch a bigger one".
While these photos may be a chore to upload. And, giving the day's synopsis, from many days prior. I'd love nothing more than to share with each and everyone one of you? However, unfortunately, time just doesn't place that opportunity in the cards. Lack there of rather. And time in itself is the highly prized commodity here. Thus, Fish Porn Friday, being dedicated to you -- the family man -- career focused -- weekend warriors who surmise the fishing fleet of the modern age. And rightfully so; as living in Southern California isn't cheap. This right here Bud's for you!
Speaking of career focused, family man, and man's man in general. The, never had a bad day on the water, man himself.

The one and only. A living legend in the making: Bert Vega. You all get to see this, undeniably epic photo, before he does.
This guy has always got a smile on his face. Seriously. I'm talking a Sabiki hook to the barb in his finger? With a smile!
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1253.jpg
As long as you don't so much as look. Or, dare even think about touching his beloved prized possession. That's right, the Hobie cup holder with his favorite beverage (Coca Cola classic). You do what you want. It's America after all, but consider yourself warned. Thought I'd try to get at least one image of it in action. White caps, rough seas, and salt water filled Coca Cola? It's all you, bro.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1319.jpg
I even think there might have been some blood in that cup holder on this trip. Highly probably anyway.
A little dedication photo to the yo-yo iron. A few ounces of offset heavy matter and a large treble hook. So simple; yet so deadly.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0012.jpg
With a reminder in the background that there is a, God. And sometimes you're blessed with the Pacific Ocean to yourself.
I don't know about you, but me personally, I'll have one tied on every month of the year (deep iron). The same way I'll have a 10' jig-stick with a surface-iron tied on, any day I hit the water, regardless of season. You're either ready for an opportunity or not.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE01271.jpg
And, for me, the pain of not being prepared just isn't worth the alternative. I don't even know what that is? An empty rod holder; beats me.
What I also know is that I'm really going to miss this guy. Had some good times in rough seas on more than one occasion.

Hell of a wing-man who absolutely loves to pull on fish. He was never scared of large surf (at the launch) or a little wind and chop.

Which is a good quality in a fishing partner if you asked me. Certainly bodes well for those not-so-easy days.
Some dude holding another nice fish that fell for the yo-yo iron. I heard he got his ass kicked by this fish, too. Sissy.

Truth be told, I tried for hours on end, to make the bait I wanted on this day. Seriously. Just wasn't meant to be, though.
Here's another beautiful day filled with trials and tribulations. More so perseverance through adversity. Notice no Mirage Drive in the photo?
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0423.jpg
Good thing I was fishing by myself on this day. And knew where the fish were at. Because paddling a Hobie Pro Angler sucks!
Another Cool-Cat who's always frothing to go pull on some fish. Damn near always has a smile on his face, too.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1398.jpg
Who knows. Must be some strange correlation between catching fish and smiling. I could be on to something here; must do more tests.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1419.jpg
Seriously, though, even when Matt's huffing and puffing just roping on fish. He's still kind of smiling through the pain of it all.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1655.jpg
Then, you guessed it, right back to being happier than a Pig in Sh!%!!! Plenty of high fives and smiles on this particular day.
As much as I wish I was? Just not the, Cheshire Cat, super smiley guy. More of a grimace aficionado. Maybe in the next life...
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1155.jpg
Speaking of. I don't know what this guy had for breakfast? But, two scoops of that please -- and wrap me up some to-go please!
And this guy, too. I don't see him often these days, but when I do. Besides the fact that he makes four times what I do an hour?

From a floating vessel in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Kind of hard to put a price on some things as it's all relative.
Enter a guy that can probably cast a surface-iron three times further than you. Without ever backlashing; as in ever! If you've seen my photography style prior. You'll probably notice that I like to be able to see the "whites of the eyes". And maybe capture a fleeting moment of pure emotion if I'm lucky.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0165.jpg
Here, though, I'm just trying to back up a bit to get some perspective. On not one, but TWO, super bad-ass "drop-the-ego West Coast spinners". Having no problem putting the pride aside (a huge problem for men by nature) this gentlemen and I have been working on these for years. Anyway, more on that later...
Lets get back to the action. Up close and personal. Pull as freakin' hard as you can, GET IT DOWN NOW, action. Captured moment in time.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0170.jpg
This being the first outing in his brand new kayak. Not too shabby if you asked me. Looks like it floats! And kayak mojo: check.
Plenty of stability and looks like a solid pulling platform. And enough room to easily stow a trophy fish for the family.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE01851.jpg
Now, I don't know who would do such a thing? But, after calculating the square feet of the deck? After all this is a large floating craft; arguably the best kayak ever made.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0319.jpg
I'm betting you could even put two beautiful fish on this kayak. Who knows...
Whether you've caught a thousand of these beautiful fish. Or this is number, two, as you quickly make your way to a thousand.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0686.jpg
Quite frankly, in the grand scheme of things, that's irrelevant. As long as you catch one on our trip? Or, are catching them; period. IS what really matters. Do me a favor, though, if it's the former (and we're fishing together that day). Please don't wear polarized red lenses. While they may work and have a place.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0802.jpg
After we handle business on the water and show the fish who's boss. When we go for the money-shot? You might look like a Devil. Or, hell, to the PETA type mindset folks. Perhaps I look like the Devil. Either way, brown, grey, blue or even mirror finish. Anything; not red.
Speaking of, PETA, types. Lets be honest here. They're around (Anti-fishing supporters) and aren't going anywhere for that matter. If you fall into this category yourself? Are disgusted by this thread and hate to see animals, ANY animal or insect, fish etc, injured. Or, dare I say harvested. Just know that I don't only kill giant female breeders. Hardly. I often harvest full grown male specimens, too.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0512.jpg
And, if the mood strikes, I'm not too proud to make a clean kill on a small 'kine, Yellowtail. A fish is a fish and I'm not always trophy hunting. Damn Sea Lion photo bombers...
Whether I'm below the water or above. The way I look at it? A life is a life. Lets think about this for a second. Seriously. Big breeding female, an adolescent male, any legal sized species. A juvenile for that matter (even bait). It's a damn life. I respect all the fish I harvest and rest assured, I'm well aware, what animals I choose to harvest paid the ultimate price. And one day soon (another relative statement here). I'll join them. Guaranteed. Just like each and every single one of you.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0444-2-2.jpg
I might be hovering over a rock-pile just enjoying the view. And get so caught up in my surroundings that I forget it's time to breathe.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE0634.jpg
Or, oh so slowly, kicking to the surface as the pressure mounts on my blood vessels. With the same result (shallow water blackout)!
How I eventually meet my maker remains to be determined. If I have it my way, though. It just won't be in some silly traffic accident or old age for that matter.
Until that inevitable day, though, rest assured it will be business as usual. I consider the Pacific Ocean my playground and few days go to waste. My entire life revolves around current conditions. Swell forecasts, wind, impending weather changes -- you name it. I'm paying very close attention; you have to. It's always changing, right? Otherwise, I might as well just clock in and get comfy in that cubicle.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1221.jpg
Way too much fun to be had on the water, though. Big fish are just in my blood. I absolutely love them and welcome the next one with open arms.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1233.jpg
Their fate, contrary to most of these photos, is not nearly as cut and dry as you might think. I certainly don't tag and bag every trophy fish I catch. Not even close! I can also say that, God as my witness, I've never so much have sold a filet. As that's essentially the polar opposite of what I actually do. It's all about the experience for me -- THE HUNT -- and sharing that philosophy with others. The never ending journey itself is the true reward; not the trophy. So don't go confusing the icing with the cake.
While you see a tiny fraction of what we actually catch. You see an even smaller percentage of what we release. Now, think about this for a moment.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1520.jpg
In a feeble attempt to put all this killing/harvesting into perspective. When we're really on the fish? It takes a great deal of restraint to even pull that camera out.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1586.jpg
Assuming I caught a nice fish on say, Monday, what in the hell would I do with all the fish from the next four trips that week? Exactly. So right back down they go!
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1602.jpg
If somehow, someway, this isn't blatantly obvious. I still release 90% of what I catch; if not more. Easily. Rarely is there even an opportunity to take a photo.
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE1605.jpg
It's find fish, catch fish, and make sure my partner for the day gets his shot. The last thing I want is a trophy cooking on deck all day!
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/FILE16061.jpg
That would make zero sense. I'm a big believer in, Karma, and attribute it to my success on a daily basis. And, selfishly, watching them kick off is truly bad ass. Their face almost lights up with joy. Then turns angry as they violently kick off with all their might! Almost as if they should get away while the gettin' is good? And before you change your mind. It's a special experience that I've enjoyed for many years and have encouraged others to try for themselves. It's no secret around these parts. And anyone who spends, any measurable amount of time, with me? Will either be inspired to do the same. Or, absolutely hate my guts for tossing them back. Sometimes both.
Even more so since I took up, free-dive, spearfishing. You can't exactly spear and release, right? What I decide to shoot is done; it's over! There's no decision to be made. It's final as soon as you pull that trigger. I suppose to even things out, from this point forward anyway, I'll start including more release sequences. While this may not be blatantly obvious. I thought it wise to at least acknowledge what should be. I eat what I harvest. I've never wasted a single fish. If you've ever seen me at the launch? More than likely you've seen me even returning the carcasses back the the Pacific Ocean. I'd never throw so much as fish skin in the trash. With so many creatures who'd love to join in on their "rightful share". You know, the bones and scraps that aren't exactly up to our elitist standard? The Lobster, Crabs and Sharks, however, probably wish more guys shared the same logic.
Anyway, enough of that Jazz! This week's update will come to a close with what keeps, all of us, awake at night. A dream most of my inner circle shares anyway. For days that start off well? Then proceed to blow your mind, revive the stoke in the process, and inspire us to reach even higher. Perhaps set new goals. Or, just re-evaluate our approach on any given day and help put things into perspective.
Speaking of perspective? Good luck if you were hoping to take the, Yellowtail division, of West Coast Whoppers this year. My money's on this guy!

Welcome to Fish Porn Friday. Where sometimes you catch a trophy, White Sea Bass -- then a true fish of a lifetime steals the show anyway.

Thanks for sharing, Josh. As always you post some really beautiful pictures. Like you said I think most people don't realize that you guides fish 4 to 6 days a week to stay up on were to find the fish and that there is no way you could eat that many. I bet you can catch more in one day than most of us in a month. I am sure on most days you release 100% of what you caught. i just appreciate the beauty in the pictures you post. Thanks Josh, see you out there in that paradise.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to post your exploits Josh. :notworthy:
As one who understands beyond just what you post, I assumed you do not keep/kill everything you catch (otherwise LJ would be a barren wasteland! LMAO!) just like you can't catch every hookup or release on video or picture. I have no idea who would ever come to a conclusion that you harvest every fish you hook every day of every trip!
Being temporarily (hopefully) disabled and waiting for the day I finally receive treatment or surgery to temporarily receive relief from my pain, your stories/videos and pictures keep me hopeful and entertained. I'm looking forward to the day I can finally make it out there and hopefully transfer my experience from my days on the boats to kayaking and having some of the fun and meeting you and many other members from here! :luxhello:
Until that time keep them posts/pictures/videos coming. :cheers1:

I guarantee he is still kayaking. It's in his blood. Just doing it solo mission. No way in the world will he give up fishing for Ghosts In The Grey. Let alone, pulling on a big mossback.

I went fishing at Pacific City, Oregon. Launched at 7am and limited by 9:30. 3 weeks ago I caught a wolf eel there too.
