Any thoughts on fishing J Street in SD Bay?

A buddy of mine is coming down from Corona and wants to launch at J-Street in San Diego South Bay.

Any thoughts?

What"s to think about. Easy launch, good fishing. I would launch from the park instead of the boat launch. One of the beauties of kayak fishing, launch where you want to, not where everybody else has to.

We've done tidelands, spanish landing, shelter island, even Newport Harbor a few times. So, we're gonna give J Street a shot and see what we can scratch up in the South Bay.

Any chance of getting a bonefish on an artificial (non fly)?

J street is my favorite place to fish in the entire bay.

Launch from the beach area which is next to the rv park.

If you want bonefish I would use saltwater clouser flies or get some ghost shrimp.

I catch more fish at J street than Coronado 90% of the time.

Big halibut at times there too.

Hardly any pressure or boat traffic.

The launch is really close to the parking lot.

A beautiful area especially early morning.

Without a doubt the most peaceful part of the entire bay and if you want numbers probably the best too.

My favorite area of san diego bay to fish by far.

Last time I was down there I watched two guys catching bonefish on ghost shrimp midway down the dike on the main bay (in a skiff). I tried and tried with the fly rod, but only bass and croaker were interested in my offering.
A conservation guy driving his truck on the dike stopped and talked to me - the fly rod attracted his attention - he told me that the guides regularly bring clients out and fish just off the big cement piles on the dike and catch bonefish with regularity there. He was out trapping crows and ravens, who would otherwise raid the plover nests.

I like it there alot, and odds are you will be fishing all by yourself...

I was born and raised in chula vista and have been fishing south SD Bay for years. Its a fun fishery. Mostly spotted bass, but many other species as well. Over the years I've caught only 2 bone fish on plastics. But with ghost shrimp, or even raw shrimp from a market, you can expect to catch a few on most trips. Mike
