La Jolla probably is one to the easiest surf launches. Look for a day with a one foot swell and it would be close to impossible to flip, unless you are a tourist.

There are lots of launches around but many depend on the surf size. Check surf reports and check the locations in person first, them try em out on flat days. Many beaches even have surf cams to give you a live check. As for a yard sale, bring only the gear you need, secure it all, and it won't happen. Lastly, get to know your kayak and how it handles in the surf. A bit of practice with out gear to worry about helps too. As you improve your surf launch/landing skills more spots will be available to you. Mike

For fun, you could always try Windansea... I've seen a couple of guys go out there... (but it was a small/flat day) :)

It varies greatly with the tide level and whether it is rising or falling in any given area. The steeper the falloff of the beach at a spot the larger the surf and also any offshore mound will bump up the surf at one particular spot.

Where people get into trouble is driving a distance and reaching their destination and finding that the surf is high with a short wave period and feel compelled to go out regardless.

There are places where I go where the surf can be zero and it looks like a lake on some days and on other days there can be 8 ft breakers rolling in to the beach. Even on these beaches there is always a southern or northern end that is much calmer with smaller waves than at the center of the beach and better spots for entry and return.
