Looks more like a shortfin croaker. See them all the time in the surf at Imperial Beach

Fyi, i wouldn't eat those things, last i heard, they were on the do not consume list, if i remember correctly.

You can eat them depending on where you caught it. I never eat any of the Croakers/Corbs/Spot fin ... having said that, If you are older that 30 and only eat once in a month or two you should be fine. I personally have caught quite a few Corbina and have ONLY ever eaten one ... and it was good. Here is a good guideline http://pvsfish.org/index.php/southern-california-fish-consumption-advisory
