View Full Version : Donation of Fish to HOW

One constant cost for HOW events is always food. At every event after a day of fishing we offer the Vets we are taking out a nice lunch. In general we have tried to do Fish tacos which is always very well received. We have been lucky to have the support or Tommy and COP however it isnt always something that is possible for them. This is where HOW can use your help.

If anybody finds themselves with extra fish (YT,WSB,Halibut, Rockfish, etc) that they would like to donate to HOW we would be most appreciative.

Just wanted to put this out there for the guys that are on the water a lot and may have the opportunity to help. I will work with you in any way possible to get the fish from you and make it easy on you.

If you would like to donate fish please PM Yakmedic, Makobob, or Tacmike and they can take care of planning to receive the fish from you.

You rock tony thanks!

We host an event once a month so we do require 15-20lbs a fish a month at a minimum o dont be afraid to step up guys! If we end up with more Pelagic than we need I will likely smoke it and hand out to guys as snacks or something.

We are set for fish this weekend thanks to a BWE member who donated 2 fat Yellows earlier in the week.

With that said we can always use fish to freeze for when fishing is slower!

I caught 2 10# halis this weekend for a total of 11.5 pounds of pure halibut filet for next weekends HOW tournament. If more is needed I think I can dip into my own personal stockpile.... let me know what you need, happy to help out.

HOW is once again in need. I just weighed the fish we have left from the last event and donations and we are down to 7#.

We have the largest planned veteran outing of the year this weekend 11/8 and will have approximately 60 mouths to feed. If we do not get any further fish donated we are going to be buying 20-25# of fish.

Please help out if you can! Fish can be dropped off to OEX Mission Bay, OEX Sunset Beach, Bob is in Escondido, Mike is in Santee, and I will drive down personally to Sunset.

Come'on guys...step up and donate some fish to a good cause. I promise you'll catch more.

HOW goes through 20-30lbs of fish per event and we host 9 events per year. Thanks to gracious donations from people on this board such as Tony "Ful-Rac" and others like Tommy Gomes at Catalina Offshore Products we have been lucky enough not to have to buy fish.

However the freezer for HOW is running very low. We have enough fish for our event 2/28 but after that we are completely empty. Without continued support and donations from the community we will be serving HOTDOGS!!!

Please Help in anyway you can. Even 5# makes a difference.

Yep, I can bring it then for you if you want. It is frozen though so I would bring ice. Otherwise I can drop it off after the event or another time. Just let me know.

Couple of questions.....

Where would I be able to donate if I am in the SFV area?

Next time I fish LJ, and catch more than I need, is it possible to drop it off (whole) with someone on the way back up to my area?

With all the yellowtail being caught and posted about please think of HOW if you have extras please let the HOW coordinators or me know ( I have a large chest freezer and I am currently storing fish for HOW events) We currently don't have enough in my freezer for the next event, we have about 1/2 of the amount needed for the next event in August. Nothing for the event in October. So please let SoCal HOW leadership know if you have some extras, and we can coordinate your donation.

Thanks,
Bernie

As I had hoped when I went fishing to La Jolla on Tuesday the 19th. I got lucky and landed a couple of nice Yellowtail. One about 33lbs and the other about 29lbs, both were fun to catch and were bled and gutted on the water. Came in to the launch and since that was too much weight on the front of the Cuda 14 to lift by the T handle and pull through the sand. I bunged them to the back of the kayak to set the extra weight behind the kayak cart. Of course that only led to the tourist asking " Is that a Tuna?" Fu** **, "Did you catch that out here?" Fu** **, "Can I take a picture of it?" Fu** yes!. Even before going out I already had decided I was going to donate the fish to HOW and I had wanted to get more than one to donate. I got my wish and so will HOW. The fillets are already vacuum sealed in two large bags and frozen. It came to 16.4lbs of fish for the HOW events. If I get some more next week they will also go to HOW.

Hi all,

Please let me know if you have any recent catches that are vacuum sealed and frozen. The SoCal HOW chapter depends on your generous donations to feed our veterans and volunteers! So if you have a little extra please think about donating it to HOW!!

Thanks for thinking of us, but no need to keep any of the bass species (Calico, spotted, sand) They are best left to be caught again. We get great donations of yellowtail, white seabass and halibut. Those species are typically big enough to have extras. So if you get extras of one of those please let us know if you would like to donate to HOW. We really appreciate the willingness of BWE members to supply our fish for the veterans and volunteers!

Are you guys still accepting fish? My freezer is full of YT and since I'm fairly new to kayaking still I'd still like to keep the 25+ pounders for my kayaking diary! I fish 4-5 days a week so if I keep one to give away I'd chose not to fillet it. It would only be bled, gutted, and iced. Is that ok?

Hey there,

we currently aren't accepting donations that aren't filleted and vacuumed sealed. Because all of us are volunteers, we usually don't have time to filet and deal with breaking down a big fish. I really appreciate the offer and if you would like to donate sealed and filleted fish please dont hesitate to let me know. This is not meant to be a pain, but we want the freshest fish for our vets and we previously have had issues with improperly stored fish and non-fileted fish which make the event day very difficult.

Thanks for thinking of us, and we always love new volunteers to our events! Come see us this Saturday at Tidelands Park at 7 am

Cheers,

Bernie
