Why Wait Till Lobster Season...? A half a limit of Red Crabs and a limit of tasty Bonito!
Ugly water this morning...mixed up confused wind waves left over from yesterdays afternoon and evening winds and a big swell made it uncomfortable this morning. The PA took a bunch of small waves over the bow heading out...lots of Macks on the troll out and plenty of Bonito once I dropped the nets...http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/IMG_4549.JPG

Soaked the bait cages overnight in Pautzke Crab and Shrimp Fuel and it only took a one hour soak for three nets to come home with 17 Crabs! Off the water by 10am.
I used the new Scotty Puller again and it is a "back saver" when the water is 95'+ deep. I'm using a small PWC 12V battery and it's working great. It fits perfectly under the Hobie ProAngler seat accessed through the tackle hatch.
Get your lobster gear in shape for the upcoming season and get some good eats!

Thanks Tony…
What a Delicious dinner tonight...those Crabs are So Good when freshly steamed.
No big ones this time...but lots of nice medium size beauties.

How do you open your rock crabs?

Those buggers always have some seriously thick shells and when I got at them with a hammer, I get shell chips everywhere.

Looks like a great haul and nice dinner of fresh seafood plater. The trick to any thick claw cracking is a the back side of a knife. The thicker the claw the heavier the knife. A few strikes 1/4 inch from claw opening and you'll get a nice piece of claw meat. My folks used to work for the crab meat processing industry.

It's quite logical, the strike zone of an object focus point will minimize the amount of shell shatter. The claw just need a Crack not bashing. Wiggle after the Crack is made and viola! Beautiful claw meat presentation.

I've been cracking the Spider Crab claws & legs with a hammer on a piece of 2 X 4.
The secret to keeping the shells from going all over the place is to break them in a freezer gallon ziplock bag ;)
